General Collecting and Investing Forum

Overall forum on thoughts, stories and ideas for collecting and investing your Legos.

  1. I have my big haul from Toys R Us sales this weekend currently chilling in my trunk, literally. I'm in NY and we have a little bit of snow and freezing temps in the area. All of these Lego sets are going to their final destination tomorrow at my office/warehouse. Is it safe leaving Lego in a freezing car overnight? Or should I bring them in to the house for the time being?

So, this is partially inspired by DNIIM from another thread, basically targeting out biggest screwups and regrets in buying, not buying and selling. Buying Oh those early years. I was collecting the Toy Story Lego sets for my son, when it came down to needing the Garbage Truck set to complete it. I had already forked out significant dollars for the collection, though had been purchased the sets at some discount (only later for them to be heavily discounted). Well I saw the Garbage Truck set on a site called Fishpond for $99 (free shipping) and the set had proven to be elusive due to it's exclusive release. In the end I ordered it, then the wait began.... and conti…

Anyone have experience cleaning ink off of Lego? One of my minifigs I got in a bulk lot has ballpoint pen ink on it [emoji46]

Was browsing on Ebay when I noticed this new logo against some lego sellers, could Ebay also start gating Lego sellers? Seems unlikely to me, but guess everyone should always have a backup plan if Amazon and now potentially Ebay start restricting sellers.

About time! Leg Godt is reporting that LEGO will be soon selling some watches suitable for adults, and quite frankly, older kids. They will be available this November. They are quite pricey though... Not sure I'd get one because of that steep price tag. LOL. Quote from the Leg Godt article: Lego has had a line of watches for a few years now, but the designs were decidedly targeted at kids. And since the building toy probably has as many adult fans as children who love it, Lego will be releasing a new line of watches this November with designs geared more towards its grown-up fans. That being said, no one is going to mistake any of the styles in the new line a…

Just curious on a Monday morning what other members on BP do after a selling splurge. Do you just buy more sets for investing? Buy yourself or someone new toys/gifts? Pay down debt somewhere? More alcohol, entertainment, drugs lol, Or just pad the bank account for a rainy day or the next good buying opportunity? Combination? Sales have been great for me from Nov-current...been on a hot selling streak with this hobby, guess those sets bought within 2 yrs ago have matured enough for decent profit/demand. Wife is happy the closet is kinda bare now compared to before and I used profits for new TV, tablet, phone, guys Vegas trip...so I have a second wind to start …

Anyone have any good recommendations for display stand sellers in the US? Is it generally just go to Ebay/Etsy? I'm more interested in acrylic stands/cases. I see a lot of cool UK stores but haven't had much luck finding US websites to reduce shipping and time. Thanks!

Greeting gents, It seems to me that we have here on this site more then enough members who spend MORE then enough money investing or collecting Lego that we could easily approach a distributor and get our fix wholesale instead of scrambling every time a GC is 5% off or TRU is having a sale on what is otherwise inflated prices. Does anyone have any ino on who we might approach with such an offer. If even 50 members that spend 3k a year were to get together your talking 150k worth of buying power. If folks on MASSdrop can do it, I don't see any reason why we couldn't. Any thoughts?

  9. What is the one Lego set that you wanted the most but could never find or her?

  10. So I've heard all the arguments from both sides. The side that says LEGO has stood the test of time as an investment, it is a different commodity, an active collectible that has always been able to reinvent itself due to concept of the toy. Then there's the other side that says look at some of the past collectibles that have eventually flopped, the overall history of collectible return on investments and for the matter history itself, all good things must come to an end, right? While LEGO is a good/great investment now, sites like this and many others are clearly showing that many people worldwide are doing the same thing, buying LEGO and stashing it for a fut…

Maybe it's my age, as the months come tumbling down before I turn 40, but a lot of my favourite mid size sets in the last few years have harked back to when I was a kid, Ecto-1, Mystery Machine, Benny's Spaceship. Look how happy Voltron made @Alpinemaps. Got me thinking to what sets I'd love to see made and I seem to keep coming back to tv sets from decades ago. Maybe this is what Ideas is all about, but I'd love to see a dedicated retro tv theme, here's a few of the sets I'd like to see: A-Team Airwolf Knight Rider Battlestar Gallactica - I know, Disney would never allow it Buck Rogers Magnum PI - Car and helicopter The Fall Guy pickup …

  12. I'm about to make a substantial purchase from a local ad that to me seems like a fantastic deal. However, if anyone can take a few minutes to let me know of the things I absolutely need to check for before walking away and handing over my money, please let me know. I don't think the mini-figures in this case are a huge hurdle as there is no way I'll ever know if the right one's are included or not, except for the Dragon. Here are the set numbers 3178, 3179, 3180, 3222, 3366, 3367, 3815, 3818, 3833,4200,4201,4202,4203,4204, 4206,4206,4208,4431,4432,4433,4434,4435,4436,4439,4441,4641,4642,7207,7239,7286,7636,7638, 7639, 7641, 7744, 7747, 7848, 7942, 8402, 9440, 31010…

  13. I haven't been seriously collecting for a long time, but I find it interesting some of the stories about people buying 30 of the same set, etc. I have gotten immune to some things, but I still haven't been able to bring myself to buy a friends set. And I hate when I walk up to the checkout counter with 4 Lego sets and the cashier just happens to be really attractive So are most of you just immune to it? When do you still find yourself embarrassed. Or are you to the point where it doesn't matter?

Only a few weeks into 2014...anybody think this year will be even better in terms of Lego excitment, news, investments, releases etc. I just started this Lego hobby/investment in 2013 and enjoyed following such topics and discussions about Mr. Gold, Exclusive Crawler, Robin Redbird Cycle, exclusive minifigs at ComicCon, (probably missing some other noteworthy sets/news) etc. etc...I wonder what topics will be headlines in 2014? No crystal ball I'm sure we'll see more 'investors' on our forums and some simply lose interest. As long as the reseller market doesn't 'crash' I think we'll all be happy.

I did not realize how hard it is for a young child (ages 3 and 5) to have a Lego investor as a father. I jumped in feet first 5 months ago without thinking that through. I will say it was just about enough of a drawback that I almost stopped. Originally I had thought to keep it from them but that is not my nature and kids notice metric tons (so it seems) of boxes being delivered weekly. However it got me thinking about how to use this as a teaching opportunity (we homeschool - all things are teachable ). So after talking with my wife and then the kids they each have decided to be polybag investors. We decided to limit it to 2 polybags a year at no more than 5.00 purc…

I have tickets to a limited screening of Back to the Future plus Q&A with Christopher Lloyd and writer / producer Bob Gale this week and was thinking about getting one of my sealed sets of (21103) Delorean Time Machine signed. Would this increase or decrease the set value? I look forward to your thoughts!

  17. I have always wanted to give them the benefit of the doubt, but with todays pickup - it seems that Walmart intentionaly sells damaged warehouse items at the big discounts. Today I picked up 3 Diagon Alley sets. They were all damaged with various types of damage, at different areas of the boxes (dents, deep creases, a 5 inch puncture/rip in one of the boxes). The box that they were shipped in to the store was fine, so that isn't the problem. These were all damaged beyond anything that you would ever put on a shelf. With this unrelated damage, it seems that they had clearly been put to the side in the warehouse (as damaged). It appears that they may be setting up these grea…

Hi Brick-pickers! I'm planning to get 3-4 Lego-displays in my living room, but I need some inpiration for what to display. I got the 76023 Tumbler and this is one of the lego-sets which i want to display. I might go for the 10188 Death Star (Since the Death Star II is amazingly expensive, and the New Death Star is ... yeah, you know) Have you any ideas to what I can display? I need inspiration for 1-3 Lego sets.. The thing is, it should not be colorful and it has to be kinda big I have though of gettting the 10228 Haunted House and/or the Slave I, And I might display an Imperial Army/Scenario with 40+ Storm Troopers, Darth Vader, an Imperial Shuttle etc. If …

  20. Black Friday miracles abound. Sold my first Exo-suit on Amazon Canada and will even make $10 off the thing after fees and shipping. I have 7 left. Bought them and a few more at a discount and had been slowly getting rid of them as birthday present and charity donations over the years but now one has sold and I raised the price $10. After getting a wide variety of positive and (even more) negative responses on my "Biggest Losers - Class of 2014" thread (http://community.brickpicker.com/topic/10487-biggest-losers-class-of-2014/), this time I'd like to discuss the investment winners of sets released in 2014. Here is my personal list of 2014 sets with the most growth potential imo (after retiring some day, of course): 1.) 76023: The Tumbler 2.) 10243: Parisian Restaurant 3.) 10242: Mini Cooper MK VII 4.) 42030: Volvo L350F Wheel Loader 5.) 21108: Ghostbusters Ecto-1 I'd like to get to know your Top 5, too!

  22. Has anyone else secured a copy of The Secret Life of Lego Bricks book? Also anyone got the unique Lego Pogo Stick piece that was the up-charge promotion that you could upgrade to? These pogo sticks and minifig are selling for crazy prices on ebay. Only a few have sold. Most people are posting theirs as red pogo sticks with minifig with printed shirt with space man on shirt. Mine is blue pogo with generic red shirt minifig (no printing on minifig at all). Anyone else have any insight on these? 23. I'm doing some research for a little project I'm working on. I know how eBay protects a buyer in transactions, but how, in real terms, do they protect the seller? Also, what protections does Bricklink have for either buyers or sellers? ...and as a seller, do these protections even matter? Do the fees and commissions take precedence over any other options?

In a sleepy little town called Billund in Denmark, there is a treasure. And if you have the right connections, you can get a peek at it. The Lego House is a museum that can be visited by special arrangement. Its a very well done timeline of the company with lighted walls showing photos, history, and niches of actual products over the years. But if you have the right guide, you can step through a secret wall panel in the tour, go down a shallow set of steps, and badge through a door labeled "engineering". There you will find "the vault" and a copy of every Lego set made since the 1970's. This is actually Lego's "archival" vault, which means that authorized em…
