General Collecting and Investing Forum

Overall forum on thoughts, stories and ideas for collecting and investing your Legos.

  1. Started by Bricklectic,

Hi, I'm new to the forums but I took a quick look around and didn't see the question so hopefully someone has experience with this. I live in NY and have bought about 40k in Lego since 2016. I never paid too much attention to the Sales Tax I was paying on my purchases aside for of course calculating my profit. But it really does eat significantly into profits - with Amazon taking 20% on the way out and NY taking 8% on the way in, with box/tape/return costs, it's really hard to make money until a set appreciates at least 50%. My question is, is there a way to recover the roughly 3k I spent over the years to NY (40k * 8% sales tax) ? What I could find goog…

Hi all, New member. First time poster. My 9yo daughter is quite fond of LEGO. I recently realised that she really enjoys playing with the LEGO afterwards. This got me to try and introduce her to free building which she's been thoroughly enjoying so far, making an Animal Crossing based island. With that in mind, I'd like her to have more LEGO to work with. She currently has a metric tonne of FRIENDS based LEGO so that's what she's working with. I guess I'm looking for a few tips/pointers please: What's the best way to start someone in freebuild and how can I support her? Are there specifics sets/boxes/block packages that I can buy her …

Looking around for things to list and come across two Haunted Houses, two Nintendos, two Pirates of Barracuda Bay, one Assembly Square, four Hedwigs, and two Roller Coasters. I bought these when things were super tight on the market but just don't have the follow through to get them back on the market. I'm much better at the long, slow hold. I really hope things are tight before the holidays so I can unload these and buy more Treehouses instead! Anyone else struggle with this?

Right now I have a few garage shelves for storing LEGO. The problem is they are only 16 inches deep so a lot of the bigger sets either hang off a lot, or don't fit between the shelves at all if they are too tall. I've been trying to find some deeper shelves but most of them are quite expensive as they are made from metal and meant to hold thousands of pounds of tools and garage equipment on them. Before I just build my own, has anyone managed to find some cheaper shelves that work well for the majority of sets out there?

Was at Walmart in Texas this morning looking for HP Minifigs (no luck) and saw some new Harry Potter sets with large white stickers on them. One was set name/piece count/ages... Another one had country of origin disclaimer... Obvious these were from EU and then repacked for US Market due to plant closure in Mexico. Wonder if the instruction booklet inside is EU or US?

Anyone else happen to man the Lego NES? Anyone else also looking to collect the Mario set as a whole? Thoughts and opinions? Speculations? Genuinely curious & new to the scene. Hoping to make an investment on the Lego Nintendo as a whole as my new hobby.

So unfortunately have to move and been searching for tips on how to pack/move numerous large assembled sets (UCS/Creator Experts/etc). Not sure bubble wrapping all these sets and purchasing plastic bins like I'm seeing in google searches is most cost effective, but wanting to know from the experts here. I'm also hesitant for the moving company to be careful with these so figure I'd have to pack my car, but wife looking at me all crazy since she doesn't believe these are a priority =). It's a 6hr drive and even debated making a couple of trips in the 5 day span. Any advice? Much appreciated!

Hello fellow Bpers We had a pretty significant basement flood last night and luckily very few of my Sets were damaged, only about $400 worth of sets had any water on them (biggest casualty was a complete soaked Tower of Orthanc). Let me tell ya... muscle rack shelves elevate and work well! All that to say the water is continuing to poor in but we have it relatively “maintained” but the basement is still wet. The Question I have is how long can a lego box hangout in a wet basement (without direct contact to water) before it starts to absorb moisture and damage the box? Thanks in advance Note: Yes I have insurance and have started a claim for damaged legos and ot…

I used to rely on Google shopping to give me the best idea of who was selling a set and for how much or to find the best price on a set. NOw GS has been overrun with poor data and bogus Chinese sets. Anyone have a price comparison site that gives the best data?

My girlfriend and I picked up the Paris Architecture set from the Lego store in Danbury this afternoon. Upon opening it, (seals intact) the numbered bags were already opened. We looked at it even further, and realized some of the pieces were already assembled - it looks like someone built it and took it apart to return. Anyone else have this issue? How did you rectify? Surprised it came from an official LEGO store.

SInce 2016 I have been investing in Lego and have built up quite an inventory. Due to many sets becoming really valuable right now, I started selling off about half of my inventory. Most of my Lego is stored in a large storage company with a fence that has a code, a door that has a code and my boxes have good locks. This local storage company has a good reputation, so I expected my stuff to be safe. I'm pretty cautious, so I had my Lego in several units far apart in the building, so thiefs would not accidentally stumble upon my whole collection. They did however find one box... This Wednesday, I went to the company and took some boxes on a cart to the elevator t…

The micro Death Star II set is cool but really could have included an exclusive minifig like w/ the micro Harry Potter and Avengers Tower sets. Where are the sales though? At least previous May 4th sales were bad but they were something. The last decent May 4th sale was in 2013 with the $99.99 10227 UCS B-Wing.

  15. I was wondering if any MOC vets know this. Was just curious if any of the websites can show sets that use a lot of pieces per a certain color, like sand green, etc? I know BL shows you which sets per year use certain colors, but was wondering if any dove into percentages of color so you could sort for the sets with the most.

  16. Hello! My strategy is specifically to buy for part out. Time is not a concern for me and neither is the price as a set. Yes I know what this entails and am in the process of organizing and storing now Sharing some deals I did over the past weekend. Collectively the inventory I picked up is worth 1,202 part out value. Cash price 498$. 6 New sets and 2 used sets. The first 4 were purchased on Facebook marketplace. All sets new in box except the Clone Turbo Tank. Initially I offered 230 and we agreed on 290. Payed 300 because I did not have change and he was a service industry worker out of a job. Set #8639 was also purchased from FB Marketplace.…

  17. Hey everyone, Sort of new to MOC world and my question is really for the collectors who target large MOCs and need to gather a lot of pieces. Simply put, what is the most budget friendly way to go about this? I am targeting a few large Star Wars ships, so a lot of grays and blacks. Do you all primarily use Bricklink? Target sets on heavy discount with the pieces you need? Find used lots on eBay / craigslist? Honestly I put together a wanted list on Bricklink and its pretty expensive, haha almost seems cheaper to buy an existing UCS Star Wars set and just use the pieces from that. Anyways, just curious how other people go about it. 😁

Haven't been here in quite a while. I think I will sell of most of my collection (not that it's huge). They are all perfect in their boxes, well stored etc. I can't check my Brickfolio right now. What is the market like these days? For example I have: The Tumbler VW Camper MF Haunted House Super Star Destroyer Death Star Red 5 X-Wing Slave 1 Tie Fighter Winter Village Toy Shop Parisian Restaurant Detectives Office Ecto-1 Orthanc Simpsons House Thanks, hope everyone is keeping safe

  19. Hello! What do you guys think a misprint of the box of a Nismo is worth? (I guess it only appeared on the first lot released in china for the asian market). Lego took a photo of a model where a Sticker on the door is upsidedown and printed it on the box and manuals. They also used this photos (and still use) on their advertisment on lego.com. There often are misprints but I guess if its really rare and also kind of funny (they cant handle those many stickers by themselves anymore) it could be of certain interest...so whats your opinion on this?

  20. As recently by LEGO stated they will introduce environmental friendly boxes and dispense disposable plastic packaging... So whats that gonna be? Is every LEGO Set from now to 2025 a collectible and by 2025 we talk about the good old times when Lego wasn´t packed by something that can fertilize your plants...? I really don´t know what to think about that? Shipping is going to be much more expensive for sure... https://www.stonewars.de/news/lego-group-jahresergebnis-2019/

I'm trying to ascertain whether a larger set produced in 1999 would have plastic wrap over the entire box. I'm contemplating buying a set locally, but want to make sure this wasn't done at a later date.

  22. Hey All....First things first, Mods please move this to wherever it should live if I've dropped this in the wrong thread.... So yep, the unthinkable has happened. About 2 weeks ago I discovered that most of my LEGO collection has been stolen. About 30-40 large plastic storage tubs (the ones from Walmart) with roughly 400+ BNIB LEGO sets...stolen, no less, from the padlocked attic of my rental property. Damn, it really sucks writing that. And I'll confess straight up... I should have been a lot more vigilant. We moved from our old house in early 2017 and the last I saw of my collection was when I attached the padlock to the attic and told our rental company that…

I think this site should have a section within the brickfolio that shows you all of your mini figures. I have a ton of figures that are separate from my sets that I would like to put into the brickfolio and check the value.

  25. Started by $20 on joe vs dan,

So this was my 2nd trip to Legoland (Ca), but I didn;t get a chance to go in the last time. We also did Brick O Treat, BTW, which was lame. Initially it felt like Nirvana from an AFol perspective in terms of seeing all the sets on shelves with many of new premier sets on display. But once i started seeing the prices it was more of a meh from a reseller's perspective...I didn't want to get in trouble so I purposely did not bring my wallet...once the boy heard that he spent most of his time reading LEGO books. I mainly focused on trying to see what TOOS sets I could find and really the only one that caught my eye was UCS Hulkbuster. Saw plenty of BHz LAdy Libert…
