General Collecting and Investing Forum

Overall forum on thoughts, stories and ideas for collecting and investing your Legos.

  1. So I am in the middle of inventorying and my Brand New Tower Bridge Box is squishy from water damage (purchased from Toys R Us) Do you guys think its okay to sell as new 2 years down the road? (I'm not sure how much water damage does to Legos) If not, is it possible to file a claim of some sort for wet box damage? The shipper was FedEx. Do they normally put plastic bags over your boxes for you cause they never do that for me? Thanks!

Saw a huge tub of misc lego parts with minifigures at my neighbors garage sale. Have much do you they are worth?

  3. Hello all! I'm thinking of investing $2000 or so with the power of leverage. My question is, what would be the biggest bang for my buck? Things like this to consider: Which "big" set is about to retire and would be worth more down the road? Should I invest $2000 into one type of set? Or spread the cash around? Ghost Train or Vampyre Castle? How many years should I hang onto X set? Thanks guys.

I have no idea how people parting sets/pieces do it...10 seconds after reading my notification that I set is sold, my excitement turns to a dull realization, damn...I have to find a box and pack now haha. Guess for people that sell minifigs and parts, it's about volume and you have a routine down. And you have to enjoy what you do or else you could get tired of it real soon. What are some unusual boxes you have used for shipping common sets? Or do have a store/site you purchase your new boxes? Sometimes if I don't have a box available I go to UPS and the lady there would custom cut boxes and wrap it securely for me since most boxes are not the ideal size. I pa…

  5. If I plan on rebuying the sets that I grew up with and loved so much! Few I remember off the top of my head: 6270-1: Forbidden Island 6378-1: Shell Service Station 6395-1: Victory Lap Raceway And much more, but need to do some research what I had... What about you all? Don't you wish you had a time machine to tell young self not to be so foolish?

I started Lego investing around late 2010 and since then i've invested a fair chunk of my wages each month into Lego. I have completely maxed out my loft now (which is a decent size) and have a decent amount of sets hiding in cupboards, under beds etc. However now i'm somewhat at a cross roads as i'm sitting on a pretty big gold mine i'd like to think, but very much playing the waiting game of retirements/sets increasing in price and getting the sales. I keep saying to myself that's it for now until i sell x amount of sets. Yet I still find myself buying Lego when it's on discount or if a new set comes out and I really like the look of it, i'll usually buy it. Gene…

  7. I am posting this as I been getting alot of E-mail from people saying they really screwed up by buying hundreds of the small cheap sets, instead of getting the Big and exclusive sets. Now I guess Everybody on here would get as many old Exclusives as they could afford at the regular Retail price right now if that had a chance. Like the Remote AT-AT, Imperial Flagship, Carousel, Cafe Corner, Green Grocer, Dubai, Statue Of Liberty, Eiffel Tower, Imperial Shuttle,Diagon Alley, 10195 SW Dropship, SW 8129 AT AT and there are more, but the point of this is so most screwed up and missed the Train on Most of these. So I am telling you that you don't have to screw up this time. Eve…

Since this will be my first "After Christmas Clearance" to experience, what can I expect? Are we thinking that Target will mark down sets on the 26th? (which is their normal Thursday markdown day). Does Walmart Act that fast, or will they individually (store to store) mark down over the next week? I have to drive almost 1 1/2 hours to get to a few Targets, trying to plan this out. Do they ever have great deals online after Christmas, or is this mostly in store? What is has been your experience? Thanks!

Hi, I am from Hong Kong. Just sold my MISB perfect box 10185 for US$750 in Hong Kong Yahoo which I bought it for US$150 at 2008, and I am so happy with it. I still got 3 x 10185 to go How is your highest score?

  10. Here is the most recent LEGO Press Release on the 2012 year end financials and statistics. The original link can be found here. Overall, the data was excellent news for The LEGO Group(TLG), LEGO fans of all ages and LEGO investors in particular. TLG has shown strong growth for an eighth straight year and has shown tremendous growth globally, expanding an already large fan base. What I found most interesting from an investor and collector's standpoint was that the TOP 4 themes in sales were(in order): 1. CITY 2. STAR WARS 3. NINJAGO 4. FRIENDS I know all about the strength of NINJAGO and FRIENDS themes, and the CITY theme is always a winner with the kids, but STAR…

As most on this site are grown men, myself included, do you ever feel creepy, dirty, almost guilty when you go into a store and buy multiples of the same Lego sets? I haven't been able to convince myself to buy any of the Friends sets in store, as it just doesn't feel right.

  13. I have always enjoyed Lego, though I have just started collecting various sets (mostly Star Wars) within the last year. I have kept myself mostly to the original trilogy sets and I have stuck with the vehicles (just because there are so many). I also have just joined this site within the last few weeks as I am getting into investing. Mostly going to be small scale for right now. I have seen posts in the forums about people talking about Lego wanting to do away with the secondary market and the "Golden Age" of Lego investing and selling being over. This is bad news for investors but as long as Lego retires sets, and people want those retired sets, there will alwa…

  14. Hey everyone, So I am in the process of sorting massive amounts of legos and a lot of the rubber tires I am coming across feel very oily and slimy. I've felt this before in other rubber portions of toys and I know it is common (though I don't fully understand the chemical reaction that occurs). Anyways, wondering if any one has come across this and if these tires are salvageable? Is there anything I can wash / soak them in to rid this? Or are they pretty much done for? Thanks for any help!

Sorry guys, but I have to brag a little bit about today's accidental 1 store find. Last night my wife, kid, and I drove to Arkansas for a 1 night/1 day trip to Crate of Diamonds State Park. We've been before, but our kid hasn't and we wanted to let him run around and look for diamonds. We didn't plan to pick stores between here and there, but we did stop on the way and pick a couple of WalMart's. We had some decent finds on the way, but no specific LEGO home runs. Today we went to the park. We didn't find any diamonds, but we had a good time. On the way back we decided to stop at a random WalMart in the middle of nowhere Arkansas. It had three full rows of cleara…

How can you cut down on the amount of money you spend on the hobby and, instead, using that money for LEGO investment?

  18. Hi, I have a stupid question. How do you manage and organize your receipts? Stores from Target, TRU, LEGO Shop at Home, Walmart, Kmart. Store receipt and online receipt are different size. Do you organize by date, by store? and where do you store them at? What I am doing is use the minifig box (60 count box) for store TRU, LEGO store receipt. online receipt in some blinder.

  19. What's yours? Mine is a toss up between the Sandcrawler or the AT-AT. I'm sure as more sets are announced that will change. I know alot of you aren't fans of remakes but LEGO seems to have outdone themselves this year once again.

  20. Today I have snapped and with anger feel the need to vent with everyone on here. I buy and sell bulk boxes of lego to fuel my addiction, well I buy in bulk break and sell on bricklink. I am amazed that lego have not won a copyright case over megablocks but at least it is easy to tell the cheap quality and colour of megablocks a mile away. My anger comes with Cobi and Star, these are without doubt a clear rip off of lego even down to the 4 letter word on the studs. Now Cobi can usually be identified by the colours except for the black which is my real beef, and now finding plates which again can catch you ouch with star on them. Now i am fully aware that great grandma who…

I was wondering if poly bags made a good investment? I have limited storage space and I do not want to devout a large sum to LEGO investing. My goal in investing with LEGO is just to have fun and maybe someday down the line have the hobby pay for itself.

I couldn't find any topics about this. Are there any sets that are good for quick flips?

  24. We all know Cafe Corner / UCS Millenium Falcon and many other sets from four or so years ago have done great after being retired. But are there any winners we can pick up now (i.e. not retired) that have a very high likelihood of delivering 400% return in 4 years? In other words, if you could only buy one set in huge quantities this year to get the biggest return in 4 years, which would it be? I have some thoughts, but don't want to bias the thread before it starts, so take it away, folks!

So perhaps someone more in the know can explain this to me. I have been buying Lego set 40090 Halloween Bat & Pumpkin from TRU the past 3 TRUTH. Shelf price of $3.99 MSRP $9.99 and was thinking perhaps it was excess stock found by Lego that they are clearing out thru TRU. My TRU has been getting them in cases of 6 so I asked manager to use the hand scanner and it shows over 999 in the mid-Atlantic distribution center. So this morning I see that walmart is now selling them online for $9.99 same set number same piece count here: http://www.walmart.com/ip/LEGO-Halloween-Bat-Building-Set-40090/46716417 Thing is this is a Retired seasonal set according to Lego and orig…
