General Collecting and Investing Forum

Overall forum on thoughts, stories and ideas for collecting and investing your Legos.

Anyone else happen to man the Lego NES? Anyone else also looking to collect the Mario set as a whole? Thoughts and opinions? Speculations? Genuinely curious & new to the scene. Hoping to make an investment on the Lego Nintendo as a whole as my new hobby.

Just curious, but do the finishing prices provided by the Ebay on the price guide include shipping costs? On sets that are selling a reasonable quantity every now and then you can see 1 or 2 auctions lower than the rest. If the prices shown do NOT include shipping costs I was wondering if the lower priced items had higher shipping costs causing people to bid less. Or were the buyers just lucky.

Good Evening. I have an opportunity to buy a lot of partially build sets. The goal is to rehab them to completion and sell on ebay. Problem is the guy selling does not have manuals for them and I am not sure what those sets are. Could you let me know the ball park number I should offer for this? He is estimating it to be 80 pounds.
  <a href="http://s802.photobucket.com/user/matrosov1/media/Internet%20…

  5. So I didn't know this - and maybe it shouldn't have been this way - but my store told me the christmas PAB boxes were given out for every 75$ you spend, not 1 per purchase. I got 4! So now my delimna is - I don't know crap about single bricks. I am totally a set guy. Mine are going to probably be for resale, but for those of you who are experts, what should those of us looking to just offset the costs of what we bought to get them buy? - What colors? Easy to sell? etc. I was thinking about getting the bigger bricks in a weirded color. The way the box is set up, I bet you could fill one pretty well. I am sure EightBrick has a way to get 300 in…

I was looking for advice on storage of Lego sets. I currently have them wrapped in bubble wrap and placed in 27 gallon totes. I have to many to keep in the house and wanted to get your thoughts about storing them in my garage. I live in Central California so the weather is upper 90's in the summer and the 30's in the winter. Thanks for any input.

Great article that was just posted in our newsfeed. I am a little tired of this boy thing/girl thing. LEGO is amazing for everyone. I am just glad to see how well this company is doing in a down economy and coming out with new themes for everyone.

I'm sure some of you do this already but when shipping whole sets with box, I wrap up the box in used plastic retail bags to maintain some sense of water proofing before putting in a box with packing peanuts or bubble wrap for shipping. Everything from the nice yellow bags from the LEGO store to the crappy, thin bags from the grocery store I save for this purpose. I bring this up because today an eBay buyer let me know that the box I shipped him was left on his front porch by the mailman in what must have been a heavy rain. The box virtually fell apart but the LEGO set inside was still protected by the plastic bag it was wrapped in. He was grateful and so was I!

  11. The Taj Mahal is just one of many examples. When people drop that kind of money for a LEGO set on the secondary market, what is their motivation? Are they building it? Are they hoping it is an investment that will continue to climb in value? Are they just completing a collection and will pay whatever they have to in order to get something? I realize all these scenarios are going to be accurate in several cases, but I am just curious to get some perspective on this. This is something I have always wondered. What do people have in mind when they spend all that money???

  12. For the mid price investor... what are the "can't miss" sets to start buying? 29.99 up to 49.99 sets or so.

  13. What lego sets do you guys recommend buying for a future investment. I only want lego sets that are going to be retiring within today and 5 months from now. These sets can be rather expensive like the modular buildings or over 200 dollars. Thanks

So the prevalence of Pre-Orders have kinda shy-rocketed, it seems...I'm throwing this poll out there to see how folks think about them. Sharing a bit on my end...I think I participated in almost every pre-order this past year on LEGOs and some collectibles and let me say...not a single one panned out w/ the scarcity I was expecting...some are still TBD. I think the hook for me (other than FOMO) is thinking I would have more money available later than now...and its always been opposite 😬

Hello! sorry but I have a doubt...Filling the brickfolio, you have to choose between MINT and NEW, but I really don't understand the difference.... If I'm buying a set in a shop or on amazon, ebay, etc. that's never been used and it's sealed how can I classify it?

Hey everyone, I wanted to run an idea past you guys to see if you would find it useful. I have developed a service that runs every fifteen minutes on my computer and checks whether every non-retired LEGO set is available. If not available, it changes my database to reflect that and sends a text message and an email to me to alert me of the retirement. It has been working well and accurately for the last 4 months (when I first developed it). I was curious as to whether anyone else on this forum uses a similar technique and whether you guys think this is a good idea for a program. Also, the obvious bottom line question is whether anyone thinks this kind of idea is wo…

Here is a well written article on those that make a living Building LEGO or doing more than the typical users. There is also a small section on LEGO investing and Brickpicker. http://priceonomics.com/life-as-a-lego-professional/

  19. So I know how to get a set into Bricklink, in the wanted list, see the wanted list by store count. Is there anyway to do a automatic mass buy? Do I need to go to each store individually and pick all the parts they have? I am trying to see the cost estimate to fully bricklink a set. I mostly only buy single parts from BL.

It seems as of late, that almost every listing with Modulars or some other valuable Lego set, that starts well below MSRP is a scam. Anybody else feel that way?

Hi all, I live in Windsor, ON, about 15 minutes from Detroit. My wife wants to do some shopping tomorrow and this will be my first time post-Christmas to hit up LEGO deals in the USA. Are people still seeing clearance items at Wal-Mart, Target and/or TRU? I'm also considering Wally World (if I can find one in MI), Kmart, Barnes and Noble, etc. Any more I should add to this list? Anyone in the Detroit or greater Detroit area cleaned out any stores I should avoid? I'm hoping to be pretty ruthless and only buy heavily discounted items, and I'm hoping to make 12-15 stops. Looking for older sets - with some of the posts on here I'm wishing for the Black Pearl or …

  22. Has anyone ever tried buying up sets right after Lego has stopped making them? I think the advantages to this kind of an investment is you don't have to keep guessing when the set is going to stop being made. I know with the Emerald Night when it sold out after Black Friday you could get one for $150.

  24. I mean on the buying end - when I sell to folks in California, I collect sales tax from them and remit it as required by the SBOE (:::looks nervously at the ceiling, expecting to see California agents descending like ninjas...) But when I buy at a retail shop (i.e, Walmart, Target, the Lego Store, etc.) will they honor my resale certificate? Or am I better off not "outing" myself as a reseller? I know I can get the sales tax I pay out deducted from what I have to fork over on my returns, so it's not a huge deal, I'm just curious what other folks do. (Edited for spelling. Spell check told me, and I didn't listen.)

What would be the best way to put the lego sets? I am sure all of us have small sets and big sets, how would you put the sets? Would you stack them vertically or flat on the bigger surface horizontally? If vertically next to each other, would it be ok to put a few sets on top? If you lay flat, how many sets would you stack before it gets too heavy? I am trying to find out from some of your experienced collectors on how you would store your precious sets while protecting the box to the best condition. Thanks for the advice in advance.
