General Collecting and Investing Forum

Overall forum on thoughts, stories and ideas for collecting and investing your Legos.

  1. Published in the Wall Street Journal a couple days ago: Lego A/S shook off the malaise affecting the wider toy market and fended off an onslaught of fresh competition in the building-block segment to continue its winning streak in 2012, booking a 25% revenue increase that vaulted it into a near tie for the No. 2 slot in the global toy business. The Danish toy maker enjoyed sustained success for its popular Lego City and Lego Star Wars sets. Its new Lego Friends theme, targeting girls, sold twice as well as initial expectations and helped triple sales to girls. Lego's growth has been attributed in part to more sets aimed at girls. Above, Lego Friends characters at the N…

Just flew through Nairobi and had several hours to kill there. Was bored as hell so i started browsing the duty free shops. Came across one with Legos and first thing to catch my eye were two Harry Potter purple bus sets...alas when I looked at the price they were 70 bucks each...damn, had to pass. Then saw two whitecap bays...150 bucks each. passed. I guess the people who own the shop feel like they need to mark up sets so much in order to turn a profit. A bunch of old friends sets too but all were in terrible condition. Left very disappointed, thought it was going to be a goldmine for a second when I saw the Harry Potter sets.

Hello, I've been involved in various retail and service industries for over 30 years and was thinking about opening a brick and mortar toy store that involves LEGO in some way. Before I contact the LEGO Toy Dealers program, I would like to know if any of you have had experience trying to open a non-LEGO(franchise) LEGO toy store or if you know of any successful independent toy stores that do well selling LEGO sets. Information on this topic is scarce, so any information could help. Thank you.

I am curious how everyone keeps track of everything for taxes. You have to keep track of what you paid for a set then later you sell it for a profit and you have keep track of the eBay fees, PayPal fees, shipping fees. What if you bought a set in one year and sold it in another? I haven't sold much yet but I have purchased a lot. I can already see how it is going to be a lot of work keeping track of everything. I meet with my tax guy soon so I will have to go over all of this with him but I wanted to know what everyone else is doing?

I did not realize how hard it is for a young child (ages 3 and 5) to have a Lego investor as a father. I jumped in feet first 5 months ago without thinking that through. I will say it was just about enough of a drawback that I almost stopped. Originally I had thought to keep it from them but that is not my nature and kids notice metric tons (so it seems) of boxes being delivered weekly. However it got me thinking about how to use this as a teaching opportunity (we homeschool - all things are teachable ). So after talking with my wife and then the kids they each have decided to be polybag investors. We decided to limit it to 2 polybags a year at no more than 5.00 purc…

  6. So I've heard all the arguments from both sides. The side that says LEGO has stood the test of time as an investment, it is a different commodity, an active collectible that has always been able to reinvent itself due to concept of the toy. Then there's the other side that says look at some of the past collectibles that have eventually flopped, the overall history of collectible return on investments and for the matter history itself, all good things must come to an end, right? While LEGO is a good/great investment now, sites like this and many others are clearly showing that many people worldwide are doing the same thing, buying LEGO and stashing it for a fut…

There has been a lot of questions lately,"I'm looking at X set for X dollars, should I buy it?" Let me preface this by saying, I'm dumb and use to be dumber (I've been a member and buying & selling since Jan 13) I can see both sides. Guys want advise and others think you should put in more research. Most members are helpful and patient to a point. Jim Cramer says, you can make money investing in company stocks if your willing to devote the time and research. If not buy a mutual fund. There is no such thing as a Professional Lego investment advisor ( some guys may be close). Read this site, watch EBay, visit all the stores, and you can answer yours and other peoples qu…

I got this reply from Lego customer service today and thought I would share it. Note that they tell me later in the email that I might be able to buy it from a third party seller through Amazon. Interesting.... Confusing policy, Lego! It sounds like Lego wants third party sellers to fill in their gaps. Dear Ben, Thanks for getting in touch with us. We appreciate you taking the time to share with us your disappointment with our LEGO

  9. https://www.stonewars.de/news/lego-preiserhoehung-september-2022/ Looks like adult oriented sets are going to be hit the hardest. If a set is hit by a price increase, you can be fairly sure it's not going to retire. More than half of the sets not set to have price increases, are retiring at the end of the year. Like every other company, they got used to those "record profits" year after year, and don't want to give ground due to rising costs on their end.

Hi all, I rcently noticed the new Lego Juniors series on the shelves, Batman, "Defend the Batcave" (10672) and Spiderman, "Spider-Car Pursuit" (10665). They look pretty cool, and although in the "juniors" range, considering the cool mini figures, and the interest in super hero sets at the moment, does anyone have any thoughts on whether these might be a good investment or not? This is my first post, and have only been collecting for a month or so, and haven't even listed my inventory yet. Go easy on me.....Lol Thanks in advance, Sean

  11. Hello. As the title says I am looking for the WiiU version of LEGO Jurassic World w/ Dr. Wu mini toy bundle. The pack was sold at Target stores in the US. https://ibb.co/6vmMNhF

  12. Just watched this interesting and informative video about some of the current and recent Lego licenses and how they had been used by other construction brands in the past. Of special interes, Doctor Who, Yellow Submarine and Scooby Doo.

  13. So I have plenty of experience cleaning used lego by now and have my process down pretty well, but I was curious if anyone who buys large lots of used lego has any good tips for cleaning pieces with applied stickers to them?? I would think you cannot soak them like you can with regular bricks, and I know some people use the washing machine method and I would assume you definitely cannot do that with sticker pieces either. All I could think of is a wet paper towel and wipe them? or even a little alcohol on a paper towel and a quick wipe down? Curious to hear if anyone has figured out a good system for this! Thanks! ?

I think this site should have a section within the brickfolio that shows you all of your mini figures. I have a ton of figures that are separate from my sets that I would like to put into the brickfolio and check the value.

I was wondering about the model numbers for sets. I noticed all the sets are XXXXX-Y, where the Y is a 1 99.99% of the time. I know I have seen a few -2 sets here and there. I can't think of any off the top of my head but I know I have seen them. What is that all about? Is there a method to the madness of these set numbers? Will a set number tell me anything about a set?

LEGO is running a promotional deal right now if you buy palace cinema you get a free LEGO movie poster sticker (just like the ones in the windows on the set) Anyone think this would be a valuable investment? I suppose it depends partly on whether or not the movie ends up being popular or a complete flop.

I recently started buying Lego Star wars sets after all these years. I bought an ATAT, Star Destroyer, and a Super Star Destroyer and want to maybe buy a Death Star. Is it worth selling my Lego Movie Tin from the San Diego Comic Con or hold on to it and pay outta pocket for the death star???

Anyone else happen to man the Lego NES? Anyone else also looking to collect the Mario set as a whole? Thoughts and opinions? Speculations? Genuinely curious & new to the scene. Hoping to make an investment on the Lego Nintendo as a whole as my new hobby.

Maybe I missed this when it came out but it seems that Lego has fallen to 2nd place in the brand value rannking of 2016. Alleged price fixing and the veto against the Chinese artist are perhaps reasons for the decline whereas it´s clear that TFA has been good for DIsney. The beginning of the Lego backlash??? http://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2016-02-01/star-wars-success-propels-disney-to-world-s-most-powerful-brand?_sm_au_=iMVwHJ1rRrD4JqMQ

Well, if some of you have been following the Olympics you must've heard what happened to that poor South Korean girl in her match against a German. Long story short, they were tied, the Korean would've won as she had priority (I don't know what that means), there was one second left on the clock and they played that second time and time again until the German got the final touch/point eliminating the Asian. Anyways, look what I found here. I know that this is not related to collecting or investing but I didn't find a forum for general Lego content Ed/Jeff . It was really funny, with the space woman from Series 6 as the evil German xD

Don't know if anyone noticed, but I heard of it earlier this morning. You can now build with LEGO Bricks on Google Chrome. It's pretty simple and the bricks and colors are limited, but it's kept me entertained for HOURS!
