General Collecting and Investing Forum

Overall forum on thoughts, stories and ideas for collecting and investing your Legos.

  1. Hello all! I'm thinking of investing $2000 or so with the power of leverage. My question is, what would be the biggest bang for my buck? Things like this to consider: Which "big" set is about to retire and would be worth more down the road? Should I invest $2000 into one type of set? Or spread the cash around? Ghost Train or Vampyre Castle? How many years should I hang onto X set? Thanks guys.

  2. In the wake af the B-wing discount and a few people having what seems to be buyers remorse, if you could choose one set to discount for 50% what would it be? It can only be current sets, not upcoming or retired sets. I'm curious because there are so many ways people could go with this. Collectors would likely have a much different answer than investors. As an investor, I would love to see the Horizon Express at 50% off. Getting an almost guaranteed EOL winner at 50% off would be great. I bet there will be a lot off SSD responses...and not a bad choice either.

  3. What do you think, if anything, could ever top 10179 in price? I think whatever it was it would have to have an extremely large amount of pieces. Maybe if they did an insanely large modular of something of that nature? Anyone think anything could?

  4. Like the title says if you could only have one set for your personal collection what set would that be? To make it fun let's also put in what one set would you hold for investment? My choice for personal would be the Emerald Night steam Locomotive. Its my favorite set fun build, great detail, ILOVESTEAMTRAINS, awesome play, Super display piece. My Investment choice is a hard one but I have a hunch about the Haunted House so that's my one choice.

Anybody have a decent plan they can share for importing lego sets not available in US? My son has been begging me for the skinet (skunk) chima speedorz set. We went to lego, and they said not until August. It is on Amazon super cheap in the UK--but when I went to check out--said they couldn't send it to my address in US. I found some ebay sellers with it--but they wanted silly money to ship--the ones that post to US. Came out to almost $40! that way. If anybody in the UK has the opposite issue---let me know-and I'll buy what you need and send it for whatever UPS charges, if I can send you a speedorz set from AMZN, and you can send it to me.

  8. https://mashable.com/article/republican-attack-lego-youtuber-robbed-crowdfunding-campiagn/#P_sC6UrnsgqK Strangers are stepping up to help a YouTuber rebuild his Lego collection after thieves made off with thousands of dollars worth of Lego sets and destroyed years of his hard work. The YouTuber, who goes by republicattak, is known for his intricate videos of elaborate Star Wars Lego sets. On Friday, he took his 12,000 subscribers by surprise when he posted a video simply titled "bye." In it, the red-faced and visibly distressed YouTuber tells his fans that he has just come home from a work trip to find that burglars have stolen and destroyed his sets. "I do…

  9. Targeted more to you heavy hitters, Does anyone suggest an App/Tool/Suite for inventory tracking? Something you can use your cell phone or a tablet or a Bluetooth barcode scanner to scan items and automatically have them entered into a program or spreadsheet or database of any sort? Obviously, some customisability would be nice - I'd like to be able to enter cost paid, date purchased, etc. I've seen some stuff to relatively easily scan and import things into Excel, but I was wondering if anyone strongly suggested a particular way to go about this. I am trying to improve my methods. Any input appreciated.

I have been investing most of the legos in various themes with Star Wars being about 30% and the largest in my inventory. Now, With $2000 to invest. Would it be better to invest in modular s (fire brigade, town hall, grand emporium etc.) or other themes as hobbit, more star wars, Super heroes and LOTR or other themes. Just looking for about a year worth to recoup or max 2 years.

It seems like I'm having a harder time lately deciding whether or not to put my Lego investment dollars into older, rarer sets or buying new sets in multiples. I used to buy mostly older sets, but it seems that the market is getting a bit pricey. What is the best bang for your investment buck?

Citizen Brick recently came out with an "Albuquerque action squad" minifigure pack, with the figures being based on the characters from Breaking Bad . pic and link http://www.shop.citizenbrick.com/Albuquerque-Action-Squad-CB720571.htm they go for 55$ and are a limited run. what do you guys think on the potential profitability of these figs? keep in mind the Citizen Brick Breaking Bad Superlab Playset, which sold for 250$ is currently going for between 560$, and 700$ on ebay. http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_sacat=0&_from=R40&_nkw=superlab+playset&LH_Complete=1&LH_Sold=1&rt=nc will the profits be more of the same? or was it just a one tim…

  14. I recently purchased the City Passenger Train (7938) with a slightly damaged box for a great price. After reading the recent article concerning box conditions and resale value I'm tempted to hold on to this set for possible future sale, but I'm curious what others think about investing in sets that contain technology (ie: battery boxes, motors, etc)? Bricks never go out of date, but engines? The price/brick on 7938 is most likely higher due to the Power Functions inclusion, so if the technology falls out of favor then the price/brick would take a hit. I know 9v trains are still highly desirable for some collectors, so there's an example of an older technology hol…

  15. Usually when investing, I use money back ("shop with Amazon points") when purchasing already nicely discounted items. For example, I used $14 Amazon points when purchasing Jabba's Palace last Spring when it was $87 before points. This maximizes cost savings to the fullest. How do you feel about using points when buying items when they are slightly overpriced? For example, I can get a recently retired set for $10 more than it's "ebay going rate" ($120) but I have $58 in Amazon points to offset the higher than liked selling price. In this case, my purchase price would be w/in close striking distance of it's original MSRP. Your thoughts are welcomed.

I am wondering from the more seasoned collectors and investors what their view of vintage lego is. Firstly, how old does Lego need to be before it is considered to be vintage? Are we referring to sets that are 10, 20 or 30 years old? Secondly, does the set need to have the box? I know of collectors who have kept the box even when the set has been played with but if you have the complete set, does that not constitute the greater portion of the value? I also wonder what your views are on sets that are "almost complete" or "complete with substituted parts". I have seen a number of listings where this is noted however it is better to says so than to mislead the custo…

  17. Hey all. New here and I did search around for a topic similar to this so sorry if its a repeat. Always been interested in Legos since I was little but I guess you could say I've been out of the game for a long time. Anyway, I really like some of the new stuff like the Architecture theme. I didn't realize Lego was such an investing opportunity until I stumbled upon this site. I'm sure you get out of it what you put in, but I suppose what I am looking to do is pretty much be able to buy sets and break even by buying and selling a couple extra. If this isn't clear, basically buying three sets, saving two to sell and keeping one for myself (buy 3 sets for $20 each…

I guess people actually build these LEGO things, never heard of the concept myself lol

Hi, I am interested in understanding what percentage of your overall investment portfolio is in Lego. From all my investments stocks & shares, bonds, lego, ISA, savings, etc. I have around 40% of my overall investment funds tied up in Lego. On reflection I think this is too much, but won't say that if the returns are good! BTW - I am not including my pension in this. Thanks all for sharing.

Just had a thought. Reading through the various threads over the past few months I keep seeing people recommending; "buy this set, buy that set" and with my memory most of them go out of my head as soon as someone mentions the next hot tip. So, here is my Wish List of sets to buy before they go EOL: 7938-1: Passenger Train 8110-1: Unimog U400 3315-1: Olivia

Of all the new 2013 sets (sets that have been released or are planned to be released in 2013), which set do you think will be the biggest investment winner years from now?

  22. I have heard some of our very large seasoned investors here mention that small investors will have a tough road ahead and may be going away due to increased competition. I am curious, at what point do you think an investor will be large enough to succeed? Will only those with 50 tower bridges on hand and 20k plus in annual sales be able to thrive or will their be smaller investors like myself who will be able to make things work well? Am I wasting my time here? Should I go big or go home?

Earlier, I saw a post but now I do not know where to find it. There was a statement made by one member. He or she said "hopefully we are not like investors buy from other investors" and that results in increasing price. I do believe there are lego lovers joining the lego market every second. There must be someone who was lego fan when he or she was young and later picks the hobby up again..... But thinking about "investors buy from other investors" just concerns me. I, myself, started investing just three months ago after accidentally finding out why some sets were so expensive and later realizing that was called "retired sets"...and then knowing there was actually an…

  25. So 2017 has given us new and improved SW UCS Milf and Snowspeeder, a massive Ninjago Cty, a rocket, the biggest ever modular and Minecraft sets, a London Bus, Fishing Store and that POTC ship that seemed to be love or hate, amongst other sets. We even got a big Nexi castle. It´s been a weak year for Technic and Architecture fans, though. Is this the strongest year so far for 1000 part and above sets or can you remember a better one NOT FROM AN INVESTMENT STANDPONT but rather as a fan of Lego? If you can, please say which and why stood out for you.
