General Collecting and Investing Forum

Overall forum on thoughts, stories and ideas for collecting and investing your Legos.

  1. Started by Migration,

I came out of my Dark Ages a couple years ago when I found all my old Lego while cleaning out my moms basement. As a child I thought I had a huge Lego collection, and by 80's standards maybe I did. Anyway while researching eBay prices on 15 pounds of random old Lego I was shocked by how much it was selling for. And a second part time job was born. As a child I would build a set once, play with it for a while, then break it apart and use the pieces for my own creations. I mention this because instead of selling them I gave all my old Lego to my then 5 year old. He is more of a build, play, display, play some more type of collector (he must get that from his mother). So tod…

  2. I loved Lego as a kid (still wish I had my old Black Seas Barracuda and Imperial Flasgship, not to mention my Forestmen and Blacktron II sets) and only recently came out of the dark ages thanks to my 7-year-old nephew who is Lego obsessed. I've been lurking around this site for a while, but this is my first post. Anyway.... I was recently able to score 4 x 7471 Mars Exploration Rover, 3 x 4701 Sorting Hat and 1 x 8009 R2-D2 from a local online listing, all still factory sealed. The Brickpicker market value for these sets is around $800 USD, so I felt pretty good about getting them all for $300 CAD. I'm assuming that there isn't generally much hope for further gr…

  3. Hi, The question says it all really - I've just acquired some loose lego 2nd hand that all says 'Pat. Pending' on it. If I sold this loose, by the kg/lb for example should I expect a higher return compared to doing the same with modern bricks, or is it worth the same, or perhaps even less? (typically I can get about

Citizen Brick recently came out with an "Albuquerque action squad" minifigure pack, with the figures being based on the characters from Breaking Bad . pic and link http://www.shop.citizenbrick.com/Albuquerque-Action-Squad-CB720571.htm they go for 55$ and are a limited run. what do you guys think on the potential profitability of these figs? keep in mind the Citizen Brick Breaking Bad Superlab Playset, which sold for 250$ is currently going for between 560$, and 700$ on ebay. http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_sacat=0&_from=R40&_nkw=superlab+playset&LH_Complete=1&LH_Sold=1&rt=nc will the profits be more of the same? or was it just a one tim…

Looking around for things to list and come across two Haunted Houses, two Nintendos, two Pirates of Barracuda Bay, one Assembly Square, four Hedwigs, and two Roller Coasters. I bought these when things were super tight on the market but just don't have the follow through to get them back on the market. I'm much better at the long, slow hold. I really hope things are tight before the holidays so I can unload these and buy more Treehouses instead! Anyone else struggle with this?

  10. I am not a fan of political discourse in LEGO forums but since this website is about making $$ on your LEGO sets, I felt it was relevant to mention here as it has direct ramifications on the buying and selling of LEGO sets. (and a million other things.) Or maybe this does not affect LEGO sets. I am a worker bee, not a lawyer... "This morning the Supreme Court announced that it will hear arguments in a case with far-reaching implications for anyone who has ever sold or given away goods that contained copies of copyrighted works. Public Knowledge, along with the Electronic Frontier Foundation and U.S. PIRG, filed an amicus brief in January urging the Court to hear th…

I'm trying to ascertain whether a larger set produced in 1999 would have plastic wrap over the entire box. I'm contemplating buying a set locally, but want to make sure this wasn't done at a later date.

  14. I am taking a short trip with my wife to my parents soon. They live in the middle of nowhere. I was going to hit up the local stores and see about finding some sets. We are flying Southwest, so our bags fly free (as they should!) and we are only taking two bags, meaning we have two to spare. I know how hard the handlers are with baggage and there is no way to stop them from putting the box on the bottom of everything else. Has anyone done this and what what your experience? Thanks!

  15. Lego just celebrated their 60th anniversary. But their "Brick" series (and clones) has remained the same design and engagement system, 60 years on. Could there be a revolution on such type bricks? For adults who buy and play the toy bricks, nostalgia could be the main reason; but there are no conflicts with utilizing new designs/technology to the objects of nostalgia. One of the best examples would be the VolksWagen Beetle. V W completely re-engineered their new Beetle, while incorporating some of the styles/impressions associating to their old Beetle, ending up with great success. Had they continued with the exact same technology and style of their old Beetle, i…

I made a New Year’s resolution to myself that I would try to contribute some content here as opposed to just reading the posts of others. And so here’s my first offering. I started collecting (hoarding?) Lego sets years back when my son was 8 or 9. As others know, while the hunt can be fun, storage usually becomes a problem. Thus, I thought it might be fun to to kiss and tell all of our Lego hiding places. My top three are: #3 - Empty suitcases #2 - Under our Bedroom dresser and #1 - in the void under my kids bed! I had this epiphany 4 or 5 years back and have managed to store/hide over 80 sets. The sets themselves are stacked vertically, with one set…

  17. I have two questions I'd like some help answering. I ran some searches but didn't turn up anything. 1. What is the set which has had the longest production run? Many people now seem aghast that MMV and DS (to say nothing yet of GE and FB) are still with us, so I'd like to know what the precedents are, if any. 2. Last year, Nov and Dec specifically, there was a whirlwind of speculation about which sets were going to be done for. So far it looks like only two of the many (major) contenders have entered the Lego afterlife. So my second question is: if a set makes it through the holiday frenzy and returns in bulk for the new year, is it likely going to be produced…

Any of you know of or use some type of program that can cull tracking numbers from ebay sold to get a real tracking on them? The tracking in the phone app is a joke. Many of my sales show as acknowledged, even though they were delivered 4 days ago. I am trying to figure out after 200 sales..why only 3 gave feedback. Was wondering if packages weren't delivered yet..when I noticed this mess. I've been cutting track number out of ebay sold, and pasting into usps and getting real track info...but that got old after 3, and real old after 5.

I was wondering about the model numbers for sets. I noticed all the sets are XXXXX-Y, where the Y is a 1 99.99% of the time. I know I have seen a few -2 sets here and there. I can't think of any off the top of my head but I know I have seen them. What is that all about? Is there a method to the madness of these set numbers? Will a set number tell me anything about a set?

Hello all, first post here! Sorry if this has been asked before, with a quick search I couldn't find the answer. So I'm from Finland and got very intrested in lego-investments. After digesting the idea for a while, digging up bits of various information and following the thumbler set's retirement, I finally decided to jump in. I bought the sandcrawler set from Lego-store last night as a bit of a rash decision. It cost me 350 euros in Finland. Now after looking up more on the set I noticed it's being sold for 300 dollars in US. So I paid about 70e overprice for my investment? Can I expect to make money in the aftermarket with this set and is brickvesting in gener…

Hi there, Figured this would be the best forum for my topic. I buy the majority of my Lego from eBay, which I keep as an investment, some of my best turnovers have been in the CMF range (in particular the animal mascots). However, I have recently turned my attention to full-sized Lego sets BNIB mostly in the Starwars range (these sets seem to have the greatest value increases due to the nostalgia factor). I have just ordered the Resistance Troop carrier (75140) from eBay at £40, just 2/3 of the RRP. I know though that as soon as it arrives I will have the urge to open it and build it... If I did so, then I would definitely keep the box, manual and plastic bags in pr…

Any fellow Canadian investors find these in stores? I've nosed around, but not much to be seen - maybe I'm partially blind? Also, for US investors, are the polybags limited to a certain number or can you buy as much as you please? Even the TRU Canada site limits LOTR polybags to one per person Lastly - planning a nice overnight trip to Michigan and looking to score some LEGO duty free! What polybags are currently available and where? (The trip is still two weeks away, but I like planning LEGO-related shopping)

So I got to go to Brickworld in Schaumburg IL today! Despite my medical issues I packed an oxygen-tank and a wheelchair and my Dad volunteered to push my sorry butt around the displays (which were amazing). But then I heard Adam Reed Tucker was around somewhere and something clicked in my brain; I had my "Robie House" instruction booklet in my car! Autograph time! So I got it and scoured the place for Mr. Tucker only to find out he was out of the convention hall. After mentioning it to one of the Brickworld "employees" who turned out to be one of the co-owners of the place (his name escapes me, I'll find it, I have to send him a thank you card), he told me he'd …
