Technic Sets

Discussion for investing and collecting Technic themed sets.

  1. Started by CNH1974,

I have recently started breaking up a bulk lot of technic set, mostly from the 2000s. Unfortunately most are not complete. But the BP MISB prices for them seem to be very high, compared to the RRPs back in 2007-8 etc... So do large Technic sets always do well? Especially ones that are popular vehicles, trucks, diggers etc... Also with the extra long life span of some sets, like Death Star and the Modulars do Technic sets still adhere to the 2-2.5 year lifespan. A quick check shows that all 2011 sets have gone but all the 2012 are available at the moment. 9398 Crawler is at 20% off at various places in the UK. Do people expect this to be gone by the end of this y…

Hi, I recently acquired one of these MISB for 80 euros. MSRP is 120 euros and it seems to be hard to find at less than that on Amazon and in other big shops. Would you a) flip it now part it out c) keep hold of it till EOL. I am not sure how popular it is being a new set and whether in 2 years time it will be a consolidated set. What do you all think?

    With the 20% off + $10 GC deal and current prices at TRU, what do you think of these: - Logging Truck 9397 (retired): $150 * 0.8 * 1.08 - $10 = $119.60 - 4x4 Crawler 9398 (probably retiring in 6 months): $190 * 0.8 * 1.08 - $10 = $154.16 - Mobile Crane Mk II 42009 (not retiring soon): $200 * 0.8 * 1.08 - $10 = $162.80 - Service Truck 42008 (not retiring soon): $130 * 0.8 * 1.08 - $10 = $102.32 (I added 8% tax so I can compare them with no-tax prices online) These sets all have Power Function but only 9398 has remote control. The F1 Racer 42000 is nice but not included because TRU price is outrageous ($160) For now I just grabbed 42009, 9…

I assume it is retiring - it is basically sold out everything and all the other Technic sets seem to be going away. It seemingly doubled right after it disappeared. I managed to grab a couple more but I never would have expected this. Definitely wouldn't expect it to already be outperforming the 9391 tracked crane. Anyone not miss out and grab a couple of these?

So I stopped by a small Walmart this morning to pick up a site to store order. Check out the uber small Lego section, and there are two 42000 Grand Prix Racers on the shelf. No shelf tag, and they didn't scan. Customer service checked and they were MSRP. I have never seen Technic in store there, or any Walmart's that I can recall. What gives? Is this new?

Found a couple decent used technic deals on Craig's recently...and decided to try building--instead of my usual standard inventory using bricklink. Well that...and I didn't want to count out a hundreds of tiny parts...many that needed to be measured! So....the biggest were the 2 super cars. The black and the red. The black wasn't too hard...but took about 6 hours. I loved it...and the family thought it was great...so we did the red one. My moly! This is the hardest and most rewarding build of any hobby type thing I have ever done. I am a 38 year old manufacturing engineer with 20 years of industrial automation and robot experience. This build took me a good 10 …

  11. I just placed an order for 4 unimogs yesterday. The max allowable was 5 yesterday. I logged in to look at my order and noticed that the available for purchase is now up to 99. This happened to the Vampyre Castles on my last order and now they are sold out. If you don't have any UNIMOGS it may be time to get them. Unfortunatly no free christmas sets or employee polybag. Oh well.

I have an old 8297 Off Roader, I noticed on ebay people are successfully selling them for $400+ I rebuilt mine, intending to sell it and get a good $200 for it (doesn't include box) but I encountered a problem- missing piece. One of the big plates with the grate sticker on it used for the hood, id is 4524663 (the one that goes on the left of the hood from the drivers point of view) Without this piece, I doubt I can get very much at all, no where near what I'm hoping to get.. Does anyone know where I can get a hold of one of these? I'd be willing to buy it off someone

In Quacs Excellent Technic Articles, he went over how well construction sets do: http://community.brickpicker.com/blog/4/entry-304-lego-technic-investments-on-the-fast-track-or-in-the-shop-part-2/ He also went over this set. I am looking at getting more into the technic theme. I wanted to get some other opinions on the set. It is already doing pretty well on Ebay.

So recently I discovered how awesome technic is from buying 41999s. Really only into the flagship sets. I've picked up a new 8275 bulldozer (nib for 330!) and a new 8043 excavator. Now I want a mobile crane. I read about the 8421, but recently there's the 42009, which looks more badass but not as motorized. What to do? Pay ~500 for a new 8421 or get the 42009 and mod it up to badass status? Which one would look more to sale with my other two models?

Been recently getting into lego and learned about this guy. Saw on YouTube what it could do and want one for myself. Anyone willing to trade? I've got a few good stuffs like the crawler. Pm me so we can talk

If I have around $400 budget, which one of the followings would most likely has bigger return in a long run? 2 x Unimog U400 2 x Mobile Crane MKII or 1 x Unimog plus 1 Mobile Crane MKII or should I just spend the budget on the Haunted House + Tower Bridge instead? What do you guys think?

  17. Started by Leicamarc,

Anyone bought the 42009 for investment yet? I ordered one today, but I don't know if I should build it, or keep it for investment after reading the following: http://community.brickpicker.com/blog/4/entry-304-lego-technic-investments-on-the-fast-track-or-in-the-shop-part-2/ Let me know what you guys think. I just started buying Lego as investment, but I must say: Its addicting

  18. Not sure if this should go in Technic, but seemed the closest topic: Hi, have been given an old Mindstorms set and the software is for Windows 98 - it does appear to be working on Windows 7 but was wondering if there were ever updates available? If so, could someone please point me in the right direction for a download? Thanks!

  20. After reading the review form OrcKing's thread, I was wondering if Unimog 8110 was still an interesting choice from an investment standpoint as it will no longer be the largest Technic set out there once 42009 is released. Besides being the current largest Technic set out there, is there another reason why Unimog can be a good investment? Do large Technic sets appreciate well over time? I guess that being a licensed Mercedes Benz set also kicks the value up a little bit. Thoughts?

  21. Started by TheOrcKing,

Well, this one caught me by surprise. If anything just for the simple fact it is a Technic set and I haven't seen any reviews on the 2013 ones save for maybe one or two others. Come on, it's Technic. Why is no one reviewing these?! Then again, I don't see these in store anywhere come to think of it. Here is the link. Name: Mobile Crane MK II Number: 42009 Pieces: 2,606 Retail: US - $219.99, CAN - $249, AUS - $279.99, UK -

  22. I recently was offered on Ebay a brand new, sealed 8458 for the price of $350 plus $20 for shipping. I understand that these sets are rare nowadays, and that some can go up to quite a bit. Although a total of $370 is a little bit over the budget that I wanted, is it still worth getting? Keep in mind that the set is brand new and sealed, and that these offers don't come often.

  23. Hi there, I must confess that I am not a Lego collector. However since I am planning on moving soon I started emptying my closets last weekend. Next to a lot of old stuff I happened to come across a never been opened box of Lego Technic bought in Germany in 1986 with the number 5580. The box is in a good condition, has however some signs of bad storage (shame on me!) Since I am thinking about selling it: can anyone tell me what it's worth? I searched the forum earlier but didn't find anything about its value... So, sorry in advance if I am asking in the wrong section or if there is something about the value in this forum that I didn't find. Anyhow, I'…

I have one of these stored up for investment, I am thinking of grabbing a few more since I can get them for a decent price at $105. This isn't a big time technic set but it it is still a very large truck with PF included, does anyone have any thoughts on how it will perform? I haven't tracked a lot of these technic sets and since it isn't a piece of standard machinery like a crane or backhoe, I am not sure how to check out comps for it.

I noticed that there has been very little mention on this forum of the old Model Team sets or older Technic sets. I remember as a kid, I always wanted Model Team sets but never got them (though thats not to say that my parents didn't provide a good supply of great lego sets). In fact, when I got my first job, the first thing I bought was a 10151 Blue Fury (luckily it was soon after the re-release so it was easy to find MISB). However, it wasn't until recently that I was able to start fulfilling the rest of my childhood Lego dreams. In January, I finally got my hands on 8448 Super Street Sensation and built it. I was honestly very disappointed when I saw 8070; it's ve…
