General Collecting and Investing Forum

Overall forum on thoughts, stories and ideas for collecting and investing your Legos.

  1. I am collecting Lego store I Love "City" magnets and keychains. I have found some from ebays. However, Ebay has very limited collections of them. Do you have any good idea to collect them? My plan is to make a phone call to lego store and ask them if they take an order over phone and send I Love "City" magnets and keychains to my address? Do you guys know which lego stores take an order over the phone? By the way, I do not know how many different I Love "City" magnets and keychains have been released. Thanks a lot for your ideas

I have a 3 year old that is interested in Lego/duplo. Should I start buying Lego now given that he will be building in 5 years? I only buy when there is 50% Msrp. This is for personal use and I do not expect to make money. 1. Am I getting too far? How often do you see 50% off Lego? 2. For the sets that got remade often (police station, fire station), are the newer always better than the older versions? 3. Any theme that I should avoid? For example, is today 's technic line technology different from 5 years ago?

  3. I'm looking for a new/unopened first edition 10179 millennium falcon as well as a 10182 cafe corner. I'm having problems finding sellers that will ship to Australia with items in excellent condition that are not about four times the market rate. The acrylic boxes are cool, but I can build one myself for considerably less. So.. if any of you are hoarding these sets waiting for a rainy day to sell them and you can ship to Australia then get in contact. I have money and I'm not wasting anyone's time. Just looking for a fair price, excellent condition unopened box and very careful shipping. If you already have one of these on ebay that is not shipping to Australia, c…

I'm going to this on Sunday. If still available do you think the tin can Luke kit is worth a pick up? I have no idea how these do on secondary market, my instinct would say they would do great! I've never been to a convention before so not really sure how all of it will play but will definitely be visiting LEGO.

Since these themes are not ones I am very knowledgeable about, can anyone share some opinions here? I know the big box retailers don't carry these usually, so anytime we get a 25% coupon from B&****** or whatnot, should I be picking up Arch sets? I am a little leery on the investment value of these, as the primary driving investment force seems to be minifigures, and obviously these have none. Should these be flipped for a 10-15% profit after coupon? Or held on to? Which of these sets will be worth holding on to? If any? Technic - Similar sort of thing. Should I be using TRU coupons/discounts to load up on some of these sets? Any thoughts as to what makes …

  6. Any one in the Ottawa area in Ontario Canada might be interested to know there will be a Lego Auction at the and of July. I will supply a link below. A local man passes away his dieing wish is to have his massive lego collection given to children hospital. Unfortunately hospital can't take used toys so it's doing the next best thing they are auctioning off all lego with 100% going to hospital. There are sets from the 90's to 2015. Over 400 mini figures. http://m.ottawasun.com/2015/07/17/lego-labour-of-love-goes-on-sale-to-help-cheo

There have, and always will be, scammers out to get your money. It could be that cheap 10188 Death Star on eBay going for $199 BIN or a $500 10179 Falcon on Craigslist. Perhaps we could have a 'sticky' thread where we post scammer or suspicious listings so buyers and Brickpickers can be alerted? Also note that if you find a fraudulent listing on eBay, you can email ebay. There's a 'report seller' link on the Seller's bio page. Ebay are generally quick to respond to such emails and pulls down listings quick. Having said that, here's a story that I posted in another thread but thought it might be apt to post it here. And why do people do such things for a couple…

I thought this might be a little entertaining. Lets see how everyone's Brickfolio is doing. Click on "My Brickfolio" and get the current amount of your Brickfolio value. Then click on "View Brickfolio Items" and then "View Entire Collection". Scroll all the way to the bottom and get the total "Purchase Price" (assuming you have been entering this in your Brickfolio all along). This is the total price you have paid for all the sets in your Brickfolio Now take your "Brickfolio Value" and subtract your "Total Purchase Price". This will give you the total dollar value of profit from your Brickfolio. Now take your "Profit" and divide it by your current "Total Purchase P…

  9. Hello I was just hoping to get some input on which is the better deal. I recently purchased 2 79008 on sale for $70 each at Walmart but was curious whether I should return them, and pick up a Grand Emporium they have on the shelf with a slightly damaged box. The prices are about the same but I think the grand emporium is retiring sooner. Any thoughts?

  11. Am I missing something? I was just looking at the Lego March Calendar and it shows they will be selling an EXCLUSIVE set starting march 1st... Anyone have any clue as to what set this will be? Thanks!

  12. Greetings fellow pickers! As I mentioned in my introduction post, my Lego fever began running rampant last year when my nephew dug out my old Black Monarch castle last year. I decided I'd purchase a large lot and begin collecting again. I bought a 20lb. lot of assorted colors from eBay. After sorting through and figuring out what I had, it turns out that I had about 80% of set 6210 (Jabba's Sail Barge) and about 40% of set 6209 (Slave I 2nd Edition). None of them came with the minifigs, but I did eventually track those down. I was mortified at how much the minifigs were. That being said, these are 2 iconic sets, and I have them proudly displayed on my desk at …

  13. Interesting article from the Alistair Barr of the USA Today. The future of LEGO set procurement is shifting more and more to online sales. The IPads of the world are making it easier to buy(and sell) LEGO sets. The article also mentions LEGO sets as "hot toys" and mentions eBay as the place to buy sets that cannot be found at primary retailers. Overall, a positive for LEGO investing in my opinion... 14. I am looking for any opinions on the highest price these two sets will hit. Also, are either of these sets officially discontinued yet? I know you can't buy either of these on LEGO.com Thanks in advance.

  16. Slightly random observation but has anyone else noticed (or can anyone correct me) that any lego set with "village" in the title is 1) pretty epic as a collector piece and 2) not bad as an investment? Medieval market village Mill village raid Entire winter village collection Ewok Village (great set and 100% I think this will be a long term winner) Native American Village (6766) - only came across this one when doing my "research" and this actually looks awesome Minecraft micro village - ok not as much an epic set as the above but still not a bust I'd say. Pretty much unlike sets with "city" in the title. There are some neat ones there but its no where near the slam dunk …

There were countless debates on here as to how The LEGO Movie would impact the re-seller market. I think we are starting to witness the initial impact with the influx of new users on the daily deals threads. I can't help but notice all the newbie questions and everyone pouncing on every deal that comes in. Meanwhile, the savvy veterans sit back and apply their strategy methodically. I'm not a veteran but I'm definitely noticing a trend on the forums lately. Is this the beginning of a new era of LEGO investing or just a short-term spike in activity because of this crazy week?

  21. I just came out of my dark ages this past December and since then I've been buying up sets left and right. My passion is really in LotR/Hobbit sets which I'm beyond obsessed with. On friday I picked up 4 copies of Uruk Hai Army that were on clearance, initially to help flesh out my army building efforts but then I thought maybe I should hold onto them. For a quick back story I have 1 copy of each LotR/Hobbit set except 2 Helm's Deep, 6 Uruk Hai Army, and 5 Weathertop. All of these sets were bought to build, display, and MOC. I also have 2 Mines of Moria that were bought to invest. Now I have a few other sets (City, Ninjago, MF) that I bought purely to invest and I als…

Hi, some of you may have read my thread where I meet Adam Reed Tucker at a lego convention and get several autographs from him on a Robie House instruction booklet, a 1st edition sealed John Hancock Center set and a T-shirt. Recently I also acquired an Exo-Suit set signed by the great Peter Reid himself! Right now, I have the sets and instruction booklet stored inside heavy duty freezer bags and kept out of sunlight and humidity. but I was wondering if anyone has any ideas on how to store them better, and maybe have them be more displayable? I know The Container Store has clear plastic polycarbonate boxes they make for footballs, baseballs and other sports m…

Hi all. I am new to this forum and just came out of my dark years. For the last 3 months I've tried to grab all the sets I could before they were discontinued, (at the cost of makin' my wife mad, but that's another topic ).Considering I am Italian (and I work for an Italian company, so I earn euros) but I live in Japan, I could partially benefit of the huge rise of the european currency compared to the yen (currently the euro-yen exchange is more or less 1:144,5). Anyway. I noticed from the start that lego in Usa are considerably cheaper that in the rest of the world. Still, Lego seemed to somehow fix prices according to the different currencies, at least to a certain ext…

I am a new lego investor within the last year however, I'd like to think of myself as pretty smart when it comes to buying them on the budget that I have. I see people writing on here how they have 30 of one set or the guy who got 100 VH. What would you give as advice as far as where, or what to pick up. I see a lot of people stating they got amazing deals on some lego's but wondering where these occur as all the places I ever look I find nothing like what I read. The set I have the most of would be the Spidey Chase which I have 9 of I typically go for 3 of each. Thanks for your input and advice in advance!
