I'm starting to worry that the world is going to have a warped view of Korean people w/ the prevalence of K-Drama

...but ofcourse it's not like I expect every Indian family to bust out with a Bollywood dance in the middle of their day either

I've watched a few K-Dramas before Squid Game on Netflix and the prevalence of slapping others in the face has always stuck out to me. I just don't get to see that on other shows near as much.

Fun fact: the lead actor for Squid Game was the lead actor for Chief of Staff. A pretty good political thriller K-Drama. But my favorite K-Drama so far is definitely Memories of the Alhambra, it was chills-down-the-spine good for me.

My wife have watched K-Drama long before Netflix thought they were popular.  According to her, the Netflix (co-)produced series had better special effects but tend to cut the story short by not having more than 1 season or 2.

One of the most epic K-drama series is Arthdal Chronicles.  Think Dune meets LotR meets Conan.

But they have all kinds of shows for all kinds of viewers.  One of their game shows pit high IQ people against each other.  The challenges / tasks were so sophisticated we had to re-watch a couple of time to get what they tried to accomplish.

The popularity of BTS (K boy band) should straighten up any warped view people might have :sarcastichand:

K-dramas have been around since the early 90s; over the decades the basic plot of over-romanticized relationships with class-mixing with unbelievable tragedy has only grew in terms of genre (historical, sci fi, casinos, restaurants, big business, horror, coming of age, etc)

Kdramas have a crazy way of getting a viewer to get vested in individual characters...it's mind boggling why after a few minute a viewer suddenly cares what happens to a character...

Now that sounds like my kind of show! Added to my netflix list.

The internet plays important role in increasing popularity of KPop and K-drama.  The US music and entertainment industry tried to ignore this worldwide phenomena for the longest time.  Now the network TVs just straight up copying / basing their shows on Korean TV shows.  For example, "The Masked Singer" and "I Can See Your Voice" were originally from S Korea.

I liked it too, I thought it was pretty good. Did you watch "I Care A Lot"?  I thought it was also pretty good as a thriller.  It has Rosamund Pike in it from "Gone Girl".

I liked it up until the final act and then it lost me. A lot of buzz around award season with this film and then it got snubbed by nearly every award.

I like a film that subverts expectations and challenges audiences, but I think that ending was a rough one.

Started watching squid game yesterday with the wife. We're through the first 6 episodes.
I honestly don't know what all the fuss is about? It's pretty awkward and cringy.
Most of the characters are unlikeable. The dialogue is... mostly laughable.
The actions of the characters make little sense. Is everyone in Korea broke?

I don't think it's a cultural thing as movies like Oldboy & Train to Busan were amazing.
This feels like Parasite all over again. I didn't understand why anyone liked that either.

Try changing from the default of English dubbed, to Korean with English subtitles. It makes it a little less cringy.

We've been watching English dubbed with English subtitles at the same time (first checking for accuracy and then just leaving it that way).
I agree, reading the subs with Korean spoken makes it less cringy, but the dialog is still very awkward and weird.

That being said the show is eye candy. Aesthetically speaking, The sets are vibrant and beautiful.
I've also enjoyed the episodes 6,7 & 8 way more than the previous 5. We'll watch the finale tonight.

The show is just "okay". That's a hard okay, at that. I just don't see the big fuss.

PS - Am I the only one that gets Power Rangers 'feels' whenever the red masked guys are wandering the island? Lol.

Looking for recommendations...our family tradition is to watch a horror flick every night through October. Well, now that we have been doing this for a few of years, we are running out of movies! Does anyone have any good recommendations for a good scary flick? I feel like we've seen most, but I'm sure there are some other more obscure flicks out there that are worthy of a watch...

Best horror flick....ready,,,go!!!

House of Wax surprised me way back in 2005. I haven't watched it since though so..
