I just don't get to see that on other shows near as much. Fun fact: the lead actor for Squid Game was the lead actor for Chief of Staff. A pretty good political thriller K-Drama. But my favorite K-Drama so far is definitely Memories of the Alhambra, it was chills-down-the-spine good for me. According to her, the Netflix (co-)produced series had better special effects but tend to cut the story short by not having more than 1 season or 2. One of the most epic K-drama series is Arthdal Chronicles. Think Dune meets LotR meets Conan. But they have all kinds of shows for all kinds of viewers. One of their game shows pit high IQ people against each other. The challenges / tasks were so sophisticated we had to re-watch a couple of time to get what they tried to accomplish. The internet plays important role in increasing popularity of KPop and K-drama. The US music and entertainment industry tried to ignore this worldwide phenomena for the longest time. Now the network TVs just straight up copying / basing their shows on Korean TV shows. For example, "The Masked Singer" and "I Can See Your Voice" were originally from S Korea. It's pretty awkward and cringy. Most of the characters are unlikeable. The dialogue is... mostly laughable. The actions of the characters make little sense. Is everyone in Korea broke? I don't think it's a cultural thing as movies like Oldboy & Train to Busan were amazing. This feels like Parasite all over again. I agree, reading the subs with Korean spoken makes it less cringy, but the dialog is still very awkward and weird. That being said the show is eye candy. Aesthetically speaking, The sets are vibrant and beautiful. I've also enjoyed the episodes 6,7 & 8 way more than the previous 5. We'll watch the finale tonight. The show is just "okay". That's a hard okay, at that. I just don't see the big fuss. PS - Am I the only one that gets Power Rangers 'feels' whenever the red masked guys are wandering the island? It's tough....I'm not a big fan of dubbing or sub-titles. The dubbing is never accurate enough and too distracting. And the sub-titles are tough for me because I'm a slower reader, so I can't read and watch at the same time. It reminded me a lot of late 80s kung fu movies, but with better budget. When I started it I had no preconceptions...just saw it trending top 3 on Netflix and gave it a whirl. I think the cringe-worthy element is part of the appeal. Kdrama and other Korean shows (e.g., Kim's Convenience) have a different vibe than mainstream hollywood...almost like food from different countries have different spices and ingredients from western dishes.
