General Buying & Selling

Overall discussion on the buying and selling of LEGO

  1. Guest

I just got a great deal on 30+lbs of Lego blocks from yard sale. I plan on putting the sets together and buying the instructions from bricklink. After I have some fun putting them together I thought I would sell them on eBay. Many of the sets are retired and I should be able to get some money for them. What I want to know, is it worth buying the original boxes to complete the set. Also if I decide to keep the mini figs will it hurt the cost they go for. Thanks!

http://www.ebay.com/itm/1-2010-Lego-Star-Wars-10212-Imperial-Shuttle-Factory-Sealed-NEW-Unopened-Retired-/121097691127 I was very impressed with this auction. If this is someone on here, good for you. Maybe Amazon could take a lesson from this?

  3. I know we have a bunch of full time Ebayers here so my question is this? What is the best time of the day or night to have your auction end? I think I know the obvious answer but I am open to different opinions. Thanks for any help as I am a fairly new eBay seller (52 feedbacks).

My local walmart has some Ghost Trains that have been sitting on the shelf for ages. They are on clearance for 54 right now, which while not being a bad deal, isn't that much below amazon has gone to, when including tax. I am thinking about offering 40 each. Has this worked for anyone? Any advice?

Just a heads up. Barnes & Noble sent out 20% off one item coupons to all those with a membership this morning. They are good through the 14th. Stack those on top of any sales + 10% membership discount and you can get a pretty decent discount.

So I have an extra $150.00 give or take for a purchase, here are my options 2 VC from walmart at $69.00 each or Mines of moria $65.70 Helms Deep $115.97 What would you do? I like the discount on the VC but don't want to miss out on the LOTR sets. Probably won't be able to buy any more big sets until June.

With the Monster Fighter series being waved out at walmart I wonder when the next price drop on the clearances will be? Everything is around 30% off right now. Will they move them down within the next week, and to what amount? What are your expectations and past experiences?

  10. Trying to stay calm... How do you guys handle normal shelf wear on products you sell? Just annoying dealing with buyers sometimes... Do you just not sell anything unless its Mint? Just sent a guy a JP with normal shelf wear, which was in my description and I know the truth is that he is having buyer's remorse. I would have rated his box at an 7.5 if Mint is a 9 and 10 is impossible. Just frustrated a bit. Looking for advice and guidance moving forward so I don't have hiccups during Christmas.

When it comes to any "collection" I use the rule of 2 or 3. I usually find this is the best way to get rid of a collection. Problem listing it all is usually bigger the lot the less you will make per set. But if you sell it all individuall, the less desirable pieces may not sell. So I like to group them in small groups to ensure everything will get bought, and so I ddon't limit my buyers with a giant lot and don't end up screwed because only one or two people are bidding. I would keep them as sets grouped by theme. Just my 2 cents.

Got the circular in mail today---BOGO 50% off on LEGO starting tomorrow. Doesn't include clearance. Not sure if there will be too many deals to be had given some of their prices, but you never know. Olivia's House and some others are usually priced below retail.

  14. I have found an actual government agency that investigates all internet crimes, it is an internet crime complaint center that combines resources of the FBI and National White Collar Crime Center (NW3C), from what I can tell, they actually pursue internet crime activity unlike your typical police department. For those who have had items illegally drop shipped from internet orders or been scammed in any other way, they are there to help. www.ic3.gov

How long do you wait to sell a product? Are there any unique strategies? Sorry if something similar has been posted already, there have been quite a few polls lately.

Hello, Potentially dumb question here, or at least a question I think I have found an answer to, but wanted to confirm with the community here: Are basic brick boxes, such as the 6177 Builders of Tomorrow, collectible? I suspect that, being simple collections of standard bricks also readily available via Pick-a-Brick, they would not increase much in value. Is this correct?

Ok lets make a European discussion thread about all important stuff for Europe LEGO investing. I am sure there are many similarities to US investing, and entering is the same, but how do Europe investors/AFOLs get their sets. Do you mostly use Amazon.uk.com? Do you use Ebay... How do you prepare to ''fight'' US competition with such discounted prices... I have a good idea for Jeff and Ed, when/if they look this thread. It would be neat, if we could get option for Brickfolio to be set in Europe, and our price points and retail numbers would be 25% higher than US. Would not skew graphs that badly. Because now it seems even with Discount of 20% I end up seeing a…

  21. We've discussed parting out a set for profit, and also about listing a set with the minifigures removed, but what about the opposite? My question may be more for builders than collectors but here goes. Have you ever bought a set for parts and only listed the minifigures to sell? On some sets I'm okay with having more than one of a character (Troopers, Soldiers, Knights, etcetera), but some have very unique ones (Mace Windu, Yoda, so on) that at best I'm okay with two. For the most part, I buy a lot of sets just for the parts. Characters are great but, as I said, I don't always need that many of certain characters. At the least I was thinking that if I wer…

I placed an order last night and got lucky enough to take advantage of a system glitch that provided me with free shipping. I talked with LEGO Shop at Home today to see why I could not order more with free shipping and she told me that the system thought I was ordering from a store. Lucky me! The main reason for this post is that she told me free shipping starts on the 9th, right after double VIP ends.

  24. I was in Barnes and Noble today to look at their inventory after somebody mentioned they hold on to older sets longer and I was amazed at the amount of older sets they had in stock. Granted, all of it was garbage from an investment standpoint. They had the following from Pharaoh's Quest 9 boxes of Scorpion Pyramid (7327) 4 boxes of Rise of the Sphinx (7326) And they had a lot of Atlantis stuff 3 boxes of City of Atlantis (7985) 2 boxes of Guardian of the Deep (8058) And some stuff from Alien Conquest which is more common 7 boxes of Alien Mothership (7065) 11 boxes of UFO Abduction (7052) All of it was still retail. The thing that really s…

Not sure if this applicable to anyone here, but I was just now eating Oreos (Reduced Fat, unfortunately!) and reading the Chicago Tribune. Front page article says that the state of Illinois is thinking about charging sales tax on online businesses. Now this may not affect very many of us, because most of us didn't have $1 million or more of sales last year. Never the less, what ticks me off the most is that the state governors are claiming that they "[are] not talking about imposing a new tax. Not at all." Lordy, sales tax was around before the internet, so since it wasn't included in the initial bill/law, then it of course is a new tax! Isn't that the reason why we sell …
