Some of the newer sets coming from Amazon have the 2D bar codes on the box. May be dangerous to resell them on Amazon?

Just noticed it as well. Check your sets from Amazon. Look for what looks like a QR code above the sku/UPC box.

is this on all sets or just expensive ones?

This is a sub 50 dollar set..but I don't think it'll matter as all of them will eventually have it. The box comes with it printed on from the manufacturer....not a sticker. I have boxes from the shelf at Walmart that have it and some do not. Not sure how this will impact things on Amazon going forward, but you have to figure all discontinued sets don't have it so will they be allowed or not???..I have no flippin clue.

Try scan it with the amazon transparency app and see if it brings up info (it is the app with the blue t by amazon mobile). If so then that set is enrolled in the transparency program. If you have that set without the code (which is a unique code on each unit) then amazon will not accept it at the fulfillment center after a grace period. If it is the transparency code then it will mean those sets may not be allowed to be resold on amazon by unauthorized resellers as each code is unique and amazon has in its database where that code originated. If the app brings up nothing scan it with your phone camera it may be a generic we code taking you to lego’s website in which case it is harmless.

The pic here is similar to it...but there is no T or anything that says transparency on the product. Just 3 sets of numbers next to it. I scanned it with the Transparency app. And it says.....drumroll.......

"We haven't found anything"

Could it be that the code is just not activated yet? Or nothing to see here...? SmartSelect_20181130-053839_Chrome.jpeg

Did you check to see if it is a regular QR code using your camera app on the phone? The transparency code won’t have the t on the product just the 2d code and serial number. Each code is unique per item not per sku like a upc is. It sounds to me what you are describing is a transparency code since it has the serial number.

if it is then things get tricky for unauthorized resellers like most in this forum will be for this brand. The ones that have been scanned by amazon already or the serial numbered entered (if fbm you have to enter the serial number before amazon will let you see and ship the order) then amazon will determine it as counterfeit if you try to use it again. Now for the really tricky part. Not all retailers are going to use the transparency program. I believe that would have to be something the brand has in writing with its distributors and authorized resellers. If the retailer does participate and scans the item in then again you won’t be able to fba or fbm this on amazon as the code has been used already (well u can list it as used but no used allowed for the toy category on amazon - will the collectible workaround exist forever for toys? It is amazon nobody knows). Why wouldn’t a retailer participate? Well  Bezos now gets valuable info on inventory numbers of competitors.

Now for the super tricky part. The brand can enroll in an option to only allow authorized resellers to sell on amazon. If so then amazon generates certain transparency codes and serial numbers for those resellers to use only. Even if a retailer does not participate and you try to fbm or fba the unscannef code it won’t match the list of authorized codes amazon has so you will have to cancel the fbm order and they will destroy the unit if it hits an fba FC.

There will be a grace period for sellers to sell through and purge all the non transparency code units. That period is determined by the brand. The program is a fool proof brand gating. But we will have to wait and see to verify if the codes are the transparency codes or just regular QR codes. Given that LEGO brand protection became active on amazon a few months ago and their customer service reps are responding to reviews and questions and it sounds like the serial is printed next to the code I am leaning toward transparency codes.

Pardon the ignorance, but cant you just bubble wrap/ cover it ?

Once the grace period is over then each unit received at fba for an asin that is now coded as full transparency gets scanned by amazon. If there is no code, the code is covered, or the code has already been used then amazon destroys the unit (aka amazon warehouse sells it as used). Once codes full transparency once an item sells fbm the seller cannot see the address or purchase shipping without entering the serial number. If the seller has no serial or the serial has been used already then you cannot ship and you have to cancel. Cancel enough orders on amazon and you get banned.

Will other brands follow suit? Yes the list is growing monthly. Will eBay adopt it? Honestly who knows they seem to copy everything amazon does a few years down the line.

So the next question is can you make an alternate listing on amazon to sell? Yes but that is against TOS and LEGO brand protection is now actively going after those but it may be an option if you have some burner accounts and don’t mind risking amazon confiscating your funds if busted.

Customers will like the program on heavily faked items so it may be a good thing for eBay resellers as long as eBay never jumps onboard with the program.

So Amazon notified all the sellers about this, and I just missed it, or what?

If it is the transparency code then amazon should message sellers on the listing at the end of the grace period telling them to recall their items or they will be destroyed. Sounds like this is just getting setup so only LEGO knows what inventory levels of uncoded items are and what the appropriate flushing periods should be for each sku and also what skus they enroll (I would guess all sets but who knows for other LEGO mercy that is not normally faked).

If Lego turns on the transparency program, any idea what happens with retired sets sold before the barcodes went into effect?

Only skus enrolled are effected (so current sets going forward). However a brand does have the option with amazon for blanket coverage on all Asins under the lego brand to require them to have the barcode for fba or serial for fbm. Only time will tell what lego decides to do and they can obviously change their choice when they want. Expect more brands to follow as they move their advertising budgets from google and Facebook to amazon they only want themselves or authorized resellers benefiting from headline ads etc. Just one more change to adapt to.

The only item I've seen it on at retail level is a toy and it does have the T on the product.

I have some late 2018 early 2019 LEGO sets that aren't out yet and none of them have any transparency codes yet

That's just LEGO's new version of the date code. Used to be embossed into the box - now they print it. Have seen this on more sets. Seal code now has day of the week in it as well.

Nothing to see here, please move along ....

Yep that 2d code looks alot smaller than the other ones so far being used in the transparency program.
