General Buying & Selling

Overall discussion on the buying and selling of LEGO

  1. Started by cvail8,

So I was out today making my retail rounds, when I wandered into the Wally World clearance section... Lo and behold, there she was, a lonely Queen Anne's Revenge just waiting for me to find her. And only $79 too! Just goes to show, the best deals are found by getting out and hitting the streets!

What database program do you use to track your inventory? Have you found any that can use/scan the UPC codes to automatically insert data?

  4. USPS prices increased today so I thought it may be useful for members to share how they are handling it with regard to selling on ebay. The biggest one for those parting out sets or selling from bulk lots will be first class package increasing from $1.69 to $1.93. I offered free shipping until I got my feedback to a respectable level, then moved to charging for shipping. Will you continue to offer free shipping? Or will you move to charging buyers for shipping charges? Please don't turn this thread into another USPS bashfest, it's not very useful and I think we have enough of them.

Since i started selling Lego sets some years ago it always makes me feel kind of uncomfortable when i meet a buyer in person to hand over the Lego and he/she asks me "..and why are you selling this set/your collection?" or "Why don´t you need this set anymore?". It seems to me that about 9 out of 10 buyers asking me that question over and over again. I mean, they surely see that i´m selling more and just new sets when they´re looking at my account, and then we meet and they innocently/ironically ask me why i´m selling the set. Like they don´t have the balls to ask me if i´m just selling to make money with it or are they some kind of jealous? Any similar experien…

I made a point to be at my local Kmart this morning when they opened with the hopes that their 50% off clearance sale would be starting since their last promo ended yesterday. No dice. What they have going on now is 10% off the clearance price and then then you get 30% back in points. Not terrible, but not as juicy as the 50% off sales we all know and love. This new promo runs through 8/24, so I will be back early next Sunday morning to see if they finally go to 50%. They ran the 50% sale over Memorial Day as well as the 4th of July, so the closer we get to Labor Day is when they will probably run it. My kmart is less than a mile from my house, so i have no problem checki…

Here is a great tool for cleaning and polishing Lego bricks and models... http://www.ebay.com/itm/Lego-DUSTER-KIT-Star-Wars-10188-10195-10198-10212-10215-/280608095278?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item41558bbc2e#ht_20253wt_1274

  8. Debating on whether or not to register as an LLC. Looking for pro's and con's from those of you who have done it, or those of you who have decided not to do it. Not sure if there is a thresh-hold of sales volume or other things to consider when making the decision. I know LEGO isn't exactly an item that you have a ton of liability selling, but thinking that maybe it would make taxes and debt's easier to control and track.

  9. Greetings! When using an auction-style listing on eBay should I make the starting price the shipping price plus one dollar and put free shipping or start the auction at ($$$) and state the shipping price. Any advice would be wonderful. Edward

  10. Primarily out of curiosity I wanted to start a thread to find out how competitive the local secondhand market is in some of the areas that you guys patrol. A few of you have probably heard me whine a bit about my area (Austin TX) being a pain in the butt and it truly is. Since I've started using Craigslist I've noticed that if anything lego finds its way on there at an even remotely good price, its gone within a few hours, and almost every time I've gone to pickup or view sets or lots, I've been told by the owner that someone else either inquired immediately after me, or attempted to buy everything they had in one fell swoop, leading me to believe there's some big f…

Hey folks, scanned the forums and didn't exactly find what I was looking for, so... I'm going to be selling a few sets and wanted to get a sense of what the best option is. I've used eBay for a loooong time with no issues and like it except for the $$ cut eBay takes. On some of the higher ticket items I'll be selling, that percentage comes up to quite a bit. Is local Craigslist or another online option a better choice for selling? Thanks for your time.

Hey all, this may seem like a dumb question but I can't seem to verify the answer myself. I've got some old 1990s sets from childhood aim looking to flip to make some capital for new stuff. Some are old poly bags and small sets showing very low resale values ($10-12 usd). What I can't see on the Completed Listings link (through BPs price guide) is shipping costs. I'm unclear on whether the sold prices are including what the buyer paid in shipping, or if that's always extra and not reported? If a set goes for $10 total and shipping costs $7, it's hardly worth the time to even list em. If shipping is always extra however, that's $10 profit (seeing as a kid my buy in was $0)…

  16. So I recently purchased a large set (42055 - Bucket Wheel Excavator) from Target clearance section. Came home and clearly the box had been opened so I needed to inventory. Double checked the quantities of numbered bags and accounted for everything, all numbered bags, instructions, motorized parts. Everything was sealed except for the motor / switch board piece and ONE numbered bag. The numbered bag that was opened has a slight cut up at the top so there were a few loose pieces in the box that had fallen out of the bag. I highly doubt I had found them all...and I'm sure there is ONE missing or something. So question is, how do I sell this... will all the bags sea…

I picked up a lot the other day with a bunch of older western/pirates/forestmen stuff and it came with a load of extra instructions on MINT condition. They look right out of the box. Is there a market for old instructions and if so where would you recommend selling them? Also got a bunch of extra printed/ modified baseplates as well. Just a heads up. Barnes & Noble sent out 20% off one item coupons to all those with a membership this morning. They are good through the 14th. Stack those on top of any sales + 10% membership discount and you can get a pretty decent discount.

  21. Is it best to buy bulk mailers and put two stamps on each? Any tips are appreciated.

  22. Well somehow, I was able to pick up Arkham Asylum for $37 shipped. The box is beat up and has a huge slash through the middle that happened to go through the first page of book 1 of the instructions. As far as my question goes, several of the bags are still sealed and the rest are loose in the box. Do I open the sealed packages and find out what/if I am missing any pieces? The stickers are unused too. Thoughts?

Bought this set Ninjago temple of light for $20 each. Should I sell now ( judging from ebay, will make double per set) or wait ?

Greetings: I was reading the thread a few weeks ago with the rainbow 10179 and the reference and link to ebay for the custom black version. I know it's time consuming to go this route for 10179 or other big builds such as Taj Mahal, but what's the feeling typically on the money making side of this venture? I only really see the custom 10179 and there was money made on that one. My apologies if this is a thread already somewhere else. I looked for it but didn't find anything. Thanks as always!

  25. I recently posted a set on bricklink for $95 and it sold a couple days later. (cheapest on BL) The user is from Canada (I'm in the US) and send a message asking if they can pay by paypal and if I will send it as a gift...I responded and said yes you can definitely pay with paypal, but I would not send it as a gift as I'm selling it (I understand customs taxes probably aren't cheap in canada) However, the user has 0 feedback. I am looking up shipping rates to canada for this large set and it's around $38, and tracking is not available for this feature. The user created an account feb 23, so it's their first 2 weeks apparently. I dont know....should I go ahead and sel…
