That was SSD for me, so I ended up trading last year 1 HH and 1 Arkham for 1 SSD. Still think in the long run that will largely be a wash, but if HH gets to $1000 I might regret it!

Honestly, for me, I have that same regret.  I had a chance at the end of November to buy HHs and SSDs from Legoland California with a last minute delivery.  I went with 2 SSDs and 1 HH, but part of me regrets that I didn't do it the opposite way.  Time will tell.

Out of curiosity, is there many members here who have a high stock of HH or any high value sets, and are on one or several mortgage(s)?

There are a number of us who have larger amounts of exclusives.  >20 and 30 of each exclusives, some have far more.  Having a mortgage has nothing to do with anything.  Positive cash flow is what matters.

Your answer is quite interesting for the things to come..!

A good general rule is to sell the sets that aren't appreciating rather than focusing on taking profits.  This does not apply to QFLL situations, of course (better to have sold RI for $100 than hold 'till now and sell at $20), but HH is firmly retired and I think we've got a pretty good feel for the available inventory.  It is also, as Jaisonline writes, a unique set that is not likely to be reproduced, well, ever.  The new Monster CMF figures can only help.  They let people flesh out their Halloween style lego displays with additional creeps, and CMF list price is so high now that even near duplicates don't really compete much with the HH crew.

As an aside, Chinese culture very much frowns on depictions of graveyards, ghouls, and the undead in general.  This may have the happy side effect of dissuading Chinese counterfeiting of 'monster' lego sets and figures (for what it's worth, I have not seen any for sale thus far).

Very true. I live on the 4th floor in a very Chinese influenced town… they call it 3a because the word for 4 sounds like the word for death. The apartment sat empty for months before we moved in… I doubt they will be duplicating these monsters.

So what i dont get with this set (and quite a few others actually) is how hard it is to get a "used" one.  Just would have thought there must be some stock out there from people who have built this but now want to move onto something else so willing to sell their old one.

Just seems pretty sparse.  Basically i just want one of these for the personal collection and if i could get a used one there'd be no second guessing myself about whether to break the seal or not :)

I built both TH and HH last fall... I've toyed with the idea of selling my used TH, but never the HH. It's just too cool.

this is a set you can save for halloween each year and rebuild it with the kids.... after pumpkin carving of course.

This is a set one would find most difficult to part with in my opinion. You would have to pry it from my cold dead hands ....and I don't mean that figuratively.

I completely agree, I sold mine before I could open them. I always had the idea I would keep one for myself, but having them sealed made it so much easier for me to part with. Actually, every set I open I keep and find hard to sell later. Even Home One lol

Thanks guys exactly what I didn't want to hear! Sounds like even if I did find a used but clean one the price would prob be very close to a new one. Given its popularity would love Lego to do an updated haunted mansion version. Maybe I'm kidding myself and this one will continue to appreciate. Much as I do like it its now all about what it's worth to me and I just can come to part with the asking price on this one.

I don't think there's any monetary value that can be assigned to the fact you own a Lego set where you can recreate possibly one of the greatest delivered lines in movie history. "Admiral, enemy fighters in sector 7G"......."its a trap!"

This is the set that will do well because it is a great set.  We can talk about everything else: limited shelf life, EOL dates, doing the dance, being hoarded.  With this set it doesn't much matter.  It is simply a great set, which is why very few want to part with it used as well.  I have built it three times.  Would be four this Halloween but I haven't had the chance to tear it down yet, so probably will just keep it up.

True.

Personally I would even have alot of problems letting go of my MISB's! Even for nice profits.
