I think it will be a pretty straightforward set to bricklink. I think a set with a lot of rare pieces that can be subbed would be more interesting. If your going to bricklink one anyways you should document it. If you find ways to save a substantial amount over a used set I would love to read about it. I just don't see it happening. I was just doing a preliminary cost analysis. Swapping the brown hoses for grey and the dark blue parts for light blue drops the price by about $25, I had to substitute one dark blue piece for a similar piece in regular blue. I haven't gone through everything. I'm going to be looking to see what I have on hand first to see how much it might cost for me to build one. I'd also like to put a little work into making a completely color shifted version. I'll have to see which color I have the most matching parts of.
