General Buying & Selling

Overall discussion on the buying and selling of LEGO

  1. Started by queenbean84,

Do you usually find good deals at the lego stores? The one closest to me is about an hour and a half away and I am wondering if if it is worth it to make the trip.

  2. We all have a strategy when it comes it selling NIB sets vs. selling the minifigs and "vehicles" separately. We probably do a mix of both. - When do you feel it is a good time to move a slow selling NIB set and start selling the minifigs and other items within that set separately? - Does your strategy incorporate minimum starting retail price points on sets you decide to 'part out'? - Do you only do this on high priced sets (and do you even mess with lower priced sets)? - Does your strategy take into account maintaining your TRS status regarding # of sales in a 12-month period? - What about parting out sets early in their life and stocking up on NIB sets 'befo…

I need to sell to fund some of my next purchases but I am wondering which of my sets can I sell in order not to go in the future smashing my head against a wall. The candidates I have in mind are: 41999 - I have 2 units, would sell one. 10210 - Only one unit. Kinda interested in keeping it. 10193 - Only one unit. Not too interested. 4842 - Only one unit. Do not take this away from my hands please. I know that 10193 is in a different ballpark as figures go, but it'd be nice to have some dough to fund my addiction future investments, which will be determined by what I sell. Thoughts?

Next week I'll be visiting my sister in Denver. My dad mentioned that there is a Lego kiosk at the Cherry Creek mall. He said they have some discontinued sets, but that the prices were high. I haven't been there yet myself to check it out. Has anyone seen this kiosk? Do they have anything worth looking at?

Hey guys, I've seen this topic come up here and there. I'm thinking about investing in a Taj Mahal just for the CAGR (ROI beats my TFSA). However, it seems like an easy target for re-sealing. How would one be able to verify they're actually receiving a legit brand new sealed set? Been thinking, 1) Are the stickers always straight (parallel to the edge of the box)? Or in some cases the box is so heavy they go at an angle? Or get stretched? 2) Would applying a bit of pressure to it to check it's secure be a good test? 3) Moving it around, or pushing on it to check the sound? Thought about bringing a Tower Bridge to compare? 4) Some sort of light check? X-ray would be n…

I don't know how I missed this, but the new Dimentional Weight pricing is going to hurt when selling any of the larger sets. Just wanted to point out the change so you guys are prepared. I have a relative who's been helping me out with buying lego. He works for a big box store but can't tell you which one. He basically lets me use his employee discount of 15%. He's about to quit and asks if there's anything I want to load up on. With this said, do I get the most of my money by buying exclusives (modulars, Simpsons etc) at 15% off or do I use my funds elsewhere buying up supposed EOL sets at full price? (GE, SSD etc). The "eol" exclusives are oos at the store he works for. Opinions are most welcome. Cliff notes: exclusive with discount vs eol at retail, where to tie up funds?

Most of my interest is in the hard to find sets (Technic Porsche, Ghostbuster's Firehouse, Volkswagen T1, etc), but I have a really hard time finding these on sale. Is this normal? Do these sets ever go on sale like the others? I find that even at EOL they still aren't often marked down. Am I missing the deals, or do they not occur?

A few years ago I got me some LOTR sets from Argos in the UK. When I collected a couple had, in my opinion, been tampered with (the man who served me said that sometime people want to look in the box!). Of the two I ended up getting I've just gone to get one out to photo and have noticed the security seals at all corners have 'slipped', i.e you can see where the original glue was. The most one has moved is about 2mm longways, the others are less than 1mm. One has moved a little sideways as well, just noticeable but still 1mm or less. So....... We're these tampered with like the others were or is this something that happens over time, I can't notice on any other sets …

  10. Mailing off my first sale on eBay today. Should I insure it? The item is worth $200. The address is confirmed and I'll get tracking number of course. I'm new to this so am wondering what people think about insuring the items they sell on eBay if they are higher dollar amounts... I've read some interesting posts on how to save costs with an eBay business. Curious to know if people choose to save costs by not insuring or consider it a necessity. Thanks for your input!

I am thinking of buying Vampyre Castle at $96. It would save me almost $7 in taxes plus free shipping. I just don't want to have to deal with boxes again that are dented, rubbed edges, etc., as I want to hold on to this set for investment in the future. I had to return one large set to Lego that was dented, ordered 3 sets from TRU and am waiting for the store to get in some more sets so I can exchange one set that was bad. None of these were because of damage in shipment - just damage I assume in the warehouse. We do not live near a Lego store where you could pick out a box that was in mint condition.

  15. Would be nice if it did. And have an app to go with it just like EBay. Wish someone would come up with a LEGO-Bay. A site specific for LEGO sellers where we can purchase or set for auction with 5% or less fee instead of EBay 10%.

I hate when retail stores do this? Is there really an issue with people walking out with these big sets w/o paying for them. By now I am sure everyone knows that I want/need my boxes in pristine condition, and when they do this, it totally messes up the box. I have asked for discounts before (very very politely) because of the damage done by these security tags and more than one retailer has said no way!! Anyone else bothered by this?? I have even seen these on the SSD and DS at Lego stores.

So in 2011 I started hoarding Lego... not bulk sets, but I had an obsession with buying one of each. This year I realized how much I had been spending and had to cut it off and start cleaning it out. I had no idea how much the stuff was going to rise in value and I started with the most valuable sets and cleared out my 50 per month on eBay without having to pay any listing fees. I got tired of being that chick who had two full rooms in her house loaded with bags of Lego sets. I've never hoarded anything else, but for some reason I started buying Lego sets. I was able to go cold turkey thankfully starting January 1, 2017, and just want to clear them out. So now I sit …

I always thought that "drop shipping" was a derogatory term but I don't think it is really. I guess it is in the way we use it on this website but I was looking at at a golf related item on Ebay and the listing clearly stated that the item would be drop shipped. Just something I found interesting, not sure of its educational value though lol

  21. Started by Legodog,

I received a set I purchased off of eBay the other day and it is obvious that it was drop shipped. It came directly from Lego and had my address information in the shipping area while in the billing area it had someone elses name and address which was not the seller I bought it from. The price on the receipt was way over what I paid for the item. Obviously I am going to report the person to eBay but what harm could it do to me? I would assume that if this happens multiple times maybe Lego will stop shipping to my address? Anyone had any experience with this or any thoughts?

Hey all, this may seem like a dumb question but I can't seem to verify the answer myself. I've got some old 1990s sets from childhood aim looking to flip to make some capital for new stuff. Some are old poly bags and small sets showing very low resale values ($10-12 usd). What I can't see on the Completed Listings link (through BPs price guide) is shipping costs. I'm unclear on whether the sold prices are including what the buyer paid in shipping, or if that's always extra and not reported? If a set goes for $10 total and shipping costs $7, it's hardly worth the time to even list em. If shipping is always extra however, that's $10 profit (seeing as a kid my buy in was $0)…

Hi, I am relatively new to Lego re-selling. Over about a decade I have amassed a collection of mini figures which I intend to sell for a decent price. If it works so, the money I receive will be re-invested into Lego which I can once again sell and expand my inventory. Do you recommend, for a beginner, I begin an e-store or go straight to auction sites? I live in New Zealand by the way. Thanks so much to anyone who replies.
