  2. Looking at the price development history of Star Wars UCS sets I notice that they invariably really only start to increase in value some two years after official retirement. Since 10242 Red Five only retired one year ago it's simply just way too early to expect solid gains on it. Yes, initially after official retirement there was a big bump in price caused by resellers buying off each other and boosting the demand and therefore the market-price of this set. After that demand wound down the prices dropped as well. But ... calling R5 a dud/turd because of that is just plainly ridiculous. Even the 10227 B-Wing, which was massively written off by investors as a dud/turd while it was available at LEGO Shop at Home and sold at huge discounts, is now doing just fine. Even 2nd-hand used it sells for no less than €275 in Europe and new prices are at €300-€400 ... Give the Red5 time. It will do well for those who have patience. With UCS sets it's either you QFLL them right after the post-EOL bump for a quick cash-out, or you hold on to them for 3+ years.

  6. Bought this used. Took it apart to clean and rebuilt it. Tedious task with mainly small pieces. Hard to believe this set has over 2000 pieces.

  15. I often wonder why this forum has "Investment Guide" in the title and not "Quick Flipping Quide". I only have 1 of these, and brought it to sell 3-4 years down the road (unless remake signs appear), not 12 months after retirement. This and the EV thread have me screaming:

  18. The bad news - I just woke up. The good news - these sets will be cleared out of TRU's inventory now rather than sitting on their shelves at 15% above RRP for two years.

  34. The bricklink data for this set is very similar to Sandcrawler, so I don't know what you guys are talking about when you say "overstocked" and "no demand". Ewok Village: supply / demand => 390/52 = 7.5 average sell price / RRP => 224.48€ / 249.99€ = 0.897 Sandcrawler: supply / demand => 334/53 = 6.3 average sell price / RRP => 275.21€ / 299.99€ = 0.917 Ewok Village is a very nice set. I think it'll do just fine.

  35. I do this too. First thing I learned when I came to the US: When your children get presents without a gift receipt, they are "regifted" items. I had never heard of the concept before. Now I research which stores sell those items and just return them there for store credit. Other unwanted presents with gift receipt get returned too. My kids then get the value of the gift receipts in money on their bank accounts (or pick a big present from the combined sum), and I get to keep the gift cards.

  36. The official trailer was released. Looks good. One of my favorite moments was when Pete's pal Ned dropped a 10188 (or is it a 75059. Who knows anymore. I can't tell by looking for the extra cheese slope.) I'm sure we'll be hearing about Lego sets soon enough.

  47. Got to build the new Lego Batman Movie Batmobile and Mr. Freeze sets. What a difference... Batmobile set Mr. Freeze set The Batmobile is clearly a better set and not just because it has more bricks. The articulation on the wheels, while not critically important, allows the Batmobile to sit higher or lower (think monster truck vs. dragster) depending on your preference, and can also swing out for "flight-mode". The vehicle itself is really slick, and I love how all of Batman's vehicles have their names "stenciled" on the side. The Batman and Robin figs are great, while the twins are just okay and Manbat is a repeat, although I don't believe the original had the back printing this one does. This Manbat also has two faces. That said, the other set was disappointing. Mr. Freeze, the star of the set, is downright pitiful. While the Mr. Freeze minifigure is excellent, the mech-suit looks like an anorexic mixel. In the past, Lego has given us such great mechs that I've come to expect excellence but this one misses the mark. I even like the little scene and how it combines with two others, but the mech just kills the set. The "ice encasing bricks" have been done before, but the designer chose to use gray bricks at the base inexplicably. Disappointing...
