Who flips stuff just build it all

I have not received any of mine yet from WalMart or Amazon. They are all expected by tomorrow evening. Once they arrive I will weigh the amount of packing material included, measure each crease to the nearest millimeter, inspect the seals for fingerprints, and run a black light over every side of each box looking for traces of rat urine and / or feces from being stored for months on end in a dirty warehouse. Once I collect all of this data I will not report any of it here because I doubt anybody cares. Carry on...

Box Queens, the lot of ya. I've said it before, this returning behavior will only hurt this 'thing' we do. If not now then eventually...

This thread's starting to remind me of the Tumber thread while it was labeled 'retiring soon'. Minus the Target refrigerator boxes and, you know, the retirement.

With the discounts we've gotten on these, it would take a lot of damage for me to return these. Besides, I prefer customers that wanna build the sets and not sit and stare at the boxes...

I'm a bigger LEGO fan than I am a Star Wars fan so most of my build have been in the Creator line. However the Star Wars UCS line does have some of the largest and most interesting builds so I knew eventually I would get there. Since I came out of my dark ages a year and a half ago, I've always thought the UCS Imperial Shuttle 10212 was one of the most accurate and interesting looking Star Wars models and wanted to get one. To that end, for the past 3 months I've been slowly bricklinking 10212, 10182, and 10189. All original parts and color in new condition except where it didn't make sense (e.g. stud hole vs no stud hole). All new condition except, again, where it didn't make sense due to price or availability. I can give more specifics if anyone is interested but in short I sourced all three for about $1,400 plus ~$40,000 in unpaid time . This week in the evenings I built 10212... In the end I was just as impressed as I thought I would be. Really enjoyed the build and the final result!

Looks great. My opinion is changing on this. The Stormtroopers in the water was a fantastic scene.

Does box condition really matter if you are getting an item which you would not normally be able to get at such deep discounts? There is no guarantee that amazon will send a replacement, or even if they do the "new" item will be not damaged. I agree you do get more if item is MISB, but most buyers do not care if item is NIB and some scratches / marks. I found that going from MISB to NIB there is approximately a <5% price difference. Even if Box seals are broken but lego bags sealed, you would only lose approximately 10% max price difference compared to MISB. That's just my opinion.

I take well documented pictures of shelfwear so my customers know exactly what they are getting. I don't disguise myself as an average buyer to a major retailer and then complain when a kit box shows up with minor wear. I take what the retailer sends me since I already got a good deal, which is why I purchased from them anyway. You do as you like with your persnickety top tier customers.

This really has nothing to do with TH, but it does relate to the current discussion. I REALLLLLLLLLY with there would be a shift in this industry to opened, sealed bags being the standard for buying/selling LEGO. Even if I purchase something at the LEGO store, I always have this part of me that hates not knowing the contents of a sealed box. I wish buyers would stop worrying about the seals on the outside of the box and move to worrying if the bags are sealed. This would allow us 3rd party sellers to pop the seals and verify contents. I've actually asked buyers if they were collectors or if it was a gift for a child. They've all always said gift, so I've followed up with asking if they'd care to pop the seals and verify contents before I left. I would give someone a discount, albeit small, if a buyer were to allow me to pop the seals. That's how much my reputation means to me. It would only take one jacka$$ to return a box filled with garbage and me buy then sell it to ruin years of effort in building my rep.

To me, that is the most intriguing looking STAR WARS ad ever created. It is so wacked, it's super cool.

Trust me, as a collector that has every major LEGO set from a SDCC or convention, the possibility that the same set will be released later in the year will drastically affect the value of these SDCC sets. I am glad to see it too. Maybe LEGO is realizing that many of these sets and minifigures given away/sold at these events are being resold immediately by people who have never built a set. I know some here will disagree with me because they are the ones lucky enough to attend these events, but most of us cannot. I am tired of spending $200.00 on a $20.00 set.

But having 10,000 rabid fans who are young and entrenched in Internet culture (also maybe poor if my sister and her friends are representative of AT fans) does not mean any of us will make money on this. Dr. Who has a global following spanning multiple generations. TBBT is watched by tens of millions of people in the US, not counting all the syndication views. BTTF is 30+ year property with multi-generational appeal. AT has a niche following spanning 4-30 year olds. Perhaps a short run will make this profitable in 5 years when a few of the younger fans start making money, but it still doesn't look like a $50 set so buy-in would have to be very low to be worth holding. I'm not here to knock the set itself, but how many people would click yes on any set with their favorite IP in Lego? As an investment opportunity I can't see touching this thing anytime soon.

I think it’s increasingly likely that we’ll be saying that about the new large exclusive releases going forward. For me 10253: Big Ben falls into that category as well, I expect to be retired before it is.

I couldn't care less about the box. If you want to disparage someone, make snarky comments to my customers. As long as THEY care, I must as well.

It's rare, but, it is that one shot that blows a perfect feedback record. Negatives are hard to bury if you're not moving a lot of volume. Here's one I caught before it made it into a buyer's hands recently. Just happened to notice it seemed a little off balance and didn't "clink" right in the box. Weight was within 5% of another same set and the seals were intact but maybe a little pulled. Popped them to be sure after shaking it around more and got quite the surprise. This is the third or fourth "contents replaced" "new" set I've run across this year. The worse part is you can never outright blame the seller (be it Walmart or an individual on BrickLink, eBay, etc) because who knows who actually did it. The worst part is when they get by and you sell them. ...Or did one get by? Maybe the buyer is trying to screw you the seller. Who knows.

This actually benefits the established LEGO re-sellers who have positive feedback and a long track record of high quality.

About a year ago I brick-linked Green Grocer. To buy all the required sand green bricks in new condition would have cost me close to $400 I believe (it could have been more, I just don't remember). I ended up making some pieces swaps that I could stylistically live with in order to control costs, but still spent a fair amount. I remember seeing a listing on eBay at the time from one of the Chinese brick companies. It was a package deal that included every sand-green brick required to build your own Green Grocer model for $54 BIN. I'm not going to lie, it was tempting. In the end, self-respect, personal pride, and concerns over fit/color-match/quality-control kept me from making the purchase. If it gets to the point where knock-off bricks rival LEGO in fit, color, texture and appearance, then buyers might not want to pay $4 per brick for (50) Sand Green 1x8s.

This is Amazon not eBay but I didn't see anything else close. I thought this was cute. Amazon wants me to "Buy it again." Well, sure I will, if you charge me the prices I paid last time 'cause I don't need them for the prices listed now...

That tower needs a slight mod to allow the bug to drive through.

The only reason I built by color instead of bags, was because I bought a bulk lot that had about 75% of the GE in it. It was partially built, along with a ton of loose pieces. So I didn't have an option to build by bags. (That's my preferred way to build as well). TH, last fall, was a bit cheaper to piece together from BL than it is now. I want to say there are a few choice pieces (including the instructions) that have shot up in price, as used and new set supply have dwindled. I know I didn't pay nearly as much as if I would have tried to put it together now.

Here's a report from Brickset on the upcoming Friends Amusement Park sub-theme, which could very easily be integrated into a Fairground Theme: I'm sure the color will be a turnoff to some, but I'm pretty excited about the prospects of all of these sets.
