  1. I thought this would be a fun topic to start. Mods, if you feel differently then please feel free to delete it. We have all heard or been a part of the same story. You spent a bunch of money on some "toys", with the intention of reselling them in the future for more than what you paid for them. Meanwhile, your spouse was ready to have you committed to the looney bin, until you bought them this with some of your profits. I'll start... We have had a pool since we bought our home twelve years ago. Wisconsin winters can be a bit harsh, and this past winter Mother Nature decided that it was time for our old pool to go. She had her way with it, and reduced it to a pile of scrap. Our kids, who are nine and eight, were pretty upset about it, and my wife didn't feel like dipping into savings to buy a new one, so the Lego fund came to the rescue. We just had it installed three weeks ago, fully funded from Lego profit. Now my wife doesn't give me the old fish eye when she comes home and finds several packages on the doorstep. Does anyone else have any fun stories to share?

  5. Was fortunate to have the day off work today so I built the Ferris Wheel. Enjoyed the build, was repetitive but knowing that going into it made it OK and learned some new techniques which were cool. In real life the colors are more vibrant - especially the trans-clear yellow and orange pieces - and I am not bothered by the color scheme seeing it in real life. Took about 4.5-5 hours to put together and really pleased overall.

  6. Has anyone seen this? Seems that Lego produced a bantha in one of their videos. Could a potential bantha be in a set during the 2016 winter wave? Seems like this is a sneak peak of a big possibility. http://www.groovebricks.com/lego-star-wars-bantha-coming-soon/

  7. Most of my profits have gone back into legos. the one exception was the Research Laboratory bonanza. i was one of the lucky ones to have scored a bunch and sell when they were hitting $100 on amazon. Helped pay for half of my Walking Dead pinball machine.

  10. After setting up my Kwik-E-Mart and Simpsons house for display I decided I wanted to do something to display the 2 series of Simpsons CMF alongside them. This kind of design could be used for any set of CMF really as the 16 figs display on each section in front of the poly bag. Here's some shots: The 2 sections are hinged together and can be separated to display on different angles like this: Each figure sits on a 1x2 plate, so they stay put nicely. Nothing too difficult in the build, I stuffed around with different ways for attaching the CMF bag backgrounds and in the end decided to simply have the 4 edges jammed between 1 stud depth bricks. It's pretty tight so holds them nicely without glue or tape. A fun little project. Took a lot more bricks than I thought and I pretty much ran out and had to scrape by with smaller bricks for the last bits of the wall.

  11. My wife is still cool with it all, but most of the time I think she still hears "blah blah blah....blah blah...make money...blah" I think this is basically after I have been slowly taking over her little work out area in the basement with boxes

  14. I sold the dinged up ones from Target delayed BF delivery. I still have a dozen. I'm sure this set will do well long term but between Jokerland, Arkham, the better earlier Batcave and whatever else comes out next year when the movie comes out, there is a lot of competition for the Batman aftermarket LEGO $. Still, it's the freakin' batcave. nuf said. done. etc.

  15. These days, anything is possible. I think we're early on EV, though, at least until it goes limit 2 at LEGO Shop at Home. I have only one, bought at 20% off, and will probably pass on the set at MSRP. It's just a lousy deal, and I'm not convinced that AFOL's love ewoks. They do love jawas, though, so SC is on my list. If nothing else, I can motorize one of them with power functions and post youtube videos of my cats riding around on it. Instant fame and riches...

  16. Stopped by TRU and they stocked a few MTT. Carried one up to the counter and asked if they were honoring digital coupons yet? I mentioned the stores appear to be all over the place with the policy. She said no, no pictures either, only existing ones on their website. I showed her the 25/20 bar code, she frowned, said no, reached into her pocket and gave me a legit mailed version. Rang me up, scanned it, and then gave it back to me. $58.96 after 13% gift card.

  18. I bought my wife new blades for the tractor, so I think you're doing ok. Profits paid for a good part of a recent Disney vacation, property taxes, etc., so it's a nice supplemental income

  19. Awesome terry. Most awesome, indeed. Your post clearly shows that with patience, smart buying and some luck (the hard work is a given), Lego investing does pay off. i usually reinvest my Lego profits but finally able / willing to pull the trigger on a watch I've wanted for 10 years. Instead of dipping into the savings account, Lego came to the rescue. It was purchased pre-owned and was only 5 months old.

  20. I would ship it normally and cite ebay rules and defects against sellers who do not ship on time. They can arrange all sorts of different things with the carrier to have it held, delivered to a different address, or delayed.

  21. As long as Lego takes up space, my wife will hate it. She doesn't care 1 bit about the money earned from Lego. She would rather eat Ramen noodles and cans of chunk lite tuna fish (the bad kind) than Lobster, steak, oysters, etc... bought using Lego profits. At least the kids like it . She does love my sports ticket biz since inventory takes up only 1 cubic foot of space

  26. My wife will be staying home this Fall, leaving a 10+ year career of teaching. This was a difficult decision that we've postponed for a couple years while we pay down debt on credit cards and vehicles. One factor in the decision was the supplemental LEGO income. It won't match her salary, but she can now hang out with my 4yr old son, run the kids around, enjoy a longer summer, take a vacation during the school year, and just relax a little bit more while we raise 3 children. Her last paycheck is in August. A few months after that is when the holiday shopping season begins and I'll begin to sell some of our riper sets. I can't wait to sell my first SSD and drop that Paypal balance into our account. She still gets frustrated when new boxes arrive on the porch and empty boxes and shipping materials fill her office space downstairs. I can't blame her for that. We have boxes and shipping supplies everywhere! I try to keep it out of the way most of the time. She understands that most of it is necessary for us to achieve our financial goals, so she is pretty patient with me. Brickpicker has helped change our life...and now I can't wait for the holiday selling season to get here! Disclaimer: if you are new to Brickpicker, reselling, or LEGO investing please don't read this as a get-rich-quick success story. It is anything but that. There is more to the story than LEGO. In fact, LEGO is only part of the reason we are able to make this decision.

  27. Sold 2 Creative Towers for $100.49 each including shipping on amazon. Luckily one of the buyers is the next state over and is only costing $8 to ship. Paid $30 on black friday for them. Also sold some new Simpsons Minifigure Series 2 complete sets for $93 also on amazon. Paid $48 for each set. These weigh less than 13 oz so very cheap to ship First Class. Sold 3 Batcave's for $99.99 + $7 shipping on amazon. Paid $45. Ebay sales have dried up for now.

  30. Fair question, but everybodys guess on that is as good as yours. I think it really will depend on the sets (and the movies). We haven't seen either yet which makes answering your question pretty tough. Lucky for you we can all just wait 6 month and the sets will still be out ;-) (and we might be able to give more educated guesses). Right now I'd say if the sets are crappy I wouldn't invest. I expect them to be good though. Depending on how good they are I will invest in some. There are Clonewars sets that also have been good investments and OT sets that have performed poorly. OT Sets have the advantage that AFOL feel more attracted to them. But in new AFOL might prefer SW Rebels or Clone Wars or even Episode 7-9. As a rule of thumb: If the set sucks: Don't invest! If the set is awesome (and everybody here is going crazy about it...) invest! My personal guess is that Star Wars will stay a winner for quite some time and I'm still optimistic about the movies!

  32. I have major new respect for those of you who sell on ebay for your business (I am a collector mostly). I am selling a LEGO item on eBay just now - buyer purchase item and has just sent me an email requesting that I ship the item on a certain date 3 weeks from today so it will arrive for a special weekend in July. I am all for making the customer happy - I am the manager of a retail store - but this seems a little goofy to me. I can only begin to imagine some of the things you guys go thru. Anyway, much respect!

  33. Arguably, So far profits from parting out bulk lots have helped finance a trip to New Zealand and a new car. Have not yet sold many investment sets. But I am running 40% paper profit, unfortunately down from 50% 2 months ago due to a mid year price slump.

  37. All my profits either get re-invested or go towards sets or pieces for personal use. The investments are growing though, so the ability to cash out and use that money somewhere else is always there (though not simple to liquidate). My wife complains a bit as we never "see" any of the profits, that's ok though as I quickly distract her with something else to complain about

  39. Nice thread. A year ago I had a new patio poured out back and gave my wife a very nice diamond ring from Lego and "non-Lego" profit. It helped a lot with the complaining.

  40. Ah yes. Nothing like an unexpected financial backlash. I hit one of those back in Jan. Put a total freeze on the LEGO investments for 3 1/2 months. (I was really tempted to put in an equation for you Ciglione.) My wife sees and knows the profit possibilities. The only issue is that she expects me to make high margins all the time. "Why are you selling that less than msrp!" B/c she's gotten a taste of "what profits are possible" its almost like she's been spoiled and expects those same high margins all the time. There is a mix of reinvestment for me. Some money spent on sets goes back into checking after sales and others stay in paypal for future investments.

  44. Update on my LEGO Shop at Home situation. Instead of activating my last order on the 9th, they ended up activating both my 1st and 9th order. I never got a reason why both were cancelled in the first place. Of course when I called back today, they couldn't cancel the June 1st order. So both orders will be shipped. The CS is going to give me a prepaid label to send the first order back plus a gift card for my trouble. I also get to keep the freebies. Looks like a win win situation. My return label is for fedex. I guess I have to find my nearest fedex store. Was hoping I could just drop it off at the post office.

  45. While not many of us seem to have heard of it - it was easy to find the meaning of the term (which is pretty offensive). Oversensitive or not - it was a pretty stupid thing for LEGO to let slip by. Plus, the one who wrote it for them must have known what it meant.
