  1. Update: My wife just came home and told me she is buying my oldest a hamster for her birthday...and that she found a really nice dress for Easter that was "on sale." Oh well, at least I have Lego. I still claim it as a win.

  2. So my family made a trip to the Lego store for the last day of double points, and I had a little birthday money left to spend on something for the personal collection. I couldn't decide between the Simpsons House and Slave I. I didn't have enough for either, but my wife being nice and overlooking the extra cost. After much deliberation I decide on the Simpsons House since it's older and I'll have more time to buy Slave I sometime in the future. I'm at the register to purchase it and the check out guy and I are chatting about buying this set over the other. My wife chimes in - and says some something magical, "Oh heck, it's the last day for double points, why don't you just get them both." WHHHAAATTT???!!! It wasn't a trick, it wasn't a test of good husband decision making - she was honestly telling me to get both sets! This was on top of the fact that a week earlier she had secretly worked out a Bday gift surprise with my parents and her parents and got me the Death Star! So, the Death Star has literally been finished less than 24 hours and she rocks it out with giving me the go ahead on Simpsons and Slave I. Best week ever. Best wife ever.

  4. Just so you know, that won't work. You can't deduct the cost of an item until you sell the item...otherwise, our tax code would give every business a path to reducing their tax liability to $0 through the acquisition of debt-funded inventory.

  6. The big sets came already built. There are books for about 30 more smaller sets. Spongebob, **** Potter, Indy. Tons of minis. Going to be some work but I couldnt pass it up. Kid was 18 and going to college. Entering his dark age... maybe see him here in 10 years or so.

  10. To me, the Exo Suit is what a Lego "bubble" looks like: Plenty of hungry QFLL tried to cash in, Lego made more, all the investors/QFLLs said "Eff this. It's junk. I can't double my money immediately," and now piles sit and wait for a home. Since it A} isn't licensed (NASA, like the Rover), B} doesn't fit another current theme (outside of IDEAS), and C} didn't have an accompanying media frenzy (ala Research Institute), it's dying a slow death. I still love it. I have have one built for me and ten in a box waiting. They may never sell, but they are a tiny, tiny fraction of my investment portfolio. I'll hold on to them for future AFOLs to crawl from the dark ages and say, "Damn, I wish I was around when that thing was available at MSRP."

  14. I got some cases from michael's crafts, check there. They usually have 40-50% coupons floating around. I got 3 of them that were normally $50 and were on sale for $25. They hold 64 minifigures in each case. Edit: This is what I got: http://www.michaels.com/studio-decor-keepsake-display-case/10227067.html#start=47

  16. Sold a local Craigslist buy via an eBay auction. Large lot of Star Wars Minifigs and Kits. Paid $300 for this, auction closed at $493+shipping. I cleared about $150 for this sale, after fees.

  18. We keep re-investing every week. When you are in a strong growth phase the worst thing you can do is remove profits. Every $1 we keep in now will be worth many multiples of that in the medium term. Obviously when you are piggybacking on another company's success there is always the risk that things can go pear shaped quickly so we always monitor TLG policies and production. So far we see every indication they are being proactive to protect the secondary market which is good news for our projections. If they decide to do away with bans, limits and surprise retirements we will scale back our purchases for this product and maybe even take some profits

  19. With the shops not being restocked due to LEGO not being able to follow production to fulfill its own orders, I fear most if not all shops are out of 'good deal' PS.

  22. PD Call it a dream. A dream a little boy had. He grew up and wanted a warehouse full of Ewok Village's. Master Yoda kept them all at full MSRP. They dangled them over him and held them just out of reach. One time to a prior boy Yoda actually gave out lots of sets such as the UCS B Wing. Ever since then he has teased and poked and toyed but never given a Jedi Master worthy gift. The last few years other brothers, who lived across the pond got some great sets. He made sure that he loudly advertised it so that the boy saw he would not get anything. The boy felt jilted. His dad bought him lots of Lego so Master Yoda did not think he was worthy of gifts any more. At Christmas this year with everything at MSRP the Master started to wonder if he had spurned his padawan too much as the boy's dad bought Transformers, and other toys. Yoda had a warehouse of some things left over. He regretted his actions and decided to give the boy an extra large gift all while jilting the boy across the pond. Trek Ewok Village is Coming home. Then I wake up and realize I was in the land of Oz and things like this never happen any more.

  28. Well if you are just displaying minifigs you can try mounting them into photo frames, I got this idea off some YouTube video but I can't seem to find it now. The external frame can be bought off ikea. I was afraid of the frame falling on my little girl so I mounted it really low, plus it's at her eye level so she can check it out every now and then. :-) Sent from my iPhone using Brickpicker

  29. No, but I would be selective about what you get. There are winners and losers in every bunch and I think the first Avengers sets or the IM3 sets would have done much better if they retired sooner before the next movie wave came out (current Avengers with all the minifigure remakes). I don't know if there is much hope for MOS just because the movie was forgettable for a lot of people. I think GOTG could be a hit but then again there is another movie coming in 2017 so the sooner they retire the longer the window is open before a new wave brings the prices back down.

  30. My last Republic Gunship for 169 shipped. When these started going on clearance, I tried to find as many as I could but only ended up with 3. Wish I found more, however, I never thought they'd be up this high this soon!

  34. What is your gut feeling telling you? If I was in your place and I know the source is trustful and have a few already I would move along to the next opportunity. The modulars are safe choice, but massively hoarded so competition is very fierce, hence returns are small. Buying 20EUR over MSRP is already putting you in a bad position so you have to wait a long time to break even,

  37. If they make that mistake again I'd be surprised. It should have at a minimum been tied to a credit card or shipping address or something... Not just a cookie in your browser's cache. Who ever made that decision is probably regretting it now. I don't feel so bad about the shipping though. I didn't use the coupon that many times, but I think every order that was > 1 item came in separate boxes. I even had a single baseplate shipped in it's own box that was big enough to fit 50 of them. My guess is they've negotiated a pretty decent rate with FedEx that they just don't care. Oh well, I'm done my shopping. One last AT-AT and that's it for me!

  38. Let's all note that the CineplexHoliday code will expire on Tuesday at midnight! Making it generic and reusable indefinitely was probably a mistake, we might not see such great deals over so many sets in a long time. I feel a little bad about how much the shipping must have cost Toys R Us... All these tiny orders, a $100 off $400 code would have worked better!

  39. got the barnes and noble 20% off coupon to work by purchasing a piece of candy along with the lego. in this case i got another (the last on the shelf finally) fallingwater - #11 for me- my lucky number so that's enough. after the 10% off membership, 20% off coupon (which also counted toward chocolate), and a 15% off raise card, came out to $61.19 before tax. time for the um neighbor getting married down stairs to open a bn account.

  44. I've been rebuilding my 80s space sets for the first time in 25 years and displaying them around the house. Staring at all those blue (and other coloured) astronauts, it's tempting to turn them into easy cash but I'd sooner donate internal organs.

  45. Classic Space is awesome and timeless. Glad it is getting some love with Benny's Spaceship. There was something just so timeless about classic space. Yes the designs were simple and the minifigures were plain. But it is almost like they did just enough so that the imagination could do the rest. Take for example the most iconic set of the theme, the 497 Galaxy Explorer. Just the most impressive box art. Just some Lego men quietly working on a strange planet under an intense alien sun. While overhead the sleek Galaxy Explorer glides effortlessly towards an alien sun through the cold mute expanse of space. A universe of possibility and adventure await. This is why the theme has endured the decades and has such a cult status. Classic Space was the genesis that spawned the golden age of LEGO space. One of the best things was that it wasn't simple good guys Vs. bad guys like today. You had all these factions, each with their own drives and objectives. From the nomadic foragers of M-Tron to the galactic peacekeepers of Space Police to the quiet researchers of Ice Planet 2002. Each was unique. Some of the greats of space came out in this period. The 6941 Battrax, the 6990 Monorail (and its brother the Unitron Monorail base), the 6989 Mega Core Magnetizer, the 6988 Alpha Centauri Outpost. The list goes on and on! (BTW I just noticed the Blacktron guy in the background getting booted into a cell ) Sadly, in the late '90's. LEGO space went into a decline. While UFO, Roboforce and Insectoids were not bad by a long shot. They just seemed to lose something. I can't quite put my finger on it, but the sets just seemed to get too busy and lacked some intangible quality that the previous years had given us. Then in 1999 LEGO Star Wars appeared and put the final nails in the coffin of Space. Not that I am hating on Star Wars, the sets are great (until they went overboard with all the non-original trilogy stuff) and they saved LEGO from the chopping block but something dear was lost with LEGO space. Subsequent space themes have just been so forgettable. Mars mission tried admirably and Space Police III was just awful. Galaxy Squad has some awesome sets, several of which have earned places next to my Space sets. But again it just seems like the harder LEGO reach for the magic of Classic Space the more it slips away. Now this August we finally get a proper tribute to the proud lineage of Classic Space in the form of Benny's Spaceship. It is not perfect, but it does very well. And I have to say that the August release can't come soon enough. It also fills me with hope for the future of LEGO Space. /steps off the soapbox

  47. Best deal I ever did was while I was in highschool. I sent out an email to my entire upper school that I needed Legos for a school project that I was working on (I in fact did need gray parts). The school was a very prestigious prep school with oodles of rich people. I ended up getting several thousand dollars worth of Legos just given to me. A complete Sante Fe, the whole range of large technic sets, a Taj mahal... etc etc. Never ceases to amaze me how appealing to charity can net you a lot compared to buying it... For the record I built a killer project for class...I felt like I had to.
