  1. So my family made a trip to the Lego store for the last day of double points, and I had a little birthday money left to spend on something for the personal collection. I couldn't decide between the Simpsons House and Slave I. I didn't have enough for either, but my wife being nice and overlooking the extra cost. After much deliberation I decide on the Simpsons House since it's older and I'll have more time to buy Slave I sometime in the future. I'm at the register to purchase it and the check out guy and I are chatting about buying this set over the other. My wife chimes in - and says some something magical, "Oh heck, it's the last day for double points, why don't you just get them both." WHHHAAATTT???!!! It wasn't a trick, it wasn't a test of good husband decision making - she was honestly telling me to get both sets! This was on top of the fact that a week earlier she had secretly worked out a Bday gift surprise with my parents and her parents and got me the Death Star! So, the Death Star has literally been finished less than 24 hours and she rocks it out with giving me the go ahead on Simpsons and Slave I. Best week ever. Best wife ever.

  3. I have a pile of these from last years speculative EOL. Every time I look at that stash I say to myself "some day you will make me lots of money". I should probably being buying more because once it goes, it's gonna be a fun ride.

  5. I got a used LEGO movie creative ambush (70812) for $20 shipped, a used cloud cuckoo palace (70803) for $10 shipped, and a used melting room (70801) for $5 shipped from the same seller on eBay

  6. Finally pulled the trigger and picked up The Lonely Mountain at Meijer. Between the 25% off, an additional 10% off for mPerks and a $5.00 coupon that stacked, it came to $83. I have been lukewarm at best regarding this set, but at that price, I decided to roll the dice and see how it goes.

  7. And the same argument was used for Fire Brigade and many others. With the rising price of exclusives, this one is going to seem like a deal in hindsight IMO.

  8. For anyone following, this topic was originally the "How to build a modular house" with a very nicely detailed walkthrough I had found over at Eurobricks to share here because I felt it was a fantastic resource in aiding anyone who ever wanted to make their own. Well I was thinking lately and the short of it, I wanted to help bring some better usage for this thread therefore I modified it a tad allowing the inclusion of displaying all the different sorts of custom modular house projects one may find across the net in the same manner how the MOC Highlights topic is for all general designs and MOC Alternates is for alternate builds. That way you had a basic guide to start with well as a number of projects to help give some inspiration hence the title change. (You may have noticed the MOC Highlights topic has shrunk a little which is because I moved any modular house design from over there to here.) Please feel free to post anything fitting within the Cafe Corner standard (32x32), Market Street standard (16x32), or even the 'spite house' standard (8x32). You can still find the How To guide in the main post to peruse. To help kick off the update, here is a double whammy with two stables of delectable desserts in a Krispy Kreme beside a Baskin Robbins. >Baskin Robbins and Krispy Kreme by tehLEGOman

  11. Inspired after reading siddji's topic of Best Site for MOC Modular step by step creations?, I thought it would be a good idea to have a topic listing some great resources to not only help anyone wanting to design their own modular style houses but also inspire a few ideas as well. Anyway, I came across this simple guide from Eurobricks listing the basics of how to generally get started. Resources: Eurobricks Brickhamster

  12. Yeah, you are right that here growth is usually more gradual - see Sopwith Camel as a prime example. I guess the number of resellers is one controlling factor and maybe another is socio economic in that there are also less people with such disposable income willing to spend it on lego. It seems that after a year or two post EOL numbers eventually converge.

  19. I think the reason everyone is so pro T1 is because of the beetles success. If the beetle was a flop or never even made for that matter, we wouldn't be all over it. As for the SOH I think not many people are paying much attention because of the price point.

  20. A relatively older clip from BrickCon 2012 around the time the Friends line was released where speaker Ty Keltner goes on to address this at the time new theme giving opinion to why it isn't anywhere near bad as a lot of people were saying it to be. It's a little amusing with some funny bits but also plenty of good points also a bit long running for around fifteen minutes.

  21. We knew it was, only saying that the process used to render each scene in addition to the character movement made it almost convincingly realistic. This compared to special effects in a lot of films even current ones where the detail is high yet the movement is too smooth or unrealistic.

  24. I Bricklinked the 2014 SDCC Batmobile exclusive. It was pretty easy and fun. The minifigs are the same as the ones from the Juniors Batcave set. I want to do another set. Maybe a bigger one this time.

  26. Over the last year or so, I've done quite a bit of Bricklink'ing of sets. It can be cost effective, or it can be a little foolhardy. But it's fun, nonetheless. The only that I've completed is Mini Modulars 10230. I'm in the process of finalizing a number of other sets, though: 10199 Winter Village Toy Shop 40026 Statue of Liberty 40078 Hot Dog Cart 8398 BBQ Stand 9465 Zombies The Ghost Mini Build (SDCC / Canadian Fan Expo) Voltron 10173 Holiday Train 10196 Grand Carousel As you can see, I've got quite a few projects in the queue, which is why I haven't finished any of them. LOL Other than the last two (Holiday Train and Grand Carousel), I should have all the parts to finish everything else up by the end of next week. So I'll report back on how all of those go. I changed course with the Holiday Train and Grand Carousel, which is why they are on hold for the moment.

  34. If you buy it, they will come. I'm just wondering what happens when investors own 90% of the total stock on a set when it finally retires. This will be the test.

  37. Lego is not a normal, profit-seeking corporation, for better or for worse. It would be run very differently if it were publicly traded and vulnerable to the power plays of activist investors. If a set truly sells terribly, like 10227, Lego will end production early. I don't think that was the case with town hall or R2. The latter was essentially due for retirement, next in line after SSD. TH is an interesting case, and I have no idea what they were thinking. But if Lego bases lifespans on sales, then we are to believe that The Zombies was the worst selling Monster Fighters set, The Burrow was the worst selling Harry Potter set of the last run, and assorted other dubious ideas.

  38. Actually nevermind I'd rather not derail this thread by arguing over business practices that neither one of us know about.

  39. I firmly believe that Lego doesn't base retirements on sales of particular sets. I think there is a strict time line that they go by and when that date hits that's when they retire the set. I could be wrong but that's just my gut feeling
