  1. It's a great set. Period. Seems like there will be a lot of people with hurt feelings once again because they didn't acquire this set, assuming it was going to last until the new STAR WARS movies came out. They will pick the set apart, complaining that it doesn't beep or light up, or that it doesn't move with a motor and remote control, or some other silly reason. I guess the 10179 Falcon is a loser because it doesn't have a working hyperdrive.

  2. To be fair most of the criticism is "this set sucks, can't see why anyone would like it" rather than "this set is a bad investment because <insert thoughtful discussion here>".

  8. Here is what I replied "No" to... There will be 1000x the number of R2's, Town Halls and Haunted Houses on the after market. This was in reference to the 10179 Falcon. I know there was 20,000 First Edition 10179s made. So at the very least, there would have to be 20,000,000...or 20 MILLION R2's, Town Halls and HHs floating around in the storage facilities across the world for your statement to be true. Sorry, that is not reality. As for your other comments, what I make or why I stoke the flames is none of your business. I could easily keep the information to myself and let people fend for themselves. I have enabled thousands of people to take advantage of private information for FREE. They have gotten solid information from me on the Rover, RI, SSD, TH and now the 10225, all in the past 6 months. The site's costs have to get paid with something, so if Jeff or I ask people to click on a link, it costs you nothing, but helps keeps the site operational. I really don't understand your other points. Are you telling me that DOUBLING your money in ONE YEAR is a bad thing? I really don't know of many other investments that exhibit returns like that. Good luck with your future investments. I hear Hasbro will be making a remote controlled R2-D2 that beeps and lights up. Sounds like a solid investment.

  10. Until now I never understood why people bought sets for long-term investment right the day they came out. The last couple of weeks have taught me otherwise and I will change my buying habits accordingly: If there is a set you are interested in, go buy it every now and then starting on day 1! Since a have kind of a (low) fixed limit on each set anyway and buying early does not hurt too much regarding space and this way is a much more relaxing approach to investing - knowing you have at least the minimum of sets you wanted as early as possible.

  11. People were saying this a lot about the SSD #10221. "Its all grey bricks", "tedious build", "too big to display", "box too big", etc, etc I just ran the latest price guide update and it is now at $711, up almost 80% in the last 6 months. I say its doing pretty well. This one will too.

  12. If he goes EOL you would need something else guarding him. Especially when equipped with power functions. You couldn't buy more (GE is closed), you couldn't adopt some (PS gone), you couldn't complain (TH closed), you couldn't even get a used/dead one back to life (HH done). You wouldn't find your ONE without the view from the ToO (missing), and even if you would, the firepower of the SSD isn't anymore. You got to take care of the one R2D2 that you have, especially when the "power" is with him. Hire a tumbler, and open a secret research institute inside the TB. Develop a new exo, bricklink a UCS spaceshuttle, and deconstruct that darn death star. Gosh, it is late.

  15. Who cares if the kids like this set? Do kids fly a $3000 10179 around a room? They aren't the ones dishing out $$800-1000 for one in the future.

  16. I don't think most people who will be buying this in the secondary market, will be buying it for a toy. It's a display piece, and one that even non-SW fans would recognize. I could even see some SW fans who aren't even that into Lego wanting this set. It's not a set that's really aimed at kids, though some kids might like it. As an older Lego fan, this set appeals to me way more than DS, Sandcrawler, etc. And as an adult, I've got the money to spend on it.

  17. Or they discontinue it because they 'have' to get rid of an old set to introduce a new. That way shelf space isn't messed up. LEGO has done it for years. Balance the income outcome ratio. Might want to check it out.

  18. I am not a Lego train expert, but in defense of the HE I have a quick personal observation.... Building a MOC train station with my daughter for our city and was surprised that the city trains did not have doors for passenger loading and unloading (just removable top). The HE does, so I guess that is what will be in our train station. I gotta think any AFOL building a city would also notice this and quickly gravitate toward the HE for a more realistic set. Not sure if this will matter investment-wise, but I am going to pickup a few more just in case.

  19. Do you know anyone who decides to not buy an aftermarket lego set because the price/weight ratio is too expensive? Or even the price per piece? If that was the case then we'd all be out of business. In my opinion, R2 is a unique set that can't be compared with anything else out there. It's not a bust, and it's not a ship or playset. I'll admit that makes it riskier than other investments because of the unknown factor, but I don't think the risk is that great compared to the potential returns. None of the UCS sets (except for the "new" UCS like the Sandcrawler) are minifig scale, and none can "interact" with other sets, so I don't understand this criticism either. My adult friends love this set, even non-Lego people. My kids love it. Hell, even my dad loves it and he thinks I'm dumb for putting any money into kids toys, whether for investing or for personal building lol.

  20. i said it more than once and say it again. dont bet all your money on r2d2, there are plenty of others sets that have not been crowd-EOLed as of yet out there. 'tis the season to buy them. DIVERSIFY for a steady ROI.

  21. I've been in the stock market long enough to know it's never a good sign when everyone says 'Buy now! Everything's a winner!' This is supposed to be a thread for 'general discussion', not just 'positive discussion'. The way anyone who expresses a less than cheerleader level of enthusiasm for a set gets immediately mocked as a total idiot is pathetic.

  25. You had't even had to have any additional information. I know that this is my usual mantra, but if anybody looked at the ratio of new and retired exclusives in the last year(s) should have known that something has to balance it. It is just clever observation and deduction, I was telling the same since January without any hint received. What took people off guard is that LEGO had not done the balancing spread out uniformly but compresses it into these few months. My personal guess, which is totally irrelevant to anything by the way, is that LEGO did not want to make a move until they figured out a way how to handle resellers in the future.

  28. After reading the last 100 posts in this thread. I am still convinced that it is DS who will retire together with R2. I have no proof. But my gut feeling was also right about R2 and TH. I believe Lego is refreshing the entire Star Wars line to get ready for the new movie to be released next year. These times are very interesting and is costing us investors alot of money and stress. I wish everybody wisdom and good luck. Cause this can make us all some good money. p.s. I also believe MF is done. Just my 0.02

  31. Bought all nice, clean and used complete(no boxes)-10221 Super Star Destroyer a 10227 B-Wing and a 75059 Sandcrawler for $750 shipped. Coming from an adult collector who displayed them in a sweet SW room which is a nice touch. Keeping these for me will allow me to unload all my MIB SSDs and my MIB B-Wing when the time is right. Cross the Sandcrawler off my UCS want list. woot!

  42. This must be Ed's crowning achievement...he goes all-in on Star Wars Lego sets years ago, accumulates a ton, then builds an army of underlings that wipe out inventory from all retailers as these big retirements come such as SSD and R2D2 (not to mention the modulars). Is Ed Luke Skywalker or Palpatine?

  43. You have to break it down properly "One eyed midget" = R2 "rolling out into the sunset" = wheels, and a sunset in the horizon is usually orange! "alone" = just means together LOL

  48. I believe, for the long-term investor, this set has the most ROI potential of anything that will EOL within the foreseeable future. It is in a quality class with Taj, Eiffel Tower, etc.- and the Opera House has a lot of time left. It looks nicer than the accurate- though somewhat monotone and perhaps dull- Opera House, has playability with the functioning bridge, and is a ten out of ten on display. As a long-term investment, this is my top play. I have a hunch it will be evaporating soon... Southern California B&M stocks on this set are dwindling, in spite of an order limit of five on LEGO Shop at Home.
