  1. I'm proud to finally share my model of the Geisel Library at UCSD, which is a lovely Brutalist-style building that I re-created in the tradition of the Architecture series. The final building in the style of the Architecture series sets. The finished model is probably about 800 pieces, and it's on display this weekend at Seattle BrickCon! If you aren't lucky enough to be in Seattle this weekend, I've prepared a collection of photos of the models, as well as a exploration of the creative process as I iterated on the design before reaching this final version. Before arriving at the final design, I did a bunch of explorations including this much smaller model. some photos of the real building that I've tried to re-create in LEGO. More photos and the "making of" at: http://tomalphin.com/2014/10/geisel-library.html I hope you enjoy my first serious MOC, and I'd love to hear your feedback!!! Sincerely, ---tom

  2. Lol this thread is getting silly. It does not really matter if this set retires now or next year as long as you are comfortable with your decision to buy or not to buy. I assume everyone here is savvy enough to do your research and make your own decisions.

  3. I only have 12 Town Hall sets, thats all I am getting, anybody who think that they missed out on the Town Hall I would be buying the Tower Bridge, I think this set will do much better than the TH, thats why I got 30 of them, Its a world landmark and look how all the other sets like that have done, and with the Douple VIP points its not a bad deal. Or wait to the retiring rumor panic buying starts. Now I am only saying this to people who have the money to buy these. Ed

  4. Finally did some unboxing today...anyone else have a weird glitch with the recent promo where you tried to order 1 but ended up with a bunch? I'm guessing TLG has a fix for it...involving a hammer.

  6. There should be 2 types of ppl in this thread: A.) I believe TH is retiring soon and I will buy as many as I can afford for investment each time it is in stock. B.) I don't believe TH is retiring soon and I will buy as many as I can afford to flip each time it is in stock. At this point in time, as long as you classify yourself as A or B, then you're in a good position to make some $.

  9. The household limits are a function of supply, not EOL. If a slow moving set like TH has smaller runs due to lack of demand then it will be limit 2 on LEGO Shop at Home. A set with a small supply will not last long during a double VIP sale and will sell out quickly. This does not mean it is retired. TLG does not keep exclusives stocked. They produce once they are sold out. The only question is now if the Mexico factory will do another production run for TH in which case we will see a pre-order available in the next 2-3 weeks. If they do a large run then it will be limit 5. If it is a small run then limit 2. If it is retired there will be no further production and a certain trekkie can feel better about his investment. The best predictor of future behavior is relevant past behavior so I am assuming PS will retire in 2015, and TH 2016. I am also expecting the BPMs (brick picker mob) to jump on the next exclusive to either change to limit 2 or sell out at LEGO Shop at Home. Like I said if you do it enough times you are bound to get lucky sooner or later right? My money is on AA for the next flavor of the week on this board. Maybe we need a poll?

  10. Questions to think about: Are the factories where the bricks are molded the same as where the pieces are bagged and the boxes are packed? Is there only one factory where boxes are packed? Are the warehouses in the same location as the factories? Depending on how these things are distributed, very few people may have a complete picture of the state of a given set. Town Hall contains some unique (or semi-unique) parts. Say you are the mold-worker who made a batch of 61287pb001/61287pb002 four years ago. Do you have any idea how many of those went into copies of 4191, how many have gone into copies of 10224, and how many are projected to be needed for 70810? Do you know how many are still sitting in warehouse shelves? Do you know if another worker in another factory made a batch? Say you are the worker who packed a shipment of 10224 a year ago. Do you have any idea what the current inventory situation is world wide? Would you know if another shift (or another factory) produced a shipment in the past few months? Just because any individual worker can think "Hmmm, I haven't seen X in awhile" doesn't mean conclusively that X is going away immediately. Not unless that worker also knows the worldwide inventory situation. Maybe X hasn't been produced because it is a dog of a seller that is setting on warehouses gathering dust? Another factor (not saying it applies here, but just think about it) is that molds wear out or break. Part 61287 is used in only 3 current productions sets: 10235, 10224, and 70810. If the mold for that part was out of commission, but a finite supply of parts that was estimated to cover lifetime demand for 70810 was available, it would be a rational business decision to analyze the cost of a new mold, expected profit for continuing 10235 and 10224, and decide to discontinue those two sets and hold all remaining parts for 70810. Just saying that very few people in the company probably have a world-view of the factors involved before a product is stopped.

  11. Ever since I saw the movies I loved Star Wars. Being one of the most impressive vehicles on screen of course the AT-AT was something I wished for when I was younger, stay playing with LEGOs not thinking about investing ;-) There have been quite some AT-ATs and they all have something going for them, though since it's my first one I prefer the newest edition. Anyhow, I always would have loved to see a HUUUGE UCS model of this one. But as you all might be aware of there is nothing like it available. So some of you might already know those MOC AT-AT, but if you have not seen them before you might love them just as much as I do. (if you didn't know: MOC = my own creation, refers to everything that somebody did build by himself without an official LEGO manual (so don't get me wrong it's not MY personal own creation ;-) )) Please feel free to post other cool MOC AT-ATs It's difficult to pic a favorite, but to me it is the ATAT MOC8 (i posted). I also really like the Friends-theme version and the steam-punk one. And the VW bus is just hilarious :-D

  14. For what it means, the "Monster fighters" theme has disappeared from the LEGO Shop at Home. This theme went in and out some weeks ago, it looks like this kind of scenario: (lego, 2 months ago) - Ok, the HH is nearly done, we will sell the rest of our stock for halloween and Xmas, that's great. (lego, few weeks later) - Well... it's already OoS ! Afterall it's a great set, bah, it's better than being stuck with. We do not want another kingdom joust. Ok, we have to ask for retailers to return their boxes, they will be glad to make some room. And since it's OoS, let's remove the Monster Fighters theme from the shop. (investors) - The Monster Fighter Theme has been retired ! What's going on ?! Let's buy some more HH ! (lego) - Damned ! It's already sold out ! A lot of people still want that set ! Let's make another production run ! (investors) - The Monster Fighters theme has returned ! Want does that mean ? The HH is still sold out ! (investors, few days later) - (investor A) It's back ! I want some ! (investor B ) I'll wait for double VIP points ! (investor C) No way it's retiring ! (October 1th, investors and AFOLs screaming together) - Heeeeeeeeee ! Double VIP points are here ! PANIIIIC BUUUY !!! (lego) - What the ??? We sold everything within 24h ! Well, we have no more now... let's remove the Monster Fighters Theme. (investors) - (investor A) I got my set ! Seals 38S4 ! (investor B ) My 5 sets have been canceled ! lego, burn in hell ! (investor C) I have plenty ! I told you ! (investor D) I have none ! Will it come back ? (investor E) I don't know ! I hope so ! To be continued...

  15. London Tower Bridge is steeped in history and a sight to behold amidst the London metropolis. One thing you can be sure of this is an extremely iconic building. Last year London was one of the most visited cities in the world, as it is every year. People come from all corners of the planet to visit our capital. I believe there will always be demand for the Lego TB and that it's destined for greatness.

  19. To look at this from a different angle, there is a saying I truly believe in and apply it to quite a few situations in life. "I am prepared for the worst but hope for the best" Benjamin Disraeli If this is EOL or close to it for the Town Hall, it will be a good thing that many people believe it isn't the EOL. Quite a small percentage of us are panic buying, myself included. On the other hand, if we are far from EOL, then some of us will have hit our quota far before EOL and when the end does actually come around, again there will be less panic buying since most will have already hit their mark. So I say believers, keep buying. Let them collect dust if we're wrong because you won't have to worry about this set down the road if you can keep some money tied up now. On a related note, quite a few BPs seem to believe that when we go on a panic buy in these situations, LEGO produces more to screw with us specifically. I work in a manufacturing environment and for people to think LEGO just switches gears on the spot to pump out more sets because there is a sudden surge in sales due to resellers is plain ludicrous. The cost of manpower with change over, setting up new jobs, and completely changing of manufacturing schedules is a lot of money lost, especially at this scale. Is it possible that they do it? Yes, but probably not to mess with resellers but because the scheduled life span of the set hasn't been reached and they need to replenish. Can they change their mind when the end of life of a set is? Of course but it would probably be due to how the product sells over time and not sudden spikes at 2xVIP days etc. More than likely, they are regimented in staying true to the schedule of a sets lifespan, and only a handful are altered due to demand. The RI and DS are pretty good examples. I know the DS is licensed and one of the biggest/most expensive sets ever but they keep extending its life probably because it sells well. The RI is unlicensed and one of the cheapest sets to buy yet they have seem to keep this one very limited (so far) even though, and I'm sure TLG are aware, resellers are the ones poofing it whenever it pops up. There will probably be one maybe two more runs of this set but demand will still exceed supply in the long run. DISCLAIMER: The last paragraph is just my opinion, no facts but it is drawn from years of experience in this industry. So rip it apart!!

  22. Don't really like the size or rrp of this set, so i dont have any. I buy the sets i like, and when they go EOL then great. I won't lose sleep over not having this or SSD. I like the variety that I have, and believe that my investments will prove to be lucrative. No regrets not getting this one. I hope it is retired if it helps you guys who bought them.

  23. Gave away a Vampyre Hearse to a family friend. They have no actual lego sets, just bricks and can't really afford new sets - it only cost me $9 so it's not a big deal, not as if I am giving away a SSD!

  24. There are well over 10,000 LEGO employees, many of which work directly with the production of the sets. How can a set that is retiring possibly be kept secret??? It isn't like they come in to work one day, and are told to melt down the sets, and burn all the boxes. Are the workers kept in isolation, cut off from all communications? Does LEGO use Oompa Loompas?

  25. See this site is about helping each other out even though we are our own competition. What ex said verify, break them down, bag them, put sails between cardboard and ship them in a box. Now go buy those TH and someone will trade you the GE you need and another set to make it equal and you get the VIP points and the promo.

  26. I still have faith in a Pirates exclusive. LEGO should know that there is demand for it. Large ships always sell well. Or just do a dirty caribbean port town. That would also do fairly nice.

  27. I also like how the CAD pricing is more reasonable on this one than on other sets

  28. That is the problem with information that floats around from LEGO, none of it is set in stone and production runs can be modified. A set can be listed as available for 2015 and disappear is the first few months of the new year.

  33. Maybe now that Lego is the #1 toy company in the world corporate espionage may kick up a notch. But I think the competition would be more concerned with what new products are coming out. Currently we see leaked photos of upcoming sets watermarked "confidential". I agree with Spanky's post so since only higher ups would know what sets are being retired it would be harder to lure them with cash because they have it already and the risk of them being caught would be greater too. Now if this was Apple I am sure we could find a copy of a document left at a bar with a list of all sets that are planned to be retired in 2015.

  35. I've read that this one is a really great in 3D. So it's not just a gimmick, at least no less than colors. Bricks are manipulated, they are not flat, so it certainly does make some sense to see them in 3D in a movie.

  38. Well True, I did not say, but I meant it about Ed. I did call him the ultimate Lego ninja earlier though so it can be inferred it is him. I guess I was trying to be prophetic like Ed's posts. I am thinking we need to have a new members only thread started called "Ed's Prophetic Statements" and have it have a link to dictionary.com at the top and have him have a Prophetic statement of the day. We can then all read it and ponder.

  48. For all you guys who thought there is no way Emazers has 60 haunted Houses. I took these pictures before I boxed them up, Picture shows 59 HH, and I already had 5 Boxed up, and I sold 2 of them on a trade last week. Now if Lego gets anymore I will be buying More. I get alot of emails and talk to alot of you guys on the phone and as most no I have told everybody to start getting the Haunted House when ever you can don't wait to the last minute, and alot of you have taken my advice and have been buying them, as usual alot didn't. I just don't understand how some people didn't get any in 2 years, and alot of you that didn't get any or only a few would rather spend hundreds and thousand of dollars running around all day at Walmart, target, etc and buying clearance stuff, Now Some of the stuff was a good deal Like Sail barges $50-70 and a few other things, but overall stuff that will be sitting around forever. How many of you guys can look at all that clearance and other small cheap stuff and say why did I spend all that money on that instead of buying SSD,HH,TB,GE,Etc.
