  5. Looks like someone is having fun with 10173 before it's complete. It's great to be a child. Choo choo Who needs Thomas when we have Lego! Sent from an iPhone using the Brickpicker app

  6. Anybody that does not load up on Batcaves for $54 or so will be sorry next year at this time when they are selling for $125 and up, as these will retire in Dec. As once Toys R Us runs out of the Funhouse the price on this set will rise to $100 pretty fast. But the Holly Grail is still the Batman Ayslum, so when you have extra money now and then buy one, don't wait till the last minute as alot of you guys have been doing on the GE and SSD, as for the Batman Ayslum I am shooting for 40 or so. As I been buying one every month or so, and not from Walmart I go to the Lego Store and make sure I am getting a Mint Box. Ed

  7. So I got lucky at Kmart today, someone accidentally put a $45 clearance tag on the ninja turtles turtle lair and so the manager honored it and with the additional 75% off clearance items I got it for $11.25! Lol

  9. I'm still in the scoffing camp. Other than the fact that they are available again, which doesn't require a seal code to know, what does it tell you? Did they make enough to last 1 month or 6 months? When that run is done, will they make another? Will they make another after that? All the codes do is tell you about something that has already happened. Without at least one more known variable, like production run size, they're just a novelty.

  11. Got a Helm's Deep at TRU today. $80 after tax. I'm out of town and come to this location often. I've seen it there for months, but at $149. I was surprised to see it still on the shelf. They have a Ghost Train for $49, but still thinking about that one.

  12. This thread will be like my previous builds (links below). Intro : Since I became a fan of Lego trains last year, 10173 has been the #1 train on my wish list. I couldn't wait to get my hands on one to build. Honestly, my expectations aren't high anymore since building 10194 Emerald Night less than 2 weeks ago. 10173 was released in 2006 and available only for the holiday season so the retail life was extremely short. As of July 2014, one can expect to pay between $300 and $450 for a loose set depending on condition and completeness. Sealed sets sell for between 3 versions of the train were available (from http://lego.wikia.com/wiki/10173_Holiday_Train ) $89.99 for the 965 element basic set. $165.99 for the K2159 Holiday Train Starter Collection (included 9v power accessories, straight & curved track, and the 10173 set). $?? for the K10173 Complete Holiday Train Collection (same as K2159 but without the straight track) 7 "basic " minifigs were included. While 5 of them are still exclusive to this set, they can easily be bricklinked since the parts are fairly common in City sets. The set consists of a locomotive, tender, passenger car, Christmas tree carrier, open freight car with gift boxes / toys, and a caboose. Many people consider this the 1st of the annual Winter themed sets that began in 2009 with 10199: Winter Village Toy Shop. Like other builds, I'll will walk through the building process, take pics, discuss various topics like elements used / how, and provide a recap. Bricklink's element inventory of this set pending approval. http://www.bricklink.com/catalogItemInv.asp?S=10173-1 I don't own the box. Manual #1 is in my possession (below avg condition) and manual 2 was recently purchased by a friend in Poland (I won't have it until next month). I will not be using the PDF of the manuals as the scans as quality is terrible. It's difficult to distinguish back elements from each other. Here are random pictures I've found on the internet of the box. - from http://onetwobrick6.blogspot.com/2009/03/set-database-10173-holiday-train.html My previous build threads. 7780: The Batboat: Hunt for Killer Croc : http://www.brickpick...-croc-batman-1/ 7782 The Batwing: The Joker's Aerial Assault : http://www.brickpick...arison-to-6863/ 7786: The Batcopter: The Chase for Scarecrow : http://www.brickpick...-for-scarecrow/ 10123: Star Wars Cloud City : http://www.brickpick...ars-cloud-city/ 10173: Holiday Train : http://www.brickpick...-holiday-train/ 10179 UCS Millennium Falcon : http://www.brickpick...lennium-falcon/ 10226 Sopwith Camel : http://www.brickpick...-sopwith-camel/ 10181 Eiffel Tower : http://www.brickpick...l-tower-advice/ 10194 Emerald Night train : http://www.brickpick...-emerald-night/ 10196 Grand Carousel : http://community.brickpicker.com/topic/13647-building-10196-grand-carousel/ 10225 UCS R2D2 : http://www.brickpick...0225-ucs-r2-d2/ 75059 UCS Sandcrawler : http://www.brickpick...59-sandcrawler/ 21021 Architecture Marina Bay Sands http://www.brickpick...rina-bay-sands/ 21108 Ghostbusters Ecto-1 : http://www.brickpick...busters-ecto-1/

  18. If your goal was to have 20 and you have 10, my first question would be what have you been doing for 4 years? There was ample opportunity to acquire these sets over that time. If a person is new to the game, then I can understand the urgency. I don't want to sound like a jerk, but if you are that large of an investor, you really shouldn't be scrambling to locate the GE at this time.

  19. is that a sarcasm in there or for real. i guess its all relative i reckon... A. S&****= 149.99+tax(9%)=163.41 + free polybag + 5% vip + cash back B. Target + RC = $249-RC5OFF=236.45 + tax(9%) = $257.84 .... for me "A" looks lot better.

  21. And it would also affect those people interested in GE trades.

  22. Well, it can affect the degree of panic. knowing that there is 27R4 run, I can assume that Amazon will probably get some, and don't jump on Walmart's possibly returned beat up ones, paying 8% sales tax. also, people now know, that if Target gets some, they certainly should think twice before forking out $249 ...

  23. Why is it not useful to learn about something just because it has already happened? No, it doesn't tell us everything, but it's a pretty important piece of the puzzle. Knowing that GEs were rolling off the assembly line TWO WEEKS AGO is significant. (The 27th week of 2014 is the first week of July.) It means that the bouncing around of the GE's availability is less likely to be an indicator of imminent retirement, and we can plan accordingly.

  34. 5 Batcave's 54.00 each. Clearance at BN - like 5 Atlantis sets. Whatever the smallest one is that actually did decent. Also about 5 City sets.

  36. Thanks for the post! Was finally able to get a couple more...I kept missing all of the other flash availability from Walmart. After placing an order I immediately went back to purchase another pair and Walmart wouldn't let me select "ship to home" or "ship to store"--the screen was blanked out. So frustrating as I tried with 3 browsers and finally my phone, but then poof, gone.

  37. Yep, that's my plan, or just wait till BF or it hits the bargain bin. FBTB.com summed it up well. Today, Comic Vine has revealed the retailer exclusive bonuses for LEGO Batman 3: Beyond Gotham. To save you a click, here it is a in a nutshell: Gamestop will get the above-pictured Plastic Man. Everyone else gets something that sucks more than Plastic Man. And that

  38. More Police sets, nothing to see here, folks. I wonder what next years' side theme will be since we had Mining, Cargo, Coast Guard, and now Arctic. I would like to see more emphasis on City buildings like gas stations, banks, stores. You know, things you see in a "City".

  39. I picked up the 60058-1: SUV with Watercraft today at Toys R Us. It reminds me of my old Jeep and the two jetskis my family used to have. It will also go well with my Camper Van and Mountain Hut. I got TRU to match the $15.99 price from Amazon, they had it for $21.00.

  40. When sets retire, it's common to retain them for at least 2 years from he retired month, in these cases, the majority if the set's ROI comes in the 1st two years and lower appreciation. It's similar to depreciation of assets but we are talking about positive gains instead of negative. I'll give you an example.. If you bought one 9465 The Zombies set. Retail was $40. It appreciated to $120 after one year. 300% gain. Then it increased from $120 to $200 currently in year 2 (5 more more months left to complete the 2nd yr) so it increased another 66% Let's predict it will increase only another 10% in year 3. You'll prob want to sell the sell during year 3 since that money can be used on another investment to net you higher than 10% ROI. There are exceptions to the 2 yr rule of thumb. Honestly, I think more and more exceptions are coming each passing year since 2013 due to faster refreshes / remakes. Many people feel the 2012 released Hulk and Capt America sets have somewhat peaked due to their "similar" sets released earlier this yr. this is also a problem usually investing in City. Up until 2013, this wasn't a main problem in Lego licensed investing since 3-6 years usually passed before a refresh arrived (e.g.many versions of H.Potter trains, SW Sandcrawlers). There are also exceptions for keeping sets longer than 2 years. Some sets like 10179, 7888, most recent Harry Potter Castle and train, most UCS SW, Taj Mahal, and Grand Carousal keeping increasing nicely even after the 3rd year of retirement so holding them makes sense as conservative investments. If I can sit on some sets that I adore and still make 25% each year, I'm happy with that. I like to think of these sets as my safe (and boring) high yielding bond investments. I'm sure you won't find too many original 10179 owners complaining about holding on to their sets after all these years :)

  41. That truck is the reason why I bought the set. I love dark blue! This mod to another set was yet another good reason to like it.

  42. I go back and forth on that all the time. I kind of don't love going after every set everyone is going after. On the other hand, I think there is still money to be made. But the people claiming the Fire Brigade or the Grand Emporium are going to get to 800$ is just lunacy. Its not that way anymore. I mean, everyone wants to talk about the FB almost doubling already - but actually it was out of stock and had climbed in the same way GE has right now last year. So the panic buying got it to about $220 - where is it now? $270ish. Not a huge jump. It will grow. But not anywhere near the amount even the Green Grocer did. its just a different ballgame now.

  43. Honestly I'd be weighing sets before breaking seals. If you have a good scale it can decipher to the gram and verify with each set.

  44. I have bought many large and expensive sets from eBay sellers in the US and UK and 99% have been as advertised. I buy from eBay at times because the deal is a good one. Sure, there are sellers on any site that are crooks, but the vast majority try to give the buyers the products they expect.
