  1. Just go to your average McDonalds and order something for $5.17 and give them a $10 bill. Once they punch in $10 on the register, hand them 17 cents and watch the horror as they try to figure out the new amount of money they need to give back to you .... (the answer is $5 by the way)

  3. You're looking at this from a male perspective. How many dollhouses do you know that come with a villain? Or Barbie sets? Lego Friends sets? Like any bazillion-dollar toy manufacturer, Lego has done their research and tested how their products do with real kids. If these sets don't come with villains, it isn't because they're trying to shield kids from scary characters, it's because little girls don't care about them. Why do you think they named the girl theme "Friends"? Compare that to the best-selling non-pink Lego theme of all-time which has the word "war" in it. It sounds like I'm being sexist, but boys and girls really are hardwired differently. Source: I have one of each and worked in children's programming. There's a stark contrast between how "boy" and "girl" stories typically end. In "boy" shows, the hero usually vanquishes the bad guy, who then vows revenge and runs off, tail between legs. But in "girl" shows, the hero and the villain often end up as friends! The villain-girl learns the errors of her ways because of the love and friendship of the hero-girl and redeems herself by putting things right. True, Disney princess movies often do have a villain that gets vanquished, but keep in mind that they have to market to boys and girls when they make a movie otherwise they lose half of their potential audience. TV shows can target gender more effectively and have fewer nonredeemable villains as a result. And guess what? The highest-grossing princess movie ever, Frozen, [spoilerS AHEAD] doesn't really have a villain! Yeah, there's the bad prince, but how many other villains do you know aren't even important for the first 50 minutes of a film? Isn't the bad guy supposed to be the one causing the problems? What if Loki didn't reveal himself until 50 minutes into The Avengers? The prince in Frozen feels tacked on, as do pretty much all of the male characters. The essential story is about two sisters who grow apart and come back together in the end. One of them cuts herself off from the world because she thinks everyone else will hate her, but thanks to the love and sacrifice of her sister, she returns and sets things right and everyone lives happily ever after as friends and family. Result? More than a billion dollars at the box office. Frozen is huge. HUGE. It's the highest-grossing animated film of all time, and everyone I know with a little girl is ready to put ice picks in their ears so they won't have to listen to that song again. A Frozen Lego set would do very well.

  10. Both the brick picker price guide here on this site (see top left in site header) and brick link have weights for sets. Just punch in the set number in the price guide here, or search the catalog listings at bricklink to get weight, Remember due to humidity, and other variables a weight difference of an ounce or two on a large set is probably not a cause for worry. But big differences should definitely be investigated -- smaller sets its a bit tougher, since there's less wiggle room on the weight. 17. I think it's more a matter of having your payment lost in the mail than trusting paypal more. Paypal is a necessary evil, makes selling much easier but at a cost. I'll take a cash transaction via craigslist anyday over ebay/paypal. You just don't get the exposure ebay provides. And there's always the risk of having to deal with a real life crazy.

  18. For those of you who had some MHC's canceled. I had 4 of the 5 canceled at one store. I stopped to pick-up the one and she brought out all 5. Just a heads up, if your order was canceled, you may want to call the store. They could still be holding them at the Customer Service desk.

  22. I do think this set has a lot pf potential and it has shown a rise on prices in the last two months. Yes, it will "only" appeal to modular fans but those are a LOT of people! Right now, the Parisian Restaurant is the most popular set at LEGO Shop at Home. Verzonden vanaf mijn iPhone met behulp van Brickpicker

  23. Normally you would say it has potential. It is all the modulars but then in mini version. However, I still have some chances to buy some for about 80 euro each. But for whatever reason I do not pull the trigger. Dunno why.

  26. The 1000 threshold is true: http://www.irs.gov/taxtopics/tc306.html You can look up the penalty - it's not much. But Remember, tax refunds are a return of YOUR money. The govt held it and didn't pay you any interest! The sweet spot for tax returns is to owe, but make sure it's either less than 1000 or else make sure your ROI is greater than any penalty owed.

  27. I talk to the person right on the spot and let them know that it is unacceptable. I know that sounds like a snob but it really isn't. That almost happened to me the other day. I purchased three Lego sets and the lady at the counter said, "I'm going to make sure all three will fit in one bag." I told her no. Do you buy a book w/ a torn dust jacket or a CD with a cracked case. I frequently make comments to employees that have those stupid spider security devices on sets that bend the crap out of the box. There is a right way and wrong way to do it. Now that being said, people on ebay don't seem to care too much but I make an effort to make sure what they are buying from me is in the best condition possible.

  28. Couple weeks ago, I'd been trying to track down a Robie House or two. My first stops were at my local B&Ns but every one they had looked like it had been run over my a semi-truck and then taped back together. Then while stopped at a TRU a couple days later I happened to notice a handful of them on the top shelf of an endcap, but all of them there also looked like they'd been used as a prop in a WWF match -- crushed corners, creases, tape holding them together. Oh well, I figured, maybe somewhere else -- I wandered around looking to see if there was something worth using a 20% and $10 GC on $50 purchase coupons -- when I suddenly find one tucked in with the Star Wars sets -- in absolutely mint condition. No shelf wear, no creases, NO TAPE, just perfect. Couldn't believe my luck. Took the set up to cashier, he takes the coupons, they scan without issues, he scans the set -- we're chatting about how expensive LEGO sets can be and I'm saying ya, that's why I always try to use the coupons if I can. And he grabs the top of the box, right in the center with his grubby little mits and picks it up to put in a bag -- for those that haven't ever picked up a Robbie House the set it pretty weighty and the box just isn't stiff enough (which is why most are in terrible condition) -- and I watch in horror as the top of the box gives way and he basically creases it that whole side of the box. I wanted to practically leap across the register and strangle him... Took a deep breath, figured it was still in the best condition of all the boxes I'd seen, thanked him and left with my now, somewhat less than mint box

  29. If you print your postage online, it is a free service that is added to your packages (it's completely automatic and you don't have a choice to not get DC). If you were to go to the post office, they charge about $1 to add this service to your packages. And no, unfortunately it wouldn't be about $1 to send a 3 oz package. I wish! Shipping prices were raised again on the 27th of January I believe. Shipping a 3 oz package first class was $1.69 (online price w/free DC) last year, this year it's $1.93 (free DC). If you go to the post office it was $2.07 last year (plus $1 for DC) and this year it's $2.32 (plus $1 for DC). (you can check out the postage chart at Stamps.com which shows last years rates vs. this years rates - and it's the same price at USPS.com and paypal.com - just the only chart I could find). http://www.stamps.com/whitepapers/2014-usps-postage-rate-increase-guide.pdf

  32. Delivery Confirmation is the same as tracking. And I would roughly estimate that two figures w/ a bubble mailer would be on the light side. But safely you could say they were 4 or 5 ounces. I ship things regularly from home, and have been doing so for quite a while.
    1 point
  33. Yes, the way to ship first class without having received payment is to use the "Ship Now" option. The easiest way to access it is to log into your paypal account. Then type in www.paypal.com/shipnow into the browser bar. This will route you to the shipping option where you can manually type in the address. And yes, free delivery confirmation is included. You can also do this at USPS.com, however they do not give you the option to ship first class online, so if the package is 13 ounces or under, you're better off using paypal. Hope that helps!

  35. I think there might be seeing a shift at some of the Lego Stores. I believe it is entirely possible that certain larger sets will only be available online. Especially with the large exclusives. I mean that's how Target, Walmart, and to some extent TRU does it. Why not the Lego Shop?

  37. I used a blow dryer on my Target boxes that had the magnetic security stickers. I got the sticker hot and carefully started in the middle circle and the rest of the sticker will "string" out and will come off. Once it was off you couldn't tell that a sticker had been on it.

  41. Sold a complete with box and manual 7153 jango Fett's slave I for $145 shipped on eBay. I bought it two weeks ago off of eBay for $72.22 shipped. I love quick turnarounds like that. Over the past two weeks I have sold off most of my sets that I completed from my latest bulk lot purchase. I paid $135 total for the lot, spent another $50 brick linking a few missing pieces and manuals, and so far the sets I have sold have brought in just under $800. Included were an unexpected gathering, Hagrids hut, the burrow, knight bus, dobbys release x 2, hogwarts 4867, forbidden forest, hogwarts castle, crazy scientist, werewolf x2, swamp creature, vampire hearse, freeing Dobby, fountain of youth, 31 CMFs that I sold as a lot for $75, a portion of diagon alley, trolley, and a few other small city sets. I still have a handful of Indiana jones sets and small seasonal sets to list. This has been one of the most fun bulk lots I have ever worked through, and the buy in was fantastic.

  42. I really don't understand comments like these. I can still find wave 1 LOTR at stores. I was just at TRU today and they were 5 deep in Mines of Moria (granted, at $99 TRU markup, but still). I was at a TRU last week that had 2 HD sitting on the shelf. I just bought 3 Weathertop sets at Kmart clearance a few weeks ago. These sets just retired, there is still stock out in the wild. Give it time. Everyone for some reason thinks they will make instant money the moment that "retired" tag hits on lego.com. It seems like it's a rare occurance for a set to skyrocket once retired. It happens a few times with sets like cafe corner, zombies, etc, but that's not the norm. LOTR is a great theme, well known and well loved. New AFOLs come into the market every day, and they will be looking for classics like LOTR.
