  2. Speaking of clearance, affluence, Mines of Moria, and 1st world problems, I got to witness the soccer Mom effect first hand today. Walked into a Target where they had one mine left on clearance at 55.98 or whatever they were. It was down to one from about 6 or so before the clearance. 8 year old kid hits the aisle with soccer Mom in tow. Kid: "Hey Mom, can I get this one? It used to be 79.99, but now it's 55.98!" Mom: "Sure, little Johnny. That must be a good price if it was 79.99 before." Me: Don't get me wrong, I could've got the set but chose not to, and everyone else has a right to buy whatever they want. Glad a kid got it and his Mom seemed cool. But it's a perfect example of why you get better deals in some areas as opposed to others. When I was a kid, my Father would've whooped my ass for even thinking about asking for something that cost that much. It better be Christmas or my birthday if he's gonna spend that kind of cheese.

  3. I have been researching on lego building techniques and I found this guide The Unofficial LEGO Advanced Building Techniques Guide http://photos.freelug.org/main.php?g2_view=core.DownloadItem&g2_itemId=33732 I'd like to know more places where I can find information on building techniques, such as videos, books, tutorials, and more. Thanks.

  4. I am guessing a few people on here are big fans of the Harry Potter books, so in case anyone hasn't heard it, JK Rowling published a book under a pseudo name, Robert Galbraith. http://www.amazon.com/The-Cuckoos-Calling-Robert-Galbraith/dp/0316206849/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1373980865&sr=8-1&keywords=the+cuckoo%27s+calling In other news, I'm thinking of writing a book, and having my fake name be John Killian Rowling (JK Rowling)

  5. Luckily my targets are right here next to my work. There are seriously two within a mile of each other. And two walmarts across the street from them. I love it.

  6. Unless you live in a place where you always find some sort of desl each time you visit the stores, I think it really makes no business sense to hunt the stores. Sure, it's great when you actually find something, but at the end of the day you may have lost the discount on all of the wasted trips.

  8. Dumb and Dumber is probably one of the funniest movies made. Don't bother with the other one, it will only tarnish that warm fuzzy feeling you have from watching the original. It's also one of those movies that you need to watch a couple times to see the little things in the background, because there's lot of funny stuff that you don't notice right away that you see the 3rd time that is just hilarious.

  9. As long as they don't do anything lame like the Mr. Gold with the 16 CMF for the movie, I will collect them. The set looks great too! Here's to hoping that the Wild West brings back Legoredo!

  11. Whenever someone looks at me funny when I tell them I invest in Legos, I just whip out this picture and all is good! Jk jk i usually say the price is so good I cant pass them up and that Maybe I will contact my son's school about using them as part of a fund raiser. Justafrog is right: being a woman really helps in these situations.

  20. Some have certainly been affected, but I would say they have held up pretty well. I know I was worried about the impact when word first broke about the new Batman releases, but once I saw some of the images I was much less concerned. A similar event taking place right now is with the SW Walker & Sail Barge. The old sets are getting hammered right now, but the new ones don't appear to be nearly as impressive - so in time the old ones will bounce back.

  21. My understanding as far as why products have specific release dates has a lot to do with some kind of fair retail act agreement that most companies agree to honor. Basically how it works is a manufacturer will put a specific date of release on a new product, despite them shipping it a week or more before that date. Some retailers may receive the items much sooner than others, but are supposed to agree not to put the product on shelves until the date specified to ensure all retailers have the product in-hand and in-stock to sell. That way there isn't a system of "favorites" going on in which one retailer is able to monopolize the market on a specific product because they got it first and are able to sell it without competition. Of course, as shown in this thread, companies often don't bother with waiting. There's a myth (often told by Gamestop employees) in the video game world that they (retailers) will be "fined" by a publisher if they put their products out for sale early. This is largely a myth, because although a publisher could attempt to impose a fine if they wanted to, there has not been a true recorded instance of it happening in history, and there is no real obligation for a retailer to pay it. Sure, Activision could attempt to "fine" Wal-Mart for laying those copies of COD out a couple days early, but what regulatory agency actually exists to make sure Wal-Mart pays? Certainly not Interpol or the FBI. The truth is, if Activision really wanted to seek damages for this, they would have to sue Wal-Mart in a civil/business court. Activision would most likely pull their shipments from Wal-Mart stores, WM would respond by banning their products from the stores anyway, and the end result is you have Call of Duty games going out on a much more limited release campaign. In this situation, it's easy to see that everyone loses. To keep the peace, retailers will generally try to conform to the street date standards at the strong insistence of the publisher. But to be clear, the whole thing about fining a GS store 10,000 dollars or whatever is BS. It wouldn't surprise me though, if GS execs told their employees that to keep them from thinking about doing it. Here's an article about why breaking street dates are not good for the retail industry (it specifically talks about video games): http://www.kotaku.com.au/2011/10/why-street-date-breaks-are-bad-for-the-games-industry-as-a-whole/

  22. I just built this modular, actually, and here are some thoughts. I agree with the others, you never know unless you give him a try. Especially if it's the one he really wants to build. Also does he want to play with it afterwards or would he be fine with keeping it on display? If he's planning to play with it, just know that the 2 buildings are rather narrow inside (and they are separate buildings). You can "lift up" the roof and each floor to see inside, but in terms of play it may be frustrating for a child to have to keep lifting each level to go from floor to floor. Know also that the actual "pet shop" is only the first floor of the blue building. The upper two floors are a loft apartment. There is also only living room furniture on the first floor of the brown building. The second floor is empty save for a paint can and tray and a swipe of white paint on the wall, and the third floor has only 2 "moving boxes" (the idea is that someone is just moving into the building). My daughter, who is a bit younger than your child, was with me when I bought the Pet Shop, and she was very excited about it, and it crossed my mind that maybe I could build it with her. When I opened the box however, I quickly changed my mind. My daughter has some experience following directions with the Princess set and the pink suitcase, but the Pet Shop would have overwhelmed her due to the sheer number of pieces. She also wouldn't have the patience to follow through. It takes several hours of building. Your child is older, and he has much more experience, but you may find that your assistance is required, especially in the beginning. If there's a way to help him sort out all the pieces before he starts building, that would really help because I found rooting through the plastic bags rather frustrating (There's like 6 bags per section -- four have the section number ("1") on them, the other two are within one of the numbered bags). Also I found that the colors used to represent the black bricks and dark gray bricks in the instruction booklets were hard to tell apart. Anyway, that's just my experience...I hope it works out for you and your son!

  25. wow! good to see a good handful of fellow packer fans representing already. if anyone plans on attending a game this year send me a message. I can offer you free parking since I live just a couple of blocks from Lambeau Field. as for the upcoming season, I like the packers chances very much. with the solid draft and an actual running game to take some pressure off of the best qb in the game, we should be able to compete with anyone. my predictions for the NFC North this season... 1. GB Packers 11-5 2. Detroit Lions 9-7 3. Minnesota Vikings 9-7 4. Chicago Bears 8-8 (DA BEARS STILL SUCK!) GO! PACK! GO!

  26. Go Packers! While I don't like the Bears, I actually have a Walter Payton autograph (And a Brett Favre one). I met Walter Payton when I was 5, at an Indy Car event. He picked me up, I cried, and my family now has 2 autographed mini-helmets and a picture that will not be shown on here , to prove of it.

  28. Yah. I saw several of The Lab polybags at my Target in the middle of nowhere in the middle of April or something. The ones that I saw were marked "AS IS" and they were around $0.95 per, but with tax it was over a dollar. Still nice deal for a polybag. Not sure why your Target would still have these at full price. I believe several other members have had experiences similar to this.

  32. While we're on the subject, is anyone else getting tired of yet another science related....thingy getting approved? Neat as some are, I am already burnt out on seeing nothing actually original get by and that ATLAS mini model has to be the worst one yet which ended up only getting approved because of Facebooks social network. The upcoming Delorean (fingers crossed) will hopefully get the rendition it deserves. If not and until then, I've lost a lot of hope for what CUUSOO was meant to be honestly. For the love of pete, may we please get something original instead of yet another obvious licensed idea?!

  34. I think that the ability to search the market value of a set is a really neat tool you've developed and it's very interesting. I imagine it's a huge task to tackle, but do you ever envision the search engine to include individual minifigures also?

  38. I just was approved to be a member on Brickset. Anyone else a member? I kind of checked out the forums, but nothing was that interesting to me, after reading through stuff here at BP. would be curious to hear everyone else's thoughts on the forums. Please don't get me wrong, I love Brickset as a resource for set info, but maybe I'll stick to commenting and posting here.
