  1. Finally got around to building the GE with my son. This was the last build in a 4 set lot from last Dec. I'm missing 4 windows and a couple of trivial elements that I subsituted for now. For me, the build wasn't as interesting as the Fire Brigade and Palace Cinema (only modular buildings built so far). Part of this low opinion might be my low desire to build it. I've kept putting it off and unloaded all of my MISB sets last month. The revolving entrance and escalators were my favorite parts to build. Everything else was pretty basic, As I built each floor, the set grew on me though.

  3. Bad plan for multiple reasons. 1. As a community here we try to discourage stock manipulation techniques like this. If you want it now, buy it now. Don't buy it now, return it next week, and buy it again for an extra $5 bucks off per set. Some retailers will price adjust when an item is reduced soon after your purchase, but this doesn't apply to extra LEGO VIP points. 2. Unless it's an issue with the LEGO product on your order, LEGO Shop at Home does not cover return shipping fees, shipping the item back is going to wipe away the extra VIP points. If you're near a physical LEGO store you can return LEGO Shop at Home purchases, but I believe the limit is $200. 3. Buying 5 of the combo packs and then returning them, just to buy them again for extra VIP points might put you on LEGO's radar for abnormal buying habits, it could even lead to a LEGO Shop at Home ban.

  6. I found a ISD at TRU for $115. That was a pleasant surprise--I'm guessing they found it in the back (?). Every time I go to that TRU, they have some random older set (and just one). Over the past two months, I've purchased a Jedi Scout, B-Wing, and AT-TP from this store (all on separate visits). Another thing I thought was strange was that they had two Slave I's on the shelf. Returns?

Came across my first sort of deal and thought i should share. ebay is offering 30% off final value fees until the end of 29th feb for up to 100 listings. It's only valid for private UK sellers who meet the seller performance standard. You'll get an invite when you login to your account if your entitled.

  11. The boxes are absolutely worth something, sometimes a lot (especially the larger sets, or any older ones). If you are absolutely committed to getting rid of them - sell them as a lot through Brickpicker (pickup only). If you are ever planning on selling the sets, having the pristine boxes available for them will convey a sense that the sets were obviously well taken care of. They will present themselves better in listings, sell quicker, and for higher prices than your competitors.

  14. I agree with Alucard1982. We have been doing this for 8 years.. And are right at the cross roads of deciding if this is still worth doing. I definitely think there is still money to be made with selling lego , but it is not easy to make money selling lego, and there is more risk involved now. It requires a lot of research and strategy. Timing has a lot to do with it. And like Alucard1982 has said, there are so many people dumping their stock (me included) . (It is the big players and the little players dumping their stock.) .And it is hard to compete with stock being sold below retail. It also has gotten buyers on the BSS pages used to getting bargains. And in turn demanding them, and refusing to pay what we think are "Reasonable Prices" . I will probably still sell lego , but I will be much more strategic, and lower volume . You just have to stay a few steps ahead of the bulk of the competition. And any of you who have been doing this for a while , will already know how to do that. Any new to the game will have to learn fast. Probably a good idea is to start out slow. See if you can actually make money selling lego , before buying too much.

  15. I just want to further touch on a vital point that ED has made in that LEGO investing is heading towards a bear market. I like to use Kenny Rodger's The Gambler as an analogy to LEGO investing and from the signs and the writing on the wall I think that we are at, or at least getting close to the "...know when to walk away, know when to run". Whilst I warmly welcome you to the fold Gazza, I think your arrival couldn't have been at a worse time. Whilst I welcome a plethora of new people to the game around this time every year, fast forward a couple of months and a vast majority of them fade into obscurity, never seen or heard from again. However, signs have been appearing that have me slightly worried about any future prospect or viable return in investing short/long term. Facebook, as ED has eluded to has seen a significant increase in (clueless) investors and for those with a keen eye a lot of major players on the BSS pages are dumping their stock. While this maybe the time of the year to offload inventory to payoff credit cards, take a holiday, etc; it is quite heavy compared to the inventory "dumping" that occurred this time last year. Another is the constant refresh of highly collectable items (I used items for a reason) that have retired, this is evident in the Winter Toy Shop, Bumble Bee & Hot Dog Keychains, and now the Chicken costumed CMF. Whilst it is widely known that LEGO refresh/rehash their sets every few years, a big one being the City theme, however this is starting to spill out into other theme, possibly negating any returns for a longterm hold strategy. Where does this thought process stem from - Is it a result of LEGO being lazy? A combat measure against resellers? Cyclic Market? While others firmly believe that LEGO is gunning for the investors, I personally think its a little of column A and a little of column C. From a personal viewpoint, I think LEGO has fallen victim to its ego, believing that consumers will purchase anything and everything from them regardless of quality due to the fact they are the biggest Toy maker in the world. This is evident by themes such as Chima, Ultra Agents and now Nexo Knights, whilst these themes appeal to a certain market - my point is evident by what is left after a sale/christmas rush in the LEGO isle. Another sign would be the increase in the LEGO currency that is more valuable than gold, well it is, if tabloids are to be believed. We all know where I am going with this point, so I'll leave it there. Anywho, happy to welcome all the new members, I can't stress enough - DO YOUR HOMEWORK. Those with experience are more often than not willing to provide guidance and help out with potential winners/losers - but we will not assist those who simply come on here without doing the regulatory reading and ask "What should I buy for max $$$". - J

  19. The universe of LEGO Star Wars is changing. Some of the changes may be too subtle to notice at first, but it began more than a year ago. Before we look into the changes taking place now, and influencing the future, let us take a look at the way things have always been. Historically the LEGO licensing of the Star Wars brand has always been consistent. Star Wars had a three-year cycle between movies starting with The Phantom Menace in 1999, the year that LEGO acquired the rights. There were theatrical releases of Star Wars films in 2002, 2005, and 2008. Three years was sufficient for LEGO to create new sets and visit new ideas. Enough time passed to fully explore the themes presented in each film, and supplement them with Original Trilogy sets. In 2008, The Clone Wars presented an opportunity for an ongoing series to promote and stimulate sales of sets. The continued Media support gave the creators time to revisit and update older sets. The continued use of the same, or similar vehicles, allowed The LEGO Group to refine older designs, while simultaneously experimenting with a few new concepts. TLG created sets based on The Old Republic and The Yoda Chronicles. Those sets that performed poorly post retirement. Star Wars: Rebels received a limited number of sets. Presumably LEGO learned from the lower popularity of Intellectual Properties that were not live action Star Wars films. Each time that Lucasfilm expanded the brand, LEGO was there. (Look for the Freebuilder sets on clearance at stores near you within the next year) There was no pressing for LEGO to completely turn over all of the available products. They could phase out the previous film slowly to prepare for the next one. Original Trilogy sets could bridge the gap between the last of the previous film and the first of the new. That's most of LEGO Star Wars history. Before we proceed, let's take one last detour to the not-too-distant past. December 2014, the Millennium Falcon 7965 and X-Wing 9493 retired after nice, long runs: the TIE Fighter 9492 had also retired only a few months prior. The resellers were prepared for steady gains, because collectors that missed out were scrambling to find something that would fill a collection. It should have been at least 2 years before the next version of these iconic, and frequently remade, ships hit stores again. June 2015 rolled around and a very similar Millennium Falcon was leaked. The steady growth stalled and then fell. A new X-Wing and TIE Fighter also accompanied the Falcon, and the values stalled (momentarily) for their recently departed relatives. In December 2015, a bunch of Star Wars sets that had only been out for a year unexpectedly retired instead of reaching the average 18 month life span. In my opinion, the one year life cycle will not be an anomaly, it will become the new normal. We live in a universe where Disney is going to be releasing one Star Wars movie a year for the foreseeable future. For the first time in LEGO history, a new film will demand new product every Christmas. Long time collectors will want the new ships and characters, and new collectors will want whatever is most current. Turnover will be accelerated. I foresee the last of the Rebels packaged sets retiring in June 2016. Going forward, I believe that we'll see predominately Sequel Trilogy and Anthology sets. Refreshes will come, but they will be aligned with the film releases. Rogue One should facilitate the return of classic Original Trilogy sets. So, people who went deep on AT-ATs should be prepared for a quick return of this popular vehicle, and plan accordingly. The new version will probably have Stormtroopers and/or Scouts instead of Snowtroopers. We are less likely to see the return of Clone Wars or Prequel Trilogy sets. Some PT will be released, but they will be fewer and further apart. The fans that were kids in the PT era will have aged and become AFOLs in this new universe. They may be on the lookout for neo-classic PT sets. I'd almost expect some movement on these in the coming years. People who snapped up discounted Jedi Interceptors, Grievous Wheelbikes and other "Hero" vehicles with main characters should see good returns. The 75019 AT-TE and the 75021 Republic Gunship which featured prominently in both the Clone Wars and two of the Prequel Trilogy, are likely to gain demand. LEGO has also shown they are willing to release variations within a year; with the release of both 75102 Poe's X-Wing and 75149 Sacking of Jakku, we will have 2 concurrent X-Wings on shelves. (Although my force sense says that the Sacking of Jakku will be a store exclusive.) Some people are even speculating about a third X-Wing, a classic one, for the launch of Rogue One. Although I think that's less likely to happen in 2016. In summary, my intuition tells me that we will see faster turnover (to keep up with the new films), fewer sets from movies that do not feature events or vehicles in the new films, and potentially faster remakes of popular ships specifically because they will be featured in an upcoming films. We're also less likely to see Prequel Trilogy sets in heavy rotation as Disney moves forward with OT era and ST era sets. What does this mean for the future? "Difficult to see . . . Always in Motion is the future." We will need to look at new factors. Look for the one offs. If there is an important character that doesn't make it out of the movie alive, any set with that character will become a key later on. If there is a vehicle that is used prominently in a single film, it will become desireable later. Rey's Speeder will do nicely post retirement. It is well made, represents the vehicle nicely and is unlikely to be used in another film. It's also a cheap set that many will have ignored. It will be revisited eventually, because LEGO is never completely done with remakes, but it will be years, unlike the TIE Fighter, X-Wing, Millennium Falcon, AT-AT, etc. Will the old Han in 75105 be enough to lift that set up when another Millennium Falcon will (almost) definitely be out in 18 months? It's possible. . . Looking at recently retired, or in production Prequel Trilogy sets the Jedi Interceptors (75038, 75135) and Grievous Wheel Bike (75040) are likely to be steady gainers. The Naboo Fighter (75092) and Sith Infiltrator (75096) will probably fly under the radar for a little while before picking up steam when fans realize that they missed their last chance at retail. Did anyone notice that the AAT 75080 quietly retired? Scene builders will want some of these, and won't be able to get them from retail. The Republic Gunship and AT-TE (75019 and 75021) will probably be highly sought in the near future. Only time will tell if my predictions are right. I feel strongly that the old model has been destroyed by the (Disney) Empire. For better or worse, we should anticipate changes. In the past, OT sets were the safest bets, but with the anthology films coming, we'll see more and more of those. In addition, We'll likely see some movement on a few sleeping dogs. Imagine a Han Solo film or even one about Boba Fett without a hint of Jabba the Hutt. Unlikely I think. Now, imagine those disappointing Jabba's Palace and Sail Barge sets when TLG makes a smaller "Encounter with Jabba" set. Really, it is better to anticipate change than to be caught unaware and have to catch up. If nothing else, it's all food for thought. One addendum, premium sets like the UCS sets will always have their place and demand. That is unless The LEGO Group continues to dilute the brand with inferior playsets or future remakes. May the bricks be with you . . . always.

  20. Hello everyone, My Lego collection will not stop growing and I have finally reached my limit of keeping the boxes. As of now I flatten them and put them in the closet. My question is....what now? Will there ever come a time when the boxes are worth anything? Do I hold on to them, sell them, burn them, or does anyone want them for some reason? I have just shy of a thousand sets so I know its hundreds of boxes. Im in Alabama if anyone thinks they would like them.

  21. Amusing to think the only thing 'exclusive' here is the throwaway box. LEGO has rereleased characters from the Minifigures line before with brick calendars, accessory packs, and similar odd items through Shop-at-Home or their physical locations but those items at least included some kind of actual build and usually only the figure minus his/hers unique accessories therefore there still was something missing you could only acquire by buying the original blind packs. I suppose this is simply running off the minifigure cube principal tried with Target now somewhat with Toys R Us so it is just a box and character though honestly I believe they missed an opportunity for a buildable chicken coop. Also could have featured the latest egg piece from Angry Birds as well.

  24. Oh yeah, it's $9.99, just look at the Valentine's and Easter sets to see the pattern. Of course, it's almost March and LEGO is still selling the V-day dogs on sale at $7.99 and still hasn't sold out. I have to guess there is substantially less demand for these sets than the vignettes. Then again, maybe LEGO got so excited over sales on last year's seasonal sets and have overproduced this year.

  28. thanks, gang i'm not one to fade in obscurity so rest assured, i won't be! as i said in an earlier post, i've been doing my homework for some time but have just happened to start buying. while a novice to lego collecting/investing, i'm certainly not a novice with respect to investing generally. we all have to start buying sometime, irrespective if it was 10 years ago or a month ago. personally, i see myself more as a collector. i just like knowing that i have the sets that i've purchased. yes, it's an expensive hobby but it beats going out every weekend hitting the turps and generally wasting money imo. the minute it stops becoming fun is the minute when you have to question yourself and your motives.

Funny thing is that the seller, who I've met in person for this (always a pleasure than having things shipped), covered up the set with plastic because it was a slightly rainy day and set could have been damaged. Nice touch.

  46. Yet another eBay fruitcake. I sold a Craigslist lot at NR, full auction with the text at the bottom of this post. It includes 12 pictures which showed the as-sold condition of the kits (yes, they need cleaning). It sold to an overseas buyer via GSP. I got a note via eBay today saying I needed to provide a partial refund since the kits were "dirty" and a few were missing parts. I repeated what the ad said, below. He wrote back saying I had to give a partial refund. I stated I would not do so, but would accept a return of the item for a full refund. I will not be extorted. I think my offer of a full refund is more than fair. Much more, see the text. He simple wrote for a third time, demanding partial refund. I haven't written back. If he does, I'll simply ask that he open a case with eBay and let them resolve it. Just venting here. Thanks. --------- auction text: "This is an estate purchase, and includes a massive amount of Star Wars kits and minifigs. Many rare. Most kits have instructions, see pictures. Kits are very dusty, and will require cleaning. I'll carefully bag each kit to keep parts separate, but otherwise this lot is sold as-is. I've taken detailed pics so you can see the complete contents of this lot. The seller said he had over $2000 invested in Lego kits; many of these minifigs sell for $8/ea; there's over 130 in this lot. Not shown in pictures, theres also a small tub of extra parts, and this might include anything that might be missing in the kits. The one non-Star Wars kit is the Troll Warship, and it appears to be complete with dragon, trolls, and sails in good condition. Please looks at the pictures carefully, this lot is sold as-is and you'll receive everything in the pics. I'm listing this as a 7-day auction with no reserve. High bidder takes it all.
