looking at the snowspeeder in the video, it looks to be identical to 75049 other than differences in a color on a couple of flat tiles. so they really phoned it in on this one. will be looking to unload at-at snowspeeder combos coming up later this year. at-at price has gone up $25 on amazon now lowest price $215 since the news of the "UCS" base broke. AT-AT should be at-at the same as MSRP as this Ultimate Collectors Scam by the time it gets released. would like to see the combo's break $325 before i sell. the fact that it didn't come with an AT-AT. and one snow speeder without Dak Ralter gearing up. and 2 snow troopers? that's just wrong. i'm here to help make things right.

We have to hold lego to a high standard when it comes to UCS. The complaints are deserved and lego needs to hear about it. If they don't hear about it we could be looking at Palpatine's Arrest UCS in a few years. If this set did not have the UCS tag I would have zero issues with it. As it stands it really waters down the series.

Absolutely. The designers blew it. They could have added a helicopter just to finally add 1 to the SW lineup. Even the designer of Winter Toy Shop managed to add a helicopter to the WV line.

After a day of deep and thoughtful analysis I have come to the conclusion that this poorly designed and uninspiring LEGO set will be a poor seller and will have a short production run, thus being a worthy investment. That is all.

Had a banner day yesterday (Saturday). I'm just recovering from it. 1. Fell asleep Friday night in my 3 year old's bed with him. Was so zonked that I slept there all night. Oops. Woke up with back and neck pain. 2. Went downstairs and found that the cats (6 month old kittens), had knocked the entire hamster habitat off a shelf. Everything upside down, tubes everywhere. 3 year old is crying up a storm, worried that the hamsters are gone. (Fortunately, the hamsters were still in their cage). Spent the next 45 minutes (at 5:30 in the morning, thank you early riser 3 year old) cleaning up the cages, and putting everything back together. Guess it was time to change the bedding in there anyway. 3. Take the 3 year old out to start a couple of Walmart runs, drop off some Girl Scout cookies at some friend's house, etc. He wants a Happy Meal. We're in line for the drive-thru when he says he's going to be sick. I'll save you the details, but we had to head home. No LEGO hunting for me. 4. He and I nap off and on for the rest of the afternoon. 5. As we're getting ready for bed, he doesn't feel good again. Again, I'll save you the details, but I spent the next hour cleaning. 6. He and I sleep the rest of the night on the couch, just in case.

Our nook is now being taken over again as a play area. We built 75135 - Obi-Wan's Jedi Interceptor today. We aren't original trilogy snobs in this house. My son still prefers "The Clone Wars" over "Rebels", but we do pick and choose story arcs.

Happy Valentine's Day everyone! Here's my MOC passion project (pun intended): My wife works for the University of Arizona Alumni Association. Her office had the idea two weeks ago to make a Valentine's Day video featuring the mascots (Wilbur and Wilma Wildcat) and the oldest and most iconic building on campus - Old Main - all made entirely out of Lego and photographed to create an animation video to post on the university website for Valentine's Day. My wife asked me ("since you're so obsessed with Lego") if I could recreate Old Main. She said her office had some Lego imitation-brand figures to use for Wilbur and Wilma. I accepted the challenge and started looking at photos. Overall it wasn't a complicated structure, but as always it wasn't without its challenges. The real miracle was that I built everything you're about to see without placing a single bricklink order (we didn't have time since I got the project on a Wednesday night and it was due Monday). I used an extra large baseplate and once I got into it, it was great fun and probably took around 25-30 hours over five days by the time it was all said and done. The roof probably took the longest to recreate. The second photo below is what it all looked like when my wife took it in to work this past Monday. The director of photography/multimedia for the University was the one who did all the real work, taking thousands of photos and then narrowing it down to 15/second for the video. This was my first "real" large-scale MOC and all it did was make me eager to start a new project. What you are about to see in the video has a lot of little changes and additions to suit the University's objectives in making their video. All I can really take credit for is the set (building, fountain, landscaping, etc). So... here's the video. We are up to 48,000 views on Facebook since Friday afternoon when it was officially posted. I'm amazed at the number of views and how many people have inquired about how they can build this themselves. I think YouTube has over 2,000 views. Thanks for watching and Happy Valentine's Day.

As a general rule of thumb in not just Lego Investing, but in collecting in general, in terms of what will appreciate in value, is that if it displays well, it will do well. In my 34 years of collecting that is ultimately what I have learned. As a child, I collected anything and everything of any theme. I was a huge trekkie in the 1990's and that was a total disaster, however, the only items that retained some value, and even potentially appreciated were the ships. Why did the ships appreciate, and not the endless amounts of action figures. Because it is DISPLAYABLE. People want to pay money for things they can display. Many people buy things to have a complete collection, but ultimately, the items that ALWAYS sell for the most are the ones that are the most displayable. My gobs of action figures Mint On Card don't matter because you can't put them up in an office and have them be acceptable from a display standpoint without looking bad or cheesy. Some of the nicer action figures these days do pretty well, but again, it must be displayable, not look cheap, and typically the more articulation points the better. But again IT IS DISPLAYABLE. I always use the CEO Rule. If you can imagine this in a CEO's office on a shelf or in a glass display case, then it will likely do well. If you can't it is not as good of a bet. The Lego playsets almost ALWAYS do worse than the vehicles and ships simply because most adults, who are the people can afford to pay 1,000's for a set, do not want to display Arkham Asylum or a Hoth Attack playset in their office. The Modulars do well because they are a series, and many people want to have a whole town, and to have a complete town, they have to buy the first ones, which no one stock piled at the time. As time goes on, people jump on in the middle and then need to buy the subsequent versions. Even a weak IP (intellectual property) or total lack of IP (Think Taj Mahal, Eiffel Tower) will do well if it can be displayed. While a strong IP like LOTR and Harry Potter are not a bad thing, There were very few truly ICONIC sets made from those IP's. If there was a UCS Hogwarts, that would have had major potential, but sadly none was ever made. And while there is the ToO, it has not done well in retirement, again, because it is not something I would put in a CEO's office. It has a Goth feel to it, and a business Exec does not want to convey a "Goth" feel. However, Star Wars has a more "intellectual" feel about the property, and most of the vehicles are instantly more recognizable than the ToO. Lastly, an appreciating collectible CANNOT BE A FAD. No matter how displayable something is, if it is a FAD then EVERYONE and their mother will buy one. (Think Beanie Babies, Furbies, etc.) With a Fad eventually the market will shrink as the Fad dies. As with anything, pricing is based on supply and demand. When a fad dies, the supply is massive, and the demand miniscule causing the implosion in prices. Why is my Star Trek Collection worthless, cuz it was a fad. Why are my beanie babies worthless? Cuz it was a fad. While Franklin mint items are beautiful to display, they were again Fads, and people bought them in droves as they believed they would be worth something some day. Legos are NOT a fad. Even though Legovesting is more popular now, it is still not a FAD. There are not groves of people lining up outside stores so they can invest in Legos. People do not call every store in the area so they can buy legos. Not only are Lego's not a fad, but the number of Lego fans grow worldwide EVERY YEAR. Lego's are universal and loved in every country. Legos are displayable AND socially acceptable to have in your office. I have many toys and Lego's in my office and most people find them amusing and entertaining. The toys I keep in my office that are not legos are typically very well made Sci-Fi ships with nice display value such as the Art Asylum Star Trek Series, Bandai Star Trek Model Series, and Battlestar Galactica Moebius ships. The business executive professional market increases the market value tremendously, and is what allows the toys to sell for hundreds and thousands. Children are NOT likely to spend 2000 on a MF or Taj Mahal. Adults with expendable income will though. This is why the bigger the set, the more people are willing to spend for it. Most people willing to spend 3000 on a Taj Mahal do not want Minifig clone armies displayed in their office or their house. The professional DEFINITELY DOES NOT want Chima, Lone Ranger, Nexo Knights, Friends, or Prince of Persia in their office either. They wouldn't mind a UCS Imperial Shuttle or UCS Slave I though. While some of the sets might return a nice CAGR such as Friends, they will never hit the astronomical heights of the UCS Sets, simply because children do not have the cash to pay 1000 for a friends set. Lego's are like the Apple of the toy world, and as such are able to command higher prices than the average toy.

Good morning fellow BP-ers, Not sure if this is the correct location to drop this topic but feel free to relocate when required. I saw an add yesterday on www.tweedehands.be for the following sets: Star Wars 10188 10198 10225 75054 75055. Total price 500 Euro. Too good to be true but I wanted to investigate further. When emailing back and forth he removed the add, strange as we didn't agreed yet. He lived in Belgium but moved recently to the north of The Netherlands and secured shipping was no issue. To pick up the sets was also ok (easy to say when living in the far corner of The Netherlands). His reason to post the add on a Belgium site was because the sets were bought in Belgium and could still be returned to the shop in case of irregularities (??). I proposed he should ship 1 set first and I would pay 1/5th upon receipt, this was rejected. He was pushing to perform secured shipping and he provided his id card and address. The story became worse and worse. On facebook I found the name listed on that ID card, a regular page with family pics and recent posts. So I told him, I will send a friendship invitation and when you accept this then I trust you to make a deal (uhuh). But he said that FB account was not in use anymore so he could not accept me. Sure........ However, the guy shown on the ID card accepted my request on FB this morning and I asked about the situation. He told me the guy who placed the add at www.tweedehands.be uses his ID to scam people. Every scam is around hundreds of euros per person. He provided his ID in the past when making a regular deal with this scammer, not knowing his ID would be used for criminal activities. Many people have already been scammed through his ID and there is not much progress on the side of the police. Not only the people who paid and never got any items are victims but also the person of the ID is a victim. Many of you know already to be careful when buying online and when a proposal looks too good to be true, well...in many cases it is. I post this topic to warn you in advance, watch out for such strange adds on www.tweedehands.be. But another fact which needs attention, be careful with sending your ID's, especially when it just doesn't feel right or if it sounds too good to be true. Decided to make some fun with the scammer, he will be receiving some strange newsletters the upcoming period

First Technic set built...pretty intricately designed and I am quite impressed at all the moving parts. Especially how they all work in combination to both steer and raise/lower the bed of the truck.

I actually agree with the beginning of fossilrock comment, but do not agree with the last few lines. So yes to: giant baseplate, 64x64 white baseplate would be what you expect in a set at this price point and structure guys, structure! Make a rough outline of the cave-like structure with basic inside elements and complement it with optional modular add-ons, Jabba-style. Add to that Ion canon (that could have be three-four elements build, two Planet-like half-spheres and whatever laser element. And decent four-discs shield generator. Skip Wampa, skip trenches, we have Hoth Attack for that. And skip damn snowspeeders for goodness sake, we have had like gazillion of these. Everyone and their mum have a Snowspeeder. As for the attackers, I'm totally ok with two suicidal snowtroopers, give us a decent displayable base already, we'll complement it with way more than a scout force.

Anyone else looking at the photos in this article and trying to calclulate the value if you split this set up? I haven't put a lot of thought into it, but my impression is this set is not worth the work to split it up at RRP. I'm going to be glued to EBay the week of release, to see how the hardcore set splitters do. I'm looking at you Applemechanix! Is that guy a member here, by the by?

I run pretty deep in Doctor Who circles, and I will say that, to a Whovian, $15 for a Dalek and a Cyberman minifigure is nothing. Some of them are crazy for their merchandise. With discounts, its easy to army build them, too. People are doing this:

A lot of you are really overthinking this. At the end of the day, TLG bans resellers from LEGO Shop at Home because it is a retail outlet, not a wholesale outlet. TLG maintains a completely separate wholesale distribution channel. Just like TLG wouldn't let an end-user buy products through its wholesale channel, TLG doesn't want resellers using its retail sales channel for wholesale purchases. When you buy wholesale from TLG, you pay freight. When you buy retail from LEGO Shop at Home, you don't pay shipping if you're over the threshold. When you buy wholesale from TLG, you have to meet very specific requirements that every other retailer who is buying wholesale must also meet (more or less). When you buy retail through LEGO Shop at Home, you have the ability to be far more selective in terms of what you buy than when you buy wholesale. Banning resellers is simply TLG's effort to keep the two separate sales channels separate. If TLG openly allowed wholesale purchases through LEGO Shop at Home, the impetus for many retailers to maintain wholesale accounts would weaken because even though you wouldn't get the same discount by purchasing through LEGO Shop at Home, you could cherry pick the specific sets that you want to sell and leave the less desirable sets alone.

Yeah, Assault on Hoth looks like a total mess/miss compared to Ewok Village. As a set EV in itself is coherent. If seen next to each other in store EV should easily come out ahead unless you're allergic to ewoks.

Don't know if this is doable, but I find the idea very interesting: What if the members of this forum took the UCS Assault on Hoth as a worthy candidate for enforcing a complete boycott on a set (which would mean to honestly not buy any of this set ever - be it collector or investor)? Even if we cannot know the exact effects on sales / lifetime / whatever of this set, it should send TLG a message. Of course no one could "control" the members who "sign" to support the boycott, still I find the idea interesting, since in this case it would be very appropriate even more after the remake of the Toy Workshop. For my part "I support the 75098 boycott!" (and will not touch this even at 50 % off or lower - as a matter of principle)

Got the theme song to Greatest American Hero suck in my head somehow so I went to youtube to listen to the song and was curious at the comments. I will also be co-producing the next episode of "Where Are They Now". Normally I would have hated youtube for wasting my time and hated myself even more but oddly I felt good. I've done this myself with a couple sets, one-offs I purchased based on forum hype. Put up a 75105 Falcon that I'd got at Costco for ~30% off. Selling it at MSRP would only break even, so I put a tag of $235 CAD (RRP here is $180) and let it ride on the Good Til Cancelled model. Then in early January the set went to OOS Expected Delivery X on Shop@Home, and within a day mine sold at my inflated price. If I hadn't bothered to list it a couple months earlier, I wouldn't have earned ~$40 that day. I try to competitively price the stuff I really want to move though, like all the used sets I'm flipping from bulk lots. Easy to organize boxed sets, my bulk horde is a bit of a mess though and needs culling, so I actively watch other listings, sold listings and price accordingly. Another thing completely aside, you can easily edit your prices on a listed item... so maybe you're going away for the week and won't be able to ship anything. Rather than put notes in your 200 listings, you can just add a decimal place to the price tag. Way quicker. Nobody buys your stuff while you're away, no hassling buyers.

I cant believe how good the rrp for EV is now I've seen the Hoth set. One way to generate more sales for Hoth would be retire its closes competitor (which I have to believe is EV) so likely this one is on its way out. That said i still think its around for the next 6 months of reasonable availability before production is wound down at the end of the year.

For an upcoming set review I built the 75060 Slave I. Many people saying that this set is huge, but it's hard to imagine anyway so I thought I'd share this picture: As you can see, Lincoln Memorial easily slides underneath Slave I if put on its stand. The train and old town truck are insects compared to the minifigure-scale Star Wars ship. I hope to finalize the blog soon. Bit of research to be done first...

My 11 year old opened her own BL store with my help, mostly selling minifigures. She is making probably $10 a week or more profit per week. She can inventory them, invoice, pack and ship. Not bad for 11 year old, on pace for $500 this year. I threw a bunch of polybags that have languished forever on ebay listings and have been moving rocket racoons, hulks, mini tumblers, and a slew of others above ebay prices. Almost 100% international sales: poland, slovakia, S Korea and Spain just this week

Hello all. Self-introduction here. 34-yr old male in the US Midwest. 3 kids all under the age of 3 yrs old - their arrival brought me out of my "dark ages" and back to Lego. Hardcore AFOL now. 9-yr US Army vet (paratrooper, hence "Airborne" in my handle), got an MBA and married in my late 20's / early 30's and now run my own independent consulting business assisting major US banks when they run into hot water with regulators. I'm an MOC/MOD display builder first and foremost. A reseller second - only meddling in moving a relatively meager volume of excesses from my own inventory/collection. As for investing - well, I've always been leery of Lego as a bonafide "investment opportunity", and instead see Lego as an "expensive hobby, but one which can be slightly less expensive through reselling". The MBA-finance background keeps me keenly aware Lego's sole instrinsic value is that of a "play/hobby commodity", and thus the inherent investment opportunity lives and dies both on external market demand and supplier (TLG) production decisions. In other words, I'd never put money into Lego before my traditional investment accounts because Lego is far more volatile - but that doesn't mean a Brickfolio can't be a prudent way to hedge the costs of Lego as a hobby. Active Eurobricks browser/poster for a couple years - gleaning inspirations and posting a few of my own MOC/MOD builds (username AirborneAFOL). Substantial modular-style basement tabletop display. Daily Brickset user as well, for my "Lego news" fix and using their ACM tool for my set inventory. Incidentally, I've got around $12,500 spent on sets the past 3 years; only the modular-expert ones retain 100% intact, with dozens of the Creator/City themes having undergone extensive MOD alterations, and scores of non-city-theme sets having been parted out (minifigs/rare elements sold, 50-75% of the set just dumped into my personal brick inventory for MOC/MOD purposes). WARNING: Shameless self-promotion plug. I maintain a modest storefront ("veritasbricks") on Ebay, where I do $250-500 in monthly sales. My Ebay store is mostly just to part out minifigs from sets (particularly themed/lisenced ones), random brick lots from when I overindulge on retail PAB, assorted lots I lack the storage/need for, some sporadic parted-set components, a few NISB I pick up at below-retail costs, and the occassional classic/vintage set I no longer have the space/interest to keep in my own display. Frankly it's not a profitable venture for me at all, and just serves to keep my wife appeased by showing her at least *some* bricks going out the door on a routine basis (it's the best answer I've found to "Seriously?!?! MORE Lego?!?!? How much money did you spend this time?!?!"). I tend to be lucky to just break even in terms of acquisition + shipping + materials costs. All my listings are BIN-OBO, but if ever you're interested in something there, msg me there that you're a Brickpicker and I'll gladly give you a 10% discount. Fellow AFOL's tend to recognize good value when they see it and capitalize on combined shipping, which saves me time packaging the small orders for soccer moms (leaving me more time for my actual passion of building). All in all I'd say I'm very much a "small time reseller" - if you can even call it "reselling", given I don't do it profitably - but very much enjoy engaging in discussions of Ebay buying/selling news, strategies, etc. Registered on Bricklink and browse frequently (their price guide is my go-to reference for buying/selling elements & minifigs) but never gone to the trouble of actually buying/selling there. With only 60-100 active listings on Ebay at any given time (~20k total elements for sale), I suspect I'd have too few/small of orders there to make it worth the trouble, and am bias towards the postage/shipping ease of Ebay. In the past year, I've picked up just a handful (~$1k value) of sets maintained NISB (both Creator Christmas sets, Ewok Village, a couple $20-50 City sets, etc). Despite being leery of Lego as a true "investment opportunity", I've come to find Brickpicker to be at the top of the list for Lego sites I frequent. Between the investing/selling insights in the forums, Brickfolio tools, and most recently the wildly inspiring St Paul School Raffle, I've just finally created an account. Tend to post very rarely (on any Lego site for that matter) but visit daily. Hopefully this bio isn't inappropriately longwinded / self-promoting - and just useful reference point in the event someone sees one of my rare sporadic posts and wants to dig up my historical ones to find out a bit more about who I am.
