  8. Had a banner day yesterday (Saturday). I'm just recovering from it. 1. Fell asleep Friday night in my 3 year old's bed with him. Was so zonked that I slept there all night. Oops. Woke up with back and neck pain. 2. Went downstairs and found that the cats (6 month old kittens), had knocked the entire hamster habitat off a shelf. Everything upside down, tubes everywhere. 3 year old is crying up a storm, worried that the hamsters are gone. (Fortunately, the hamsters were still in their cage). Spent the next 45 minutes (at 5:30 in the morning, thank you early riser 3 year old) cleaning up the cages, and putting everything back together. Guess it was time to change the bedding in there anyway. 3. Take the 3 year old out to start a couple of Walmart runs, drop off some Girl Scout cookies at some friend's house, etc. He wants a Happy Meal. We're in line for the drive-thru when he says he's going to be sick. I'll save you the details, but we had to head home. No LEGO hunting for me. 4. He and I nap off and on for the rest of the afternoon. 5. As we're getting ready for bed, he doesn't feel good again. Again, I'll save you the details, but I spent the next hour cleaning. 6. He and I sleep the rest of the night on the couch, just in case.

  11. It's about the same with 3in1 houses, not as poor investment as 3in1 vehicules but most of them have to be passed without regrets. There are few exceptions especially with houses that have a special brick with sound or light (I'm thinking about sets like 31012 that has retired soon, even if it will not perform that better than 110€/$, BTW it's time to unload them if you have some and invest elsewhere). For such sets being a Lego builder gives you some hints as an investor. Other exceptions are sets based on robots and animals (and dinosaurs). As an investment I would say that : animals (including dragons and dinos) > houses > robots > vehicules ... of course also depending how cool they are. (we're talking about 3in1 sets, not related with some creators sets like the 10226 sopwith camel or 10233 horizon express) Ok now I'm really off topic, time to stop.

  12. I would suggest 31011 Aviation Adventures as a possible precedent. That disappeared from shelves in 2015. It had a US RRP of $59.99 and can still be purchased new on eBay for that price or less. Auctions in January finished in the $40s for some new in box. The people finding them for $20 might eventually make a profit, but that assumes there are enough AFOLs out there who are interested in retired creator 3-in-1 sets as opposed to the present airplane. I think it's a dust collector, and agree with @biniou that you'd have to be one of the few investors. However, if they're having success, I wouldn't blame them for not sharing that fact, because adding you to their numbers with ideas of profit would increase their chances of having bought a dust collector.

  13. I received my Minifigures Plus order as well today. Very impressed with order. I'm not a big baller like the rest of you, so I just picked up the complete set of 16 minifigures for $63 shipped (cheaper than Target price with red card discount +tax, and no akward in store smoothing or chance of duplicates). These are for personal use. Not a complaint, just an observation for anyone else looking to buy a set vs. an entire box. The figures arrived in polybags vs.original sealed packaging. It was very nicely done. High quality ziplock bags with contents neatly placed inside. For me not a big deal, as I would have opened them today regardless. For others, having them in sealed bags might be more important.

  17. Frankly, I would have preferred he wrap them in brown craft paper, slapped a shipping label on, and called it a day. Alternatively, he could have borrowed a technique from a previous eBay fruitcake I dealt with and shipped the sets wrapped in Christmas gift paper. I hear that 9/10 collectors like to recieve their prized Town Halls and Death Stars in sealed, destroyed box condition.

  19. It might be slightly off-topic, but I've seen this reported several times, however here is an excerpt of an interview about 75060 conducted last year by Anio with Hans Burkhard Schlömer: Am I crazy thinking that one of the three announced UCS might actually be an oversized playset à-la Ewok Village? My guess would be Assault on Hoth if it is anything like the video released last year. Has it ever been stated that this 2 UCS per year rule has been revoked? Disney might have changed things a bit, but this got me thinking.

  22. One in the same,. According to Rebel Force Radio and Rebel Recon episodes the show is now about 2 years away (same amount of seasons). So unless Feloni and Disney wants to slow thing down, Rebels could be on a crash course with the Rogue One timeline which would bring more attention to ships. Can you imagine if the DS plans were given to Leia directly on The Ghost. The ship would def be put higher on the SW Ship Pedestal and warrant another Lego set. Pure speculation in my part.

  23. So you're wondering if using the common pieces from the PS towards a sand blue GG and part of a CC will boost it's demand? Are _any_ of the pieces that are common expensive or exceedingly rare if bought on Bricklink, etc? If yes, then maybe a little... if no, then not at all. I'll say this as gently as possible, but that's a piece of research you should and could do on your own if you think it's possible. Otherwise, you're just asking a question blindly hoping someone has the answer for you. But since you asked it in the right thread, and I've got some time.... FWIW my gut instinct tells me the answer is no. Aside from the $50 or so in Sand Blue bricks, there is not enough quantity of any of the other valuable parts to be worthwhile for parter-outers to acquire this set in bulk (not to mention the other valuable parts like the 2x4 light bley tiles aren't exactly rare or are likely to become rare). Also, anyone who is truly going to drive up the value of rare bricks wants the real thing, and not some knock-off even if it looks good. i.e. I'd have never paid $700 for a CC with substituted colors. IMO The true value of modulars like PS is as a sealed set for those who decide to collect modulars later or expand their city without the hassle of bricklinking their own. (in case anyone cares, the part-out value according to BL is roughly 2x MSRP as of this posting which is pretty typical .. most of the value is in those sand blue bricks and the larger plates. Next up is the dark blue bricks, the larger 1x16 bricks and the tiles that make up the street with a few odds and ends like 2 of the 2x3 slopes in red that can be used as subs for CC)

  27. Standard is they release two large Star Wars sets each year and retire two around October-December. Last Year we got Slave and Tie and lost DS and X-Wing. This year however we already know we're getting a UCS Death Star 75159, a UCS Snowspeeder 75144 and UCS Assault on Hoth 75098. There's just no way I see Slave or Tie going so surely just EV and Sandcrawler around Christmas.

  31. Looking at the pics a second time I noticed the control room in the back of the first picture. That, and the bag numbered '4', and the thing below the train motor cable, belong to 3368 Space Centre. Looks like the white half cilinder piece in picture 2 is part of the shuttle*. Looking even more closely at the first picture, I see the remnants of 7939 Cargo Train (=train base utmost left part of 1st picture). That explains the presence of switching tracks seen on picture 2, because they are included with the 7939 set. It also explains presence of the yellow and red pieces in the container seen on picture 2 (for the loc resp. the truck). *White half cilinder piece may also be part of fuel wagon. So instead of one train, there's actually two trains (of course we can't see if they are anywhere near complete, hopefully the rest of it can be found in the container; for starters, some train wheels can be seen lying on top). I also see one ultra-rare olive green Duplo brick. Plus part of a car wash (blue brush piece, bottom of picture 2) and two brown chariot wheels (below bag no. 3). Inside bag 3 there are unspeakably rare one-off UCS Millennium Falcon discs... or maybe just disks lol. Minifigures seem to be present (zoom in to spot a torso and a head) so the lot hasn't been looted or cherry-picked yet. Some train stickers can be seen attached so that's good. Finally, pay attention to the first picture, right border. There I think you can see part of another bag. So my guess is that we're not seeing the whole lot. I think the bags have been opened by the way, and were used by the kid who owned these sets to keep part of a set in after he tore it down. Even more finally... has anyone else spotted the boxed architecture Big Ben in the second picture? Don't forget to ask the seller if that set is part of the deal Blue dots: 3368 Space Centre. Green dots: 7938 Passenger Train. Purple dots: 7939 Cargo Train (of course the train motor, remote etc. could also belong to 7938).

  32. With so many total sets available and #chaos in full effect as predicted by J-Mack, I thought it would be useful for new(er) members to the site and to Lego investing on the whole to take a look at how a short or shorter than expected run can greatly impact the value of a set. Without further adieu... The Mine 4204 June 1st, 2012 – Nov. 29th 2014 CAGR: 0.05% I loved 4204 The Mine. It had a lot going for it (at least in my eyes) – cool subtheme, unlikely to be remade, and lots of potential buyers seem to like construction vehicles and sets in non-technic sets. I'm sure they like them in Technic, too, but based on sets released, traditional sets seem more popular and sell more. I got a great deal on a whole bunch of them about one and a half years in, and hoped to see it retire around the two year mark. Sadly, either more sets were produced or not enough folks were buying at MSRP because it lingered for about two and a half years. Unfortunately, the brickset.com dates also only indicate the date at which it became unavailable from Shop at Home, but I can assure you that Toys R Us in Canada still had stock into early 2015. I like a varied portfolio, I'm a big believer in the right CITY sets, but the shelf life hurt 4204 in my opinion. Currently Brickpicker lists its US value at essentially MSRP. Granted, it was a CITY set, so if you didn't get it at a good discount you can only blame yourself, but profit potential seems to have been crimped by availability from 2012 into 2015. City Cargo Terminal 60022 Aug. 1st, 2013 – Dec. 12th, 2014 CAGR: 15.97% In comparison, another large CITY set, 60022 Cargo Terminal, was available from Shop at Home for under eighteen months, total. Massive difference for another subtheme I liked and thought was cool. With a current BP value of around $155 USD, plenty of extra room to visit profit land and frolic in piles of solid returns. With CITY sets, I'm not really looking for a set to hit the stratosphere, but I find they can be steady workhorses that reliably net returns – great for mixing it up. That being said, a couple of other sets I want to focus on had even shorter runs than 60022 and have exceeded likely every investors' expectations. (I call BS if investors claim they knew The Zombies was going to break through $200 USD on launch day or even as it started to become a little hard to find) Logging Truck 60059 Dec 2013 (Jan 1st 2014 wide release) to Dec 15th 2014 CAGR: 67.27% Cool vehicle from a sometimes overlooked theme. Add approximately one year of availability, stir, and watch the money come in. Enormous ROI%, even at MSRP, but pure gravy for those with the foresight to get some of these at 20% off or more. The size of the set really helps the CAGR percentage, which is great for new investors who are looking for solid short to medium term sets that can really help a small time investor scale up. Arctic Supply Plane 60064 Aug. 1st, 2014 to Dec 28th 2014 CAGR: 43.63% Crazy short run from a theme most probably though had at least another twelve if not eighteen months. Just now the last Arctic sets have moved to Sold Out at Shop at Home, so quite a big difference. Even though the plane looks a lot like other planes (at least to me) in other City subthemes – like the plane in the Deep Sea subtheme (another Toys R Us exclusive, at least in Canada), it certainly hasn't caused collectors to NOT want to buy this set, even while its brothers and sisters were widely available. With great scarcity seems to come nice gains, even if the set doesn't seem all that amazing. Ant-Man Final Battle Jun 1st, 2015 – Oct 15th, 2015 CAGR: 25.66% Seems to be in a nice initial growth phase. Even with some chatter about this set and investors jumping on the bandwagon, the lack of new supply will likely only keep prices in relative check for a short time. Great minifigs and a very short run, plus upcoming screen time in new movies means a lot of potential. Despite knock off Superhero minifigs being an issue – and many superhero set builds being underwhelming – there is still money to be made on the right sets. Also spoiler alert the 2016 summer Superhero sets look a lot more desirable overall, so perhaps this is a good time to try out this theme (or revisit it, if you've been avoiding it in the post 6866 world). Plus, this is a crazy short shelf life for a set, even if it had issues at launch. Snowplough & Excavator and Others... The whole Demolition line seemed available on sale over the holidays, at least around me, but the Excavator seems to be the exception. Brickset lists it being available from Dec. 2nd, 2014, but general release (I believe) was Jan. 1st, 2015. A retail life under a year and from a cool subtheme, I think this might surprise in the next six to twelve months. Toys R Us Canada has them on sale right now, 33% off (Jan 29, 2016) and I tend to think this could be an easy double at this reduction with pending official retirement. The Snowplough is even cooler (at least in my opinion) and I think will be a huge draw next winter in places that get snow. Just around a year of availability and well-reviewed on other Lego sites all point to a nice potential profit in the next twelve months and beyond until it hits a plateau There are plenty of other sets from other lines, but I have to leave some work for readers to do themselves. I tried to highlight a few I find interesting, but rest assured this isn't a complete list and there are other short-run gems out there to be found. Right now, Hydra Fortresses, Pirates sets and Raptor Escapes are being sought out at retailers. The beauty of the short run sets (or themes...think Castle before and Pirates now...Scooby Doo is my prediction for 2016) is that often online stock dries up quickly and getting more than one or two requires some leg work, stock checking and dragging the kids (or self) to physical stores to mop up the remnants. For me, it is one of the most enjoyable parts of this hobby/business, although I am a self diagnosed masochist who likes the awfulness that retail environments sometimes foster. Final Thoughts Older investors are probably familiar with a lot of these sets, and earlier ones; the lore of the Zombies and Wolverine's Chopper Showdown are the stuff of investing legend, whispered about whenever two or more investors gather. Keeping a watchful eye on the forums here on Brickpicker as well as Shop at Home should give you enough lead time to go on a buying spree when you see a short run hit sold out. Currently, there are so many lines/themes and waves out there that short run sets seem to be happening with more regularity – or I'm just noticing it more – but they present opportunities that a savvy investor can jump on. If you live in a regional area with a lot of competition (from “normals” buying sets from their kids or, worse, rival Pickers) the chances of short run sets surviving long after moving to 'sold out' are slim, so stay sharp out there! 37. Hi Veegs, great story to start the conversation. As an Economist, I do feel compelled to correct your tittle a little. Scarcity (as in Supply) doesn't create demand. It does create higher prices, which is what I think you were after Having said that, the relative scarcity of a set can raise demand if the news of that scarcity becomes wide spread and the "desire" to hold that set, maybe as a trophy, increases at every level of price. Your idea, just like the recent Sea Cow and the Tumbler, where low levels of production can create low levels of supply combined with either consistent or increasing levels of demand (due to a new movie for example) creates a fantastic investment opportunity. Hence why most of are here and why this site is so much fun. Thanks for your post and the analysis on these sets was great to read.

  40. Good luck! My only experience with Shopko was when I ordered SW sets bogo 40% off before Christmas. Ordered no problem (added bottle soap to make free shipping). Email 1: confirmation. Email 2: most expensive set cancelled. Phone call 1: complaining that now I was not getting 40% off second set. Said they would price adjust. Email 3 (next day): 2nd set cancelled. Phone call 2: I want to cancel my $5 soap (can get locally for $3). Response: We can't cancel orders once placed. What? But you did cancel my other two items. I asked to speak to manager who wasn't available at the time. Left me a vm almost 2 weeks later.
