Lets elaborate on that "sell it now and buy another set who can do X2 in a year". Maybe if you had an insight into retiring sets or were just plain psychic I would say this is a perfect philosophy, however you're point is flawed. I am sitting on a huge stash of T1 Campervans that I was convinced were going last year or this. I have Tower Bridges, Ecto-1's, Pet Shops, Brick Bountys, all sets that I was convinced were retiring soon and look how that's turning out. Predicting retirements is difficult and selling a set that to just rinse and repeat is going to get your fingers burnt soon enough. Over the last two years I watched numerous sets that I've sold rise in value while the sets I replaced them with sit stagnant in my loft. One more thing. Very very few sets double in price after one year. Plus when you factor in tax, eBay fees, Paypal fees most good sets will only return 25-50% max after 12 months of retiring. For every 1 successful set its very easy to invest into 4 poor performers.9 points

The rumors are true. Picked up my first ever friends lego set at ross, dolphin cruiser for 44.99. I like this ship and i liked the price. It was also worth it just to see my son stare at me with a look of disbelief as i paid for it. He made a couple loud comments about not wanting a girls set in front of some women but then in the car away from any girls, he says "i think i want to build this ship, it looks pretty cool". Waiting is not fun so many will dump this set early and move on to PS, Red 5, ToO, DS etc. No risk of hundreds of offers for TH, while it is guaranteed for the 2015 sets. Changing market conditions and changing production policy has added a ton of value to the already retired sets. Once the number of offers dips below that critical point you are going to see $100 jumps quite quickly on this set IMO. I don;t believe we are too far from that tipping point and this time next year things will look alot more interesting.4 points

Town Hall is not a set to dump for a quick bit of profit. The rarity of this set will ensure than in a few years time it's one of the major players.4 points

Funny to read all the butthurt in the comment section. What's funny is I would bet nearly every Lego "collector" has sold something on ebay/CL/Amazon, what have you, and made money on it. Then talk out the other side of their mouth and claim resellers are the devil.3 points

These went quick in-store as well... I pass 4 walmarts on the way home from the office, the first 3 stops had none whatsoever (& these were the usually less trafficked ones) in the 3rd I happened upon the stock clerk in the toy section restocking the endcap with the Duplo boxes & she said they sold 60 boxes of the classic in the first couple hours the store opened, there was a line up at the door before they opened! (they're already on local kijiji at $65) the last store on the way was the fancy new superstore which is always the busy one, so I wasn't even gonna bother but in the excitement of the quest I forgot to get cat food so stopped by anyway - they had just rolled out a fresh new pallet full - in the food section! as there wasn't any more room next to the toys. (I bought the kitties the slightly higher end tins this week :-) btw - a little bird told me there are 2 pallets to each store per Wednesday truck, 2 trucks during the pre-black Friday sale - so the next restock will be next Wednesday over-night... just say'n3 points

Great article. Please take 2 minutes and read it. But if you're lazy, it basically suggests that many investors expect prices to peak in December, when in fact they often decline. It is theorized that too many sellers, hoping for December gains, put their product out there, and increased supply leads to lower prices. I actually saw this play out last month for the 10228 Haunted House. I thought October would be the perfect time to take some profit on one of mine. Ebay prices in September were around $445. So I put mine up for sale in the beginning of October, and what-do-you-know... a lot of folks had the same idea, and prices dropped almost 10%.2 points

I think that price is only pulling up three bulk listings on eBay which is skewing the result/value. There are currently 100 listings on eBay. via brick fan: Update: I’ve been told the street date for the LEGO Marvel Super Heroes Hulk (5003048) is December 6, 2015.2 points

Thousand piece AT-AT set releases are on a fairly consistent 3-4 year cycle. 2003-2007-2010-2014. http://www.brickpicker.com/bpms/search.cfm?searchterm=AT-AT 2017 would be the earliest we "should" see another release and with the new movies coming out maybe they give the old sets a little longer time out to pasture. This set is second largest AT-AT and only 1 piece smaller than the motorized AT-AT by piece count. Given the upcoming movie release schedule, if we get lucky with no new AT-AT until 2018, 75054 should do pretty well. Wild card is if we get a UCS AT-AT which i kind of am hoping for. I have 10 to sell before xmas 2017. I wish i had 5 more but i'm saving up for black friday brick towers.2 points

There are ups and downs in any marketplace. In the LEGO secondary market, prices on the whole, usually rise in the Fall and early Winter and drop after the New Year. My theory on why some large and expensive exclusives drop when they should be rising is based on the new wave of resellers. This is a newer phenomena. Year ago, almost all LEGO sets would rise though the Holiday season, but I believe now the current makeup of resellers is to flip for quick profits, instead of holding for long term gain. Many new resellers get anxious holding a set past a year, so they sell these big sets that they made some quick money on to lock up profits. Over time, after more exclusives are resold, the prices continue to increase at a solid pace. If people would just look at the history of some of the current $1000 sets out there, you would see it was a slow climb for the most part, over yearS, not months. People selling their Town Halls right now is understandable, but my sets increase in value long term with each early sale so I really won't complain.2 points

Retired modulars are for adult collectors. They shouldn't be so season sensitive unless it's a surprise Christmas gift. If I want a retired item, I buy it, no matter what date of the year; The reason for more listings could be finance: investors locking in profits (smaller than should be) to reinvest in 'better' sets. Or just cash- constrained investors looking for some breathing space. Selling TH (or HH, FB etc) is exactly what you shouldn't do, unless you're afraid of remakes. The larger the lego community, the better the retired classics will do. Last thing on my mind, is to sell my best sets to reinvest in popular (maybe never retiring) current items... FBarcelona has written excellent articles on the timing to resell top sets. I suggest everybody to look them up. Take care2 points

Bought another one of the Vader/Luke Buildable Figure Combo Packs today at TRU and got the two free polys (C3PO and Space Vehicle). Trying to spend the minimum to get the free polys---time will tell if the Vader/Luke is a good choice. I'm not sold one way or the other. Oh, and found a Gallimimus poly buried in the Space Vehicle bin....$3.05 after discounts.2 points

So, what is BigBlueDogBricks (Brick Classifieds Store) up to, you ask? Swimming in sales is the answer, and since those sales have resulted in money, I'm swimming in cash flow. Granted it is mostly just numbers in my Paypal account, so the swimming is more metaphorical than anything else, but I'm definitely in a Micheal Phelps kinda place. So, with money coming in from sales and inventory moving pretty much as projected I have some spare capital to reinvest. I believe the time has come for me to start getting to my magic number for 71006 The Simpson's House. Pros: The Simpsons! It is pretty self-explanatory. Regardless of your opinion on the show, the decline of the show, the funniness or lack of laughs you get from it, etc., it is pretty clear that The Simpsons are an indelible part of American (Canadian) pop culture in a way that not too many other phenomena are. I also play The Simpsons: Tapped Out and, based on the length and (because it is still working on my phone) success of the game, as well as their regular Sunday timeslot, the Simpsons are still at least somewhat relevant to some people in this day and age. Ratings are still around 5 million per episode according to my expert wikipedia research, and deadline.com has them ranked 35th last year in all shows in the 18-49 demographic, with the listing containing about 200 shows total. I actually think that is pretty solid for a show that has been around as long as the Simpsons and tells me there are probably enough folks like me out there that like both Lego and the Simpsons enough to want to build a brickfield, uh, Springfield. First in line: The line was followed (obviously) by the 71016 Kwik-E-Mart. The Simpson's House preceded it. Enough said/written to get me on board. That isn't all, though, as rumors (unless someone has something more credible than the rumors that can be read by googling 'Lego Simpsons set 2016 – that is pretty much all the effort/research I put into this article) indicate that another set is slated for a probable June release in the form of the Android's Dungeon. If this comes to pass it might be a sign that the first in the series is on its last legs. I find it difficult to imagine three Simpsons modular style sets available at once. That being said, it is possible that TLG simply slaps another 'check back in XX' label and waits to see how much demand there is for X number of additional production runs. Since everything is #CHAOS, it is hard to accurately assess how the first in the line will fade away, but I do know I'd rather get some now rather than scramble later. Gingerbread House! Insert Homer drool! Check out the sold listings for the Holiday Train. As of this writing (Nov. 19, 2015) the last half dozen have sold for around $35 CAD + shipping. Click here to view recent sold listings of the Holiday Train (#40138) That is absolutely amazing for a free set, especially for folks who have trouble getting discounts on exclusives, don't live near a Lego brand store or who are like me and see this as the best 'discount' they'll probably ever get on some sets. I suspect that the Gingerbread House is going to do similarly well, if not better, and almost certainly not worse. I hope. And think. That means I have a chance to get a sizeable discount on sets that are hard to get under MSRP in Canada, and it is hard to say 'no' to gingerbread. Or Gingerbread men; they practically beg you to put them in your mouth and crush them with your mandibles. Currency Exchange: The state of the Canadian dollar makes the price difference between US and CAN MSRP very palatable for us Canucks. I won't pretend to know what the currency situation will look like when I actually want to sell these sets, but I certainly am happier with recent pricing for Canadians (as opposed to paying, say $50 more per modular when the two currencies were essentially trading at par). Cons Not many in the numbers I'm hoping to hit. If I can acquire a half dozen with double VIP plus a sweet limited edition Christmas set, I think it will be about the cheapest I can get it – at least in Canada. This buy in, coupled with the strength of the US dollar compared to the CAN dollar, really reduces my feeling of risk and the potential payout is pretty solid. I suppose if your goal is to get fifty or sixty of these, emazers-style, you need to tie up a heck of a lot more capital, space and potentially time, but for a small to medium-sized investor, ensuring as many exclusives as possible were purchased with a maximum discount or with the best freebies gives peace of mind. At least to me. Limit 1 – For those without friends and family, or not close to a Lego brand store, this limit might get you a dance with the ban hammer. Tread carefully! I don't use my friends and family buyers very often, but I truly believe that the gingerbread house is tantalizing enough to get me to go through the effort of organizing some purchases. Despite the potential ban hammer with a limit 1 set if you get a little buying-happy, this limit also makes it more difficult for others to grab these five at a time, and even if you have contacts to buy sets on your behalf, their account will be limited as well anyway. This will likely discourage more casual investors or new(er) investors from hoarding a stockpile, which will hopefully reduce competition when this set does retire. BigBlue obviously thinks the effort is worth it! Another obvious con is potential EOL – will it hit the two year mark in 2016 and keep going strong or will it be more of a Sea Cow style run? As a smaller investor, I'm willing to gamble it retires at some point in 2016, but even if it doesn't, I have a diverse enough portfolio that sitting on a few of these won't wreak economic hardship on me or mine. I'm lucky to be in a good place where I can carefully plan as opposed to playing the F5 game (not that I'm not into finger-jamming fun – just ask any of my, um, 'friends') and I'm also lucky enough to be able to sit on six of these or so without needing them to retire in the next twelve months at some point. Now is a great time to buy in if you have the capital, space and want to diversify your portfolio.1 point

Hi anyone care to venture a guess at the value on this custom Lego Colosseum. It's around 24in tall and a little over 45in in diameter. I'm only guessing but I think it weighs around 100lbs. I dont know how many total pieces but it has to be in the tens of thousands. I can count hundreds of pieces just in a small section of the structure. Also included are around 135 roman mini figures. It came from a major movie studio prop department.1 point

As a 16 year old myself, I'd go for a Super Heroes set over Star Wars (larger mass appeal, even though personally I am a bigger fan of SW). There are also some pretty cool CITY sets that I'd also recommend, and you actually get more since its a non-licensed theme. If you don't mind some research, Brickset has written up an article on 2015 Holiday toy suggestions for sub $25 and $25-$50.1 point

Nope, these are not meant as investments. After all I'm not here only as an investor, but also as an AFOL who just came out of his Dark Age, and these purchases are all meant as either personal buys for building and enjoying, or serving as gifts for children's birthdays. When I showed this 30% discount offer to my wife, who hasn't been much interested in LEGO, she really liked the Changing Seasons set and the Heartlake Shopping Mall set. Hope she'll enjoy building them so much that she'll become more of a Lego fan too, and make it easier for me to justify my Lego investment purchases.1 point

Huw over at Brickset just posted a great review of the book. http://brickset.com/article/17591/The-Ultimate-Guide-to-Collectable-LEGO-sets We shipped him out a review copy and I know I am very happy that he liked the book. Huw knows his LEGO and I have met him on a few occasions. He loves LEGO and is very serious about it and his site which is why it is the most popular LEGO site out there. Getting a nod of approval from him means a lot to me.1 point
