  6. Would it be fair to say "It's my opinion that most JW sets are being purchased by resellers?" Because they are. And no, I don't have "hard" evidence, but Timmy's Grandma doesn't make Lego go "poof" from online retailers in a matter of minutes at random hours of the day. That takes a coordinated effort from dedicated people who see $$$. If there's going to be a bubble, resellers are adding the air. I'd like to think Lego is too big for the bubble, and across the board, I think it is. Certain sets, lines, etc. will experience micro bubbles though--and this line is one. RE was selling for over $100 on Amazon not too long ago. Yesterday, the buy box was around $85. I'm not arguing profit margin of $5, but the margin has "popped" some. And yes, I know how long it is until Christmas. Just food for thought. "Be willing to be different." - Warren Buffett

  7. I made an announcement last week that you might not have seen that I have to basically completely rewrite everything based on changes in the data we get, so it's a work in progress. It will be straightened out over the next day or two. I have to change a ton of stuff. I do not know what you mean by the same for the Classified what "do not see any surplus anymore" means. It's a crap load of work I need to do and do it in stages. The new template for the price guide is a work in progress too that I was basically forced to make live early before getting it the way I want. Google has been barking at me for weeks because those other pages are not mobile friendly at all, etc, etc. Just give me a few more days to try and catch up. I wish I had all day to work on it, but now I need to switch gears and go to the office and work on totally different garbage.

  8. Hey Folks! So as you all know Dimensions came out with the Portal 2 level pack. I have long been a huge Portal fan and love the games. The writing/humour/gameplay is beyond anything else I've played. There was an Ideas project that ended up not making it into a final product: https://ideas.lego.com/projects/18258 which i was really rooting for. So when the Dimensions set came out i decided i would try to replicate this design so i could properly display the awesome Chell minifig. I also intend to make a GlaDOS that will hang in the top of a detolf (tops of detolfs have a hole) without all the support brackets used in the Ideas design. Below is the progress I've made so far and i will continue to update as i make more progress and when it's all finished and displayed. I am awaiting parts to round it out a bit plus the parts for GlaDOS, and have taken a few creative liberties from the original Ideas set. There are no instructions for this available (that i saw) so it's all done by eye and tedious part counting. I have not made it modular like the original Ideas design intended, and the back side is abnormally ugly right now that i may eventually cover up with plates. Problems I've encountered (aside from the old: "Dammit, i swore i ordered enough of these pieces!"): - The sentry turret from the Dimensions set is way too big, i'll need to make a few micro ones which i have yet to get parts for. - Getting customs stickers to fit on LEGO bricks is hard (i went with stickers instead of brickbuilding the chamber sign). - Couldn't find a "swamp" like colour to simulate the gross water found in test chambers. - Not sure how to come at making the portals themselves, i may just not include them. - GlaDOS is a very odd design, I've gone with a different one than the Ideas design and the parts are on the way. - Not sure how to connect the floor pieces with the 2 walls, however i may not even need to for display purposes. A bit of the modular nature of the set. However nowhere near as modular as the designer's model. The back needs some serious work haha, plates of all sizes and colours! but they were just from my personal stash until i figured out what i needed. And finally this is the top of the walls that i am waiting for tiles pieces to arrive to cover up the Technic bits, and a few more of the Technic squares to replace some basic bricks on the right side to make it more flush. Updates will come as i get more pieces in the mail Thanks for looking!

  11. I just finished an interesting interview with LEGO Artist Paul Wellington, who is probably best known for his large "Brickville" and "Brick City" microscale scenes. I was more interested in his intricate small-scale LEGO models of real buildings like the National Congress of Brazil (as featured in my book The LEGO Architect), and his most recent microscale model of Unity Temple by architect Frank Lloyd Wright.NATIONAL CONGRESS OF BRAZILBrasilia, Brazil, 1964, Oscar Niemeyer.LEGO Model by Paul Wellington."The scale of the National Congress of Brazil [LEGO] model is solely based on the sides of the towers, which use 1×8 tiles. I wanted to maximize the number of windows (trans-light blue plates) therefore the tiles could only be connected in one place."UNITY TEMPLEOak Park, Illinois, 1908, Frank Lloyd Wright.LEGO Model by Paul Wellington."Unity Temple was conceived by utilizing 2×2 medium stone gray bricks as the corners of the building. Next I imagined creating the columns out of 1×1 bricks with handles. Everything after that essentially fell into place."I asked Paul to tell me how he works within the limited selection of LEGO Elements. He explained: "For the most part I don’t have a problem with the selection of LEGO, just deciding what to build. I like to come up with new uses for pieces, as I rather focus on what LEGO does have rather than don’t. Some of my favorite and most commonly used pieces include headlight bricks, cheese slopes (1x1x2/3 slopes) and brackets. Using just these three parts alone I can create numerous designs from LEGO." Paul's dream elements include: 1×1 Grille Tile, 1×1 Plate with door rail, Wedge Tiles, 1×1 Brick with 2 Adjacent Knobs, and the 1×5 Brick (not pictured).I also asked Paul which new elements he most wishes would be added to the LEGO System. He had a nice list of ideas, which I drew out to share here.Learn more about Paul, how he uses 3D Modeling software to make amazing rendered images of his models, his Brickville / Brick City projects and more by reading the whole interview at:http://brickarchitect.com/2015/paul-wellington/Sincerely,---Tom

  18. Understood. I just think the number of "investors only" on this site would suprise you. There seem to be a large percentage here who care nothing for lego bricks as toys and view them strictly as a commodity. I could be wrong but those types of members are the most vocal in the forums so that is what I am basing this comment of off.

People here are fed up with you and your bull spit so if you don't like it, you get can get lost. Yes I said that. No I don't like you. I try to be patient but you are being an a**hole to mods and especially to other members. If you want we can arrange for your posts to go through an approval process. Despite what you think this isn't a democracy and Jeff and Ed ask us (the mall cops) to keep up with the threads and right the ship from time to time. If it was up to me if have banned your ass a long time ago for the way you "speak" to everyone here.

  22. There have been a lot of changes since LEGO almost went bankrupt in the early 2000s: licensed sets became the norm, better designs started coming into production andLEGO became the world’s largest toy manufacturer. All this changes and subsequent success created a new breed of investing: buying sets and holding after their retirement date. For years, this alternative market went unnoticed, propping up the prices of popular sets such as the 10179 Millenium Falcon. As expected, however, higher returns attracted new investors, inherently changing the way the secondary market behaved. In this new era, with many more participants and higher price pressure, it is extremely easy for newer investors to get burnt out, make mistakes or even completely forget about their LEGO investing hobby (or business). For this reason, I decided to write this short article with some investment tips and strategies that can help the newer participants enjoy and make money from their favorite toy brand. Golden Rule: Set your long term goals LEGO investing is a lot like more traditional financial planning. If you don’t take the time to set some objectives, there will be no way to completely gauge success or even to properly develop an investment strategy. For that reason, the first step will be to figure out what exactly you are trying to achieve: Do you see LEGO investing as a key part of your investment portfolio or more as a side business/hobby for extra cash? To me, this is the most important question. Someone willing to seriously put some money into LEGO for the long term will need to consider a vastly larger number of factors than someone who is just willing to put in a small percentage of their funds. Insurance, proper storage and fund allocation take a more important role in the case of the former. In the case you see this more as an online business, a good inventory tracking system, shipping supplies and time will be the main considerations. Once you have determined you long-term strategy, it is important to figure out which types of sets you will be investing in. To me, focusing on large LEGO exclusives is the “safer” way to lock in a pretty decent return in the long term. While the capital investment and storage space required to invest in these sets is significantly higher/larger than the average, most of them have also produced some of the most consistent and positive returns in the investment market. It is easy to see why. We are talking about iconicand highly detailed sets, from both licensed and unlicensed themes, that the adult collector with a higher disposable income is very attracted to. That’s definitely the most attractive target market when investing in LEGO sets. Furthermore, the higher price point and space requirements limit the amount of sets that can be hoarded by the average investor, thus reducing supply in the long term. While some people may be able to spend several thousand dollars and dedicate a whole room to store those dozens of Death Stars, most people struggle with at least one of those two key considerations. This is not to say investing in smaller sets or even figures makes no sense. We all know that sometimes sets like the X-Wing 9493 produce outstanding percentage returns for one reason or another, so it is completely understandable for investor to consider these for investment. Also, non-exclusives get the advantage when it comes to acquiring them at significant discounts given LEGO’s policy of not allowing discounts on exclusives. The problem with these sets, in my opinion, is that it is so much harder to pick winners and avoid purchasing the duds. Does Home One ring a bell? Setting up an strategy After deciding which blend of sets you will be pursuing, it is time to set up a buying strategy. I think it is extremely helpful to figure out how many copies of a particular set you would like to have before retirement, and making periodic purchases to make sure you meet that goal. As an example, you could decide that you will purchase one Palace Cinema each month to make sure you get to your desired goal of 10 before retirement. Making sure you stick to your strategy will make it easier for you to achieve your minimum goal and avoid having to scramble to get multiple quantities when the set starts disappearing from the market. How many times have you read someone mentioning that they would like to have a couple more of a particular set when it is already too late? Don’t make that mistake yourself! If by the time a set starts showing signs of retirement you already have your minimum quantity, then whatever you are able to acquire after that will be just an extra source of happiness instead of stress. Of course, your strategy can be flexible enough to make sure that you are taking advantage of potential deals or discounts. For example, LEGO will be offering double VIP points in early October and it might make sense to hold this month’s purchases until then. Having said that, I recommend making this kind of behavior an exception rather than the norm; It just does not make sense to completely miss out of a set that ends up appreciating more than 50% because you waited a couple weeks to save 10%. Core-Satellite Approach Just like in the stock market, you can insert a little variety into your investing life by following the core-satellite approach. For example, let’s assume you have an investing budget of $1000 per month. You could divide this into a core fund of $800 that you will allocate to long term, safer investments (exclusives, Ideas sets or whatever you really want to add to your portfolio and keep for the long haul), while keeping the remaining $200 for riskier bets. You think Raptor Escape will be a Zombies 2.0? You can throw your money into some of those; want to try and flip some Wall-E sets before they are available? That works too! By dividing your investments in this manner you pretty much guarantee you’ll invest the $800 every month, while still having some money to test your set-picking prowess. This leads nicely into my last point. Personally, I believe that investing in LEGO should be not only profitable, but fun as well. It is easy to get inpatient or even bored when all you are doing is hoarding sets and not making any money out of it. While this is an essential part of any investment, I find that people should always try to keep things interesting and fun by trying to flip sets, sell minifigures or even re-selling used sets. Any of these activities will generate some extra income and make you feel a little more excited, therefore avoiding falling into a routine that can get boring over time. Obviously, these tips will not work for everyone. Find what works for you, think about your goals and stick to an strategy and you will be in the path of having a pretty healthy alternative income stream in the long run. Hope you enjoyed this article, thanks for reading!

  34. Is $5500 a good price to pay for a Pristine condition 1st Edition 10179? It's still in it's outer shipping cardboard box that says Millennium Falcon Shipper Inside is its inner cardboard box and some letter from Lego. Certificate of authenticity should be inside This inner cardboard box is still sealed shut and has never been opened before. Inside it, the 10179 that has never seen the light of day. Probably a 10/10 mint box Seller had 5 of these, sold 2 already. He's only going to sell one more of these, keeping the last 2 for him and his son. I really really want to buy it because this is as perfect a specimen as you're going to get. It's been kept in storage with 24/7 Air-conditioning for the past 8 years.

  40. If this theme can triple my investment then i will consider it a win. We shall see what happens in february. If there is a massive full scale restock world wide with multiple retail outlets then this themes potential diminishes. If its just one last minor run then it becomes scarce then ill feel good about it. But flipping rr, da, trex, etc for less than 50% over msrp isnt a huge win in my book. Id rather focus on previously retired sets with scarcer reseller numbers. I dont always like to spend a lot of time having to compete with a lot of those happy to always flip the latest sets and be ok with those %s and move on to the next qf craze. So my philosophy is different than the corys of the world.
