  1. There is no need for this. They do the best they can for free. Everyone wants to take shots at the Mods, but until you walk in someone's shoes, it is easy to talk. It is difficult keeping the threads in order. Many people post threads that can be added to an existing thread. They take pride in their efforts and try to keep the forum clear of spam and obscene discussions. This forum is pretty lenient. Other LEGO forums just remove your post and you disappear from the site.

  2. I don't mean this as any sort of criticism or taking sides, but I could see some value in longer/busy threads like this being updated with a new thread yearly, or something similar: "Retiring Soon - Open Speculation - 2015" or something like that, which might make it a little more convenient for looking for current or even researching particular information from previous years. I can see this working on a few other threads too - Order Status, LEGO Employee Said, etc etc. Just might be more efficient/convenient.

  3. Don't worry half the people on this site will be Scrambling to buy Death Stars when its just about to late, and coming up with the $400 to buy them will be another problem for alot of other people. So you guys that still believe this set is a dud or will take years to make big money will miss the Biggest Boat yet. Ed

  7. Look at the recent releases of the Maersk line of sets and I would have thought that they would have performed better. Enough off topic conversation. The Mods will delete all of my posts now.

  8. The value of time is very relative. I have a house full of kids (6 of them most of the time) and a full time job. I'm in better shape with a buy and hold/traditional investor perspective. I don't have time to spend running after clearance deals (which aren't that plentiful around here, anyway). More power to those who can. A 2.5 hour round trip to the nearest LEGO store is a trek when there's homework to help with, dinner to cook, and soccer games to sideline-pace. I think there's room for all sorts of strategies, and I won't poo-poo anyone who's making money and happy. Missing one of those two... why do it? There are other ways to find happiness and make money. Missing both, well... I still don't think the Sandcrawler is retiring this soon.

  10. Wanted to post a close-out to this thread. The Cafe Corner (with original box/instructions) sold buy-it-now on eBay for $1300 less than 2 hours after I listed it. Prices on these are definitely trending upward, and very few original (used) 10182 kits have been available the last couple of weeks. FYI. edit: and I had messages from 2 other eBay members asking if I had any others at that price. Clearly, $1300 was probably underpriced a bit. Again, FYI for my friends here.

  13. With few exceptions, the forums are to express an opinion about Lego and a Lego investing, not about complaining about the organization of said forums. That said, the site's Admins and Mods have actually provided a separate forum for this discussion: http://community.brickpicker.com/topic/4926-forum-rules-regulations-facts-and-etiquette/page-2#entry145308 And if you are just having a bad day, feel free to post here: http://community.brickpicker.com/topic/6535-complaint-thread/?fromsearch=1 The forum has been around a lot longer than your time here as a member. The site mods and admins only ask that you give just a bit of consideration to where to place all subsequent posts. It seems this agreement we have with our members is working as the site is now 40,000 members strong, and there have been almost no complaints registered about moving posts. I sincerely hope you heed our advice and become a productive member of the community. Have a wonderful day.

  15. This type of price matching is frowned upon around here... It falls in that grey area of what some might consider unethical. TRU does not price match clearanced items so advocating "hiding" the clearance tag is a no-no.

  18. I am one who is staying away from this set. Don't get me wrong, I think it's a cool set and will do well when and if it ever retires. My son has one in our personal collection that we assembled together. It was a great build and he plays with it all the time. At $400 a pop though, I'd rather get 2 Slave 1s or 2 tumblers. I think both of those sets have as much if not more potential as the DS, and they don't weigh a crap ton, so shipping will be a lot easier. I've been buying one of each of those each month and will continue to do so for the bulk of their life cycle. This way I can accumulate my target on those and stay under the radar as I do it.

  19. ^Yes. Us member of this forum like to think more highly of ourselves than we should. A few hundred people buying a few thousand sets is not going to change the production plans of a multi-billion dollar company.

  20. what I gathered from post......"MODS and admins you are doing a crappy job running this site and I know what's best for this site because I have 9 posts". I'm not sure who moved your post but I will definitely find out and let them know you do not approve. My suggestion to you is if you feel you know how to run a FREE site any better you should stop wasting your time here and start your own.

  22. Just about the only thing I am going to guarantee around here is that the majority WILL ignore that little snippet of wisdom... Too bad there is no blog about "reseller etiquette and advice for the new investor" to cover such topics as: the BAN Hammer and Lego's stance on reselling Ordering limits in general, and other options to accumulate stock How to handle coupon confusion with grace and patience 0 feedback buyers - innocent or not? How to spot scam / counterfeit listings and avoid supporting their sellers TRU parking lots Useful, anti-inflammatory phrasing of questions and opinions on this site and so on... As for Red 5, I believe it was a very poor seller for many of the reasons that have not been mentioned these last few pages, and I believe it flew LOW in the trench avoiding EOL radar for far "too long" (given the horde's recent acuity and ferocity) due to all the other recent Sold Outs, holiday disruption, surplus stock nearly everywhere, and other factors. I believe it has not been produced in quite some time... and probably wasn't intended to be made again. I would be quite thrilled, however, to see it come back in force for a while longer. If we were ever to find out that the horde triggered such a thing, that would make this a seriously fun business!

  24. This is not related to the Birds set, but thank you to all above that expressed concern about our cat. I haven't been back on here since then to post. Unfortunately, we had to put her to sleep last Saturday, so it's been a rough week and a half. Again, I appreciate it, and please give all of your cats, or pets of whatever furry kind, a hug and appreciate them while they're still here.

  30. There is a new version of the forum that is in Beta stage right now and Jeff tells me it is quite advanced. I think we will address the entire community when the new forum goes live with some simple and common sense rules for all to follow...such as repeat content, moving threads, spam, new member post approval and similar issues.

  31. Who knows. DeTomaso made lots of birds. https://www.flickr.com/photos/detomaso/sets/ But I think LEGO has already selected the best three birds (in their opinion) from those different themes: Tropical, British, and North American. So I would say that it's very unlikely to see more as Creator lego sets (and nearly impossible as Ideas set). Well, if he lists his Oceana Birds sets on the Lego Ideas website, and it's supported (10,000) , maybe... (the kiwi is cute !) https://www.flickr.com/photos/detomaso/sets/72157633593548759/

  32. Thanks for posting this. I picked it up today. It's deleted now, but it was a Palace Cinema and an Architecture Studio (first edition version) for $250 total. Very nice guy. Adult collector. Having to sell off a bunch of stuff due to a personal situation and home for sale. He said he would be posting more to Craigslist, he had one of a bunch of random sets, mostly recently retired or current super heroes, Star Wars, the Hobbit, and a few Ideas like Minecraft, BTTF, and the Ecto-1. Probably a good deal to be had there for someone for the whole lot, but I only had enough cash for what I planned to buy.

  34. If you ever get to the point of dozens of sales per week, peel and stick labels are the way to go. When bought in bulk peel and sticks are very cost effective and a real time saver. I remember doing a cost analysis on the amont of tape used and the price per lable...you may be surprised. When using plain paper, it is recommended not to tape over the bar code...so that scans work. And remember set your printer to draft to save on ink.

Not saying it won't go up in value just not one I'm worried about accumulating. I'll let a few exclusives pass by for other ones I like better and feel better with and get can high quantities on.

  38. Check out this one, I think this guy does some amazing modifications to existing modulars: Sjaak Lego 10246 XL Mod: Full collection of his photos HERE. Our family is working on the DO now, the detail is amazing. We primarily display our modulars but damn, building this thing is incredible. For us, the best part is the building and this is the most fun we have had building a modular yet. Every modular just gets more and more detailed and the building techniques keep getting better. Can't wait for 2016..

  39. Ahhhhhh if only there was such a thing as a production system that employees could check and it would tell them how long a set was going to be in production. Some employee is sitting somewhere right now telling his co workers of a funny story he made up to tell a reseller today.

  43. So i finally finished my 10030, but ended up not making it %100 authentic. Some of the original light gray pieces and rare pieces not included in the bulk buy were just getting so expensive and i wasn't sure i wanted to throw too much money at this given it was looking like it would take a lot of work to wall mount. After many weeks of tinkering and testing i have determined it just won't really work or look good mounted vertically. The inner frame is not nearly as strong as the 10179, and most of it's construction will be difficult to assure it can withstand a vertical position. Many more technic beams and liftarms will be needed, and new construction to keep the large side panels on (the magnets are pretty poor). Added to that is the fact that the ship doesn't look all that great mounted vertically like the 10179. So i just finished the build with some substitute parts (mostly on the inside). I'm really not sure if i want to keep it at this point. It takes up sooo much room. I've had it listed on kijiji for an inflated amount, but got no interest. Obviously the fact that it's not %100 authentic will do that, but i figured i'd get low-ballers! I might put it up for trade here and see if someone wants to finish where i started, or keep it for themselves! However shipping this beast from Canada to elsewhere will cost an arm and a leg. Nonetheless the build was fun and i don't regret attempting it as this really is a beautiful set. It's just a shame it takes up so much space while on display (i wasn't entirely surprised by this though). Anyways here are a few pics: 10179 still going strong no structural bending/warping, and no terrifying sounds of Lego crashing in the night haha.

  44. I think you have to know what your goal is first. If you're just trying to identify what sets may be present, that's one thing. If your going to sell it off in mixed bulk lots, that's another thing, and if you're planning on building your own parts library or bricklink store, then you have to go all the way. I just went through a 90lb lot with over 200 figs that were all jumbled up - individual hands, legs, arms everywhere. Old Harley Quinn's head with Han solo's torso and one orange arm, one blue arm - that kind of thing. First sort (1 big bin for each category): all bricks (including modified), slopes, plates 4x4 and up, plates that aren't a square or a rectangle, plates 1-wide and 2-wide (same bin), anything that's 1x1, anything with printing or a sticker applied, all wedges and hulls, all minifigs parts and accessories, anything technic (except bricks), and anything "interesting" (like a slope in a rare color, an odd vehicle plate, anything that might lead you directly to only a handful of sets). I throw things like telescopes, goblets, coffee cups, "flames", bones, barbs, binoculars, and loud hailers in with the 1x1's. And then 1 bin for everything else. Second sort: the "everything else" bin gets sorted into big pieces and not big pieces. Plates get sorted into 1-wide, 2-wide, 4-wide, and 6-wide. Bricks get sorted into 1x2, 1x3, 1x4, 1x6+, 2x2, 2x3, 2x4, 2x6+, and everything else (1x1x5, 1x2x2, 4x8, etc.). Slopes (both regular and inverted in the same bin) become 1x2, 1x3, 1x4, 1x6, 2x2, 2x3, 2x4, anything thats 2 bricks tall, and everything else. Third sort: 1x2 plates get separated into modified and regular. If you are trying to re-create sets, you'll spend a lot of time going through modified 1x2 plates, so you can certainly subdivide these. Same with 1x2 bricks. If you're going for sets or inventory, then technic gets sorted into axles, connectors, lift arms, pins, gears, and everything else. The "everything else small" bin from the 2nd sort gets all the handles, panels, seats, stop bars and light saber wands, and barrels/ trash bins/ container boxes pulled out. The "everything else big" bin gets all windows/ doors, and windscreens pulled out. Target has these cheap bins that they sell in bundles of 5. I think they're 6qt bins with your choice of green or grey snap on lids. They're like $5.25 for 5 bins. I got 40 of them at first, and also used large Lego PAB cups for some parts. That ought to give you a really good start.
