  1. Gavin's father reached out to me today. They are organizing a fund raiser to help pediatric patients at the local hospital. It will involve a LEGO build event with all sorts of activities for children and families, including Star Wars and Disney characters. Their foundation is called Gavin's Warriors and I am honored to be asked to volunteer. He also shared this picture of Gavin with his minifigure shelf. Helping Gavin was one of the highlights of the year for me in 2014. Thanks again to all my fellow Brickpickers who helped make it happen.

  16. Well here's a real kick in the bricks. Earlier it was reported the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has stated that The Lego Movie is not considered one of the five best animated films for 2014. Instead the film gets nominated for an Oscar in Best Original Song with of course "Everything Is Awesome". The five animated films which did make the list are The Boxtrolls, How to Train Your Dragon 2, Big Hero 6, Song of the Sea, and The Tale of Princess Kaguya. I will admit those are all good although I haven't seen the last three yet. Actually I didn't even know Song of the Sea and Princess Kaguya were out yet. Still by comparison, I don't quite see how The Lego Movie wasn't up to snuff with the likes of Big Hero 6 for example. Ah well, not like I need some institution to tell me how awesome The Lego Movie is. And for those who didn't 'get' The Lego Movie, well, sucks to be you.

  19. Its still available at Retail cost (& below) in every barnes and noble within 100 miles of me. Sold out is not retired, hold this type of post for a speculation thread, not the official retirement thread. I agree its going soon, but not retired till its retired.

  23. Pass. Put that money towards something else. I have four of these bought at $13.46 each when Amazon ran a crazy sale over a year ago. I've had them listed on eBay at $25 for a looonnggg time and haven't sold one yet. The only way I'll be able to move them is if I bundle them with other city sets.

  25. Ed, from my experience selling on eBay, the typical buyers are too lazy to spend 3 seconds to browse pictures and read the descriptions. BrickClassified looks good and all but if you expect typical buyers to work then about 50% of them will leave without buying anything. First impression is everything, IMHO

  32. For what it's worth, I actually did the series with my kid and have learned quite a bit. It's shifted the way I look at and approach building lego. I'm quite confident in my ability to build nice MOCs on the fly. I have a few ideas that I'm sorting through, to possibly refine and submit one of, to Lego Ideas. And maybe my idea ends up being great or maybe it ends up being crap, the point is that it's not something I would have attempted to accomplish before doing the MBAs. To me anyhow, I, by far, learned more from these sets than any large build. To each their own.

  41. The new generation will like OT just as much as the new trilogy. Part of the story, they will watch them. Parents are more likely to buy stuff/pay more if they recognise it. Emotional attachment is important. Regarding UCS sets we won't see any from the new movies in the first few years. LEGO will evaluate their success first. Until then old vehicles are much less risk and still sell just as well or even more. The new movies will get a balanced share from the play sets aimed at children, but because of aforementioned reasons OT sets won't disappear. At least we will be able to always count on the iconic stuff (MF, X-Wing, AT-AT, ISD, etc.) if not on the more obscure ones (B-Wing). What you must not forget is that LEGO will always exploit lingering demand. They are monitoring websites, blogs and forums. They are responding to that demand. If anybody thinks that the recent UCS-s in flashy boxes are the Sandcrawler and Slave I by coincidence is a fool. Rumors about the next big UCS being an AT-AT. They know that they can't release them as IDEAS, but that project signals demand and they just release them as regular sets. This shows that they are responding. So even if there will be some small draught of OT sets in the future people will surely complain about it and LEGO will just release some MF or whatever to cash in. If I want to play the role of the Prophet of Doom then my forecast is that the EP I-III stuff will suffer only significantly, but not to complete disappearance either. It is considered inferior, little to no emotional attachment and just simply uncool. Key parts will return from time to time though, like Darth Maul for instance.

  42. My previous complaint about Fed-Ex not delivering my package is no longer valid - luckily today Fed-Ex arrived with my lost Research Institute. It sounds like the good will of a stranger out in the world who had my package left with them by mistake in a city 3 hours away from me and they must have returned it to Fed-Ex and today here it is. Made my day.

  43. They don't want to go for the investor's jugular because LEGO enjoys having the LEGO secondary market strong and the values high. One affects the other, regardless of the bans. As I stated to another member recently, if LEGO destroys the secondary market, the perceived value of new sets will suffer greatly. The secondary market LEGO prices are the main reason LEGO can charge(and get it) $400.00 for a box of ABS plastic and Mega Bloks and Kreo-O cannot. The rise of LEGO to #1 stature in the world of toy making and profits walked hand in hand with eBay and the explosion of secondary market sales. As eBay became more popular, LEGO followed suit. Don't let anyone tell you different. Sure, there was a change to a more adult oriented style of set(UCS...Modular...Advanced Models), but did anyone ever really think why LEGO went that route? LEGO likes to ban certain VIP members because they want to make a point of not being excessive and to stop competing with them with currently available sets. As for a new Falcon, I guess the rumor is of a large Falcon playset that will replace the 10188. Even if it's a new 10179, could you blame LEGO for redoing the set? People have had plenty of time to make a profit from that set. Time for another generation of resellers to take advantage of a new version.

  45. I regret that I did not take pictures of my Robie House. It arrived in a box 3x larger than the set without filling. It was so thrashed that I just stood there staring at it for minutes, with questions circulating in my mind: Just why? Is there an explanation? Is life worth living? Apparently Architecture sets use premium boxes for a reason, they are part of their appeal. When I took it back to their nearest store the clerk was horrified, he never saw anything like it. He just handed me the cash without a word, his expression told me everything: who the f*** could have been this stupid, seriously?

The outpouring of support for Gavin has been inspirational for many of us. I think it would be awesome if we could extend that to other youngsters battling an illness.
