What you mean is brute logic. You simply assume several things you can't (and don't) really know. For example you state... a ) ...that people loving winter themed sets are mostly the same like those people loving carnival themed sets (how do you know?) b ) ...that people see the carnival theme as a substitution for the winter theme (how do you come to this conclusion - personally I do not really see a fundamental link between the topic "winter" and the topic "carnival", even less because the winter theme has been more about houses whereas the carnival might be more about rides - meaning: those two are divided by more than they share c ) ...that those people have limited funds they are willing to only spend on ONE of the themes (how do you know?). If all people were constantly retaining their budget for toys in general and specifically Lego, then Lego's sales would not be growing constantly. It could well be people continue collecting the winter theme and also start collecting carnival (IF there was a link between the two groups, which we don't know) I am not saying that you ARE wrong. I only want to comment that you just cannot know. And in this case there is not much logic involved but plain guessing instead - which is not very productive for a forum focusing on lego investing. Why don't you just more generally say that Lego releasing more and more sets from year to year that are out there at the same time leads to lower average prices in the secondary market because people have more choices? This sounds much more logic (but might also be wrong). By the way: The original statement was "If the Carnival Theme replaces the Winter Village theme, do you think winter sets will drop in value ? (people focusing on the new carnival theme)", which is an assumption of people turning away from a theme because of a (quite different) new one. How about new people starting to collect? Catchword: "Extension of target groups".

    I agree. The fact that the whole thing is compacted into trucks is mind blowing. This set is basically a lego version of transformers.

This thread is all about the 'potential' and it may very well be a turkey, but your point is purely based on such a 2012 set not making decent returns in early 2014. If that's the expectation going in, then you got yourself to blame for losing money.

I personally wouldn't, costs to make it 100% original could add up and then it would just be a hassle for saving a little money. But if you could get it for $60 then I'd take it

Another option would be to strictly order parts for the exterior, if you are planning to add it to a Modular set up or display. Doing so would take out another chunk of the cost (not sure exactly how much), in exchange for play ability. Would take a bit of work to determine exactly what you could leave out, but the results are worth considering. Same goes for any modular really.

Uhm... if it really WAS like that - people losing interest in specific sets because those sets or the whole theme are discontinued - wouldn't this be the complete opposite of the idea of Lego investments?! I mean the concept of Lego investing is fundamentally based on the fact that people become MORE INTERESTED in sets and themes that cannot be bought anymore. So how do you come to the conclusion that - in this case - people would suddenly LOSE INTEREST in the Winter Village theme BECAUSE it is discontinued? If I am just getting your argument wrong, please clear it up.

I grabbed some too when I found them on clearance at Walmart. I think they were 50% off or something like that. I will wait for at least a year before I consider selling them.

How is this plane a bad investment? It's been about a month or two since I've seen the last one on any shelves so to me it seems far too early to determine whether it's a winner or not. Sure the fire theme gets repeated, but this is the only fire plane that has ever been available. I'm looking to sell mine late this year before any new fire sets come out just in case their is another plane, but I don't anticipate that there will be. I'm glad City gets no love here because it keeps the competition down for me. You can make money with them, but like any sets, you just have to be smart when you buy.

Tabby gives City a bad name, when in reality I think he's just invested in the wrong sets. For every set he gives that is a waste of time, I could show you another set that has done very well. I avoid Fire and Police for the exact reasons he states, but I do invest in other City sets. By all means, though, leave them all on the shelves for the rest of us.

This is simply amazing. Ingenious how it all folds together and fits on the trucks. If this becomes a short series of 3-4 sets to make a fairground carnival, I'm in. Like has been said, bumper cars, a small roller coaster, heck, even some farm animal stuff for a local fair would be awesome.

I guess MSRP $150-ish? Cool design, high playability but "displayability" is a bit low (or average) in my opinion, so I don't think many AFOLs will spend, say, $300 - 400 after EOL just to have it.

Put some snow on there and it will fit right in with the Winter Village. Haha. Well we obviously were not going to get something like a roller coaster or a very large thrill ride to start with but the mixer was a good choice I think. It could have been worse like a Helter Skelter which is basically just a glorified slide. Overall, the whole set was clearly well planned with the way how everything packs in the way it does. Anyway it is nice to see a set with so many kids running around. Oh and a guy about to hurl. Now I wonder how many posts it will take before the haters come marching in....

Uline is awesome if you live close to one and can pick orders up at will call. Also, you really need to be doing enough volume for it to be worthwhile. We use Uline plus whatever boxes we come into for free from various means. One thing I know of some people doing that aren't super high volume is buying the quantity of boxes that Uline requires, and then selling smaller lots of those boxes on eBay at a profit. It will take a while to recoup the $, but it's an option. What I'd recommend with Uline is take a look at the things you have, and try to identify as few box sizes as possible that will let you economically ship your items and then buy those. For example, we only keep 5 types of boxes in any significant amount for shipping. If something random comes up we probably have a big one from an order or can easily get one. The majority of the items that my wife sells fit in a 4x4x4 cube, so that's the one we have the most of at any given time. If you are doing enough volume that buying in bulk from Uline is worthwhile, then you also need a label printer. The one we use is a Dymo 450 Turbo, but we have a couple of earlier Dymos as well. No ink/toner and no cutting labels. Assuming you're using PayPal, the label type is 99019. At the moment we buy those in enough quantity that our price per label is below .03, which is actually way less than you can do it for on many other printers.
