Lord of the Rings / The Hobbit

Discussion for collecting and investing with LOTR & The Hobbit themed sets.

  1. Ive bought 2 of every set so far in the LOTR/The Hobbit Themes, 1 for myself 1 to sell later. Would it be better to sell them individually or group them all together and sell them as a collection. I feel like having literally every set, including polybags, keychains, etc... could add quite a premium, but just now at retail prices the who lot is well over $1k, add in a few more sets and 2-3x in value after retirement the collection could be worth 5k+, quite a bit for the average AFOL thoughts? thanks, ~S

  2. Considering the amount of rumors I hear about Lego, I am surprised there haven't been any speculations or inside scoops yet about the end of year offerings for hobbit when desolation comes out. Have any of you caught wind of anything yet?

  3. All these sets look great, especially the Tower of Orthanc, but not so much the Black Gate, and all the other ones are great! But will any of the new LOTR sets be exclusive?

I have been so meaning to post this for like a week now! Iain Heath (Ochre Jelly on flickr) has created this fantastic scene with Bilbo holding 'the one ring' beside a scared Gollum/Smeagol. Finders Keepers! - Ochre Jelly on flickr The character builds are simply beautiful, and the usage of parts is brilliant! I think the camera angle used in the image attached and the link is perfect.

I know that in Attack of the Wargs instead of putting Azog in the set Lego put Yazneg in the set, but my question is were they saving Azog to put in the next wave of the Hobbit sets?

  7. With the first wave of the LOTR sets to go in June time, which ones are the best to buy before that time. I currently have two of 9473 & one 9474. Thoughts anyone. Should I concentrate on the larger sets or will the small ones do well to?

I know these sets will be sticking around for a while longer and I'll have plenty of time to get all the ones I want but I'm just wondering when they will go EOL?

  9. Does anyone else think these exclusive Toys R Us polybags, especially the Elf Guard, look like good investments? The Elf Guard is worth $10 in the secondary market!

Is it just me or do some of the 2013 sets look a bit half hearted. 79005 looks ok for a small set. But 79006 & 79007 look a bit small. The black gate has shrunk and from what I remember there were more than 4 people at the council of Elrond. The pirate ship looks cool though and not as much as I expected. I wonder which minifig is Peter Jackson

  11. So, I'm only missing Gandalf Arrives, Orc Forge and Uruk Hai Army to complete my LOTR first wave collection. I can get all of these at retail at this point. I am not really sure if I should wait for a sale on these since they are not the most important sets (Orc Forge I'll probably buy at retail since I don't see it being discounted) or just buy them now before they are EOL. What do you suggest? Thanks (Couldn't find an existing thread where this would be appropriate, but feel free to move it if there is one)

Anyone a fan of these? The more i look at them, the more i think i'm going to be getting some. Some for investing, some for myself. These should pick in value later on, one would think right?

Just noticed that 9472 Attack on Weathertop is sold out online. Also there are at least 3 new LOR sets coming out in 2013, maybe time to start snagging last years sets?

Even though I like star wars and some other themes I think lotr dominates when it comes to mini figs and huge sets such as helms deep and goblin king battle . So just wanna know what everyone else thinks.

  17. So as the thread suggest, I would love your vote on which set do you think it will appreciate the most and wil lget best CAGR or annual growth. I personally think 1. Helms Deep (because it is castle type) 2. Orc Forge (Exclusive and Orthanc is being released) 3. Mines of Moria (granted we do not get armored trolls and another Boromir and possibly Balrog*** (hopefully))

Everybody, including me, is pumped about the UCS Orthanc, but what else do you guys think should be given the UCS treatment? At the top of my list would be a Bag-end, Barad-dur, mummakil, and maybe a brick-build Narsil or Anduril. Busts of characters such as Sauron, Frodo, Aragorn and the Witch King of Angmar would be awesome as well. What do you guys think?

  22. Started by Alcarin,

First I wanted to put in in line 1 predictions but i believe that line 2 discussion deserves a special topic for discussion Below I will list the sets and prices for LOTR line 2 coming out in June(?) 79005 The Wizard Battle SRP: $12.99 Pieces: 113 Everyone will buy this set, or multiple so I do not see much use for it in the aftermarket, it looks more iconic and greater use for playset than Gandalf Arrives, but worse for display than a beautifully designed wagon from Gandalf. 79006 The Council of Elrond SRP: $29.99 Pieces: 243 I find this set a potential sleeper, allthough many will buy it, for the special colors of parts, but I think …

As the title goes, do you think Helm's deep might do better because it is way more iconic than Pirate Ship? I kinda feel like that, allthough ships just have a winner all over, but still while a pirate ship you get 0 pirates (well 1 sigh) so it kinda feels lacking towards any other previous big set pirate ship released, while Helm's deep is one if not most iconic momments of 2nd movie. thoughts and insights appreciated :)
