Akin to the "Musical Picks" topic, I want to hear what your all time favourite movies/television shows are. It can be anything from action to drama to sports to romance (who watches that anyway though?). Don't be shy and don't be mean to other members, even if they really did enjoy Superbaby-Geniuses or whatever that piece of crap was called

 

I'll start off with a couple of my favs; I find most of the ones I put down are great films all together, but have shining endings.

 

Blood Diamond (Thriller/Drama): Leo DiCaprio picks up a sick south african accent in this eye-opening thriller/drama. Great music but if you're a Leo fan, you can probably already guess how it ends lol.

Friday Night Lights (Sports): I'm not a football guy, but the cinematography and story made this a refreshing change to the typical, predictable, sports movie. Plus, the instrumental music by Explosions in the Sky fits perfect (note: the trailer is crap, watch the film).

The Lord of The Rings Trilogy (Fantasy): If you are on a Lego forum where Lego LOTR products are frequently discussed, you probably already know how awesome the films are. If you don't, I'll leave it up to the mods to immediately revoke your membership to BrickPicker (jk).

 

And last I'll just end with my favourite TV show, which is probably going into its final season this year, The Mentalist (crime procedeural): this murder-a-episode series focuses on a former psychic who is now tracking the serial killer who murdered his family. The show can be light and funny, but when the serial killer ("red john") gets involved, it can get pretty unnerving. The series has spent 5 years tracking down murderers so feels a bit tired, but it is still my favourite. And, I'll post a trailer for the 3rd season finally:

Finally! Gotham by Gaslight animated movie.  And the artwork is in the same vein as Batman TAS

I browsed the "Recently Added to Prime" section of Prime Video, WHAT A JOKE!!!

There were a few box office bombs, some old movies (a few classics), then a bunch of B-movies from the past 10 years nobody even heard of

 

Not sure what to think.  The concept of Punisher is a cliche by Hollywood standard

I'm not a fan of Seth MacFarlane.  Not that I dislike him, just not a fan.  But I'm really enjoying this series so far.

Yup. Been watching. It sort of has a STTNG feel to it IMO. But it's kind of hokey. If it's too serious it feels corny yet it shouldn't be a laughfest either. We'll see where this goes I suppose.

Based on the first 2 episodes, if you are hardcore TOS / TNG fan, you are probably better off watching The Orville

TBH, the first 2 episodes look more like a prologue / prequel of the actual show, we did not even see the Discovery except for on the opening title.  So it is hard to judge the feel of the show based on these 2 episodes. 

The Good: SFX is superb.  To me, the graphics are movie grade quality.  The spaceships look "real" with a lot of details.  The space battle scenes looked dynamic.  Let's face it, the Orville spaceship looks like lower budget CGI, even in comparison to older shows like DS9 or Voy.  Discovery SFX is more inline with the new ST movies

I like the chemistry between Michelle Yeoh character / captain, 1st officer and the orange alien science officer.  The other bridge officers were not flashed out (for obvious reasons)
I would actually watch a show about USS Shenzhou leading up to this pilot episodes.  There was a scene about the first encounter between captain and 1st officer.  I would like to see how 1st officer got from that point to the pilot.

The Worst: the writing sucks or maybe it was dumbed down for the general public.  There were a few instances when I thought "why the heck did they do that??" or "Doh, isn't that obvious??".  
The actors were doing their best with whatever they were given.

The Neutral: I came it with very little expectation so I was not disappointed by the show.  I can see the showrunners' intend even though there were flaws in the executions.  I think the show is going to a darker ST universe, which has been done much better (IMHO) in DS9.

I think the 2 episodes could be a great opening for generic scifi show, I do not think it was ST.  I have similar opinion about the new ST movies.  There is a chance the tone of the series will change in the next episodes, but woldn't that be dishonest to newer viewers who got hooked by the pilot? 

 

So what's the 3 letters acronym for ST: Discovery???  STD ? DIS ? DVR?

Here is a review from RedLetterMedia that is inline pretty much with what I think about the pilot (and better worded ).  I have seen harsher reviews and kinder reviews, but this one I think is pretty much on the money.

@Darth_Raichu  I thought you encapsulated what I felt pretty well.  I watched that video though, and I feel pretty much the same way.

I don't want it to fail, so hopefully the first "real" episode of the show will be a good hook.
