COVID-19 / Coronavirus Discussion

Because we are a global community, I would like to create a thread for talking about the COVID-19 how this has impacted you.

I work for a smaller, Chinese-owned tool company. Our workforce after CNY and the extended break was only running at about 40%, of which this is actually on the higher side compared to what I've heard about other, much larger tech companies. While we haven't felt much of the impact here in the US, I am sure we will soon. The way that some companies flow in goods from overseas will really have an impact on store shelves; Stores like Walmart that have large DC's and reroute the flow and quantity of goods so that the shelves don't look as bare. Target specifically doesn't keep extra inventory outside of what it knows will sell in a specific amount of shelf-time and therefore bases reordering on that known formula. Given that orders from China are typically 30 days on a Boat just to arrive on the West Coast, and then separate amount of Customs and transport times to other places in the US, the effects will start to be apparent really soon.

Not trying to start a fear-mongering thread, but a place where we can talk about this like educated adults.

- Nathan

I saw that. Really satisfied me to be honest. Revenge because of ridicule at its finest! If you joke around with deadly diseases, it'll wait for you right around the corner.

France closed all schools. We're waiting right now for the official statement of Merkel... she's an hour late... they're probably thinking about a possible excuse for not closing the schools to push through their lobbyist interests.

All Ohio K-12 schools have 3 weeks Spring Break starting this Monday 3/16.

Yep. That's my son. The doctor speaking to the state was the wife of one of my kid's teachers. I live in Columbus.

What a funny thread.

If the Super Bowl was in 2 weeks, likely the same outcome as the NCAA.

NCAA men's and women's basketball tournaments will not include fans due to coronavirus concerns

Nor will it include Duke or Kansas I guess.

The NCAA tournament will not go on.  MLB has cancelled the rest of spring training and delayed start of season.  Broadway is closed.  NFL is recalling scouts and will address draft.  My son was sent home with two weeks of work today but it is still open temporarily.

Yeah, I agree it is looking that way.

Our Easter Break starts on Good Friday in our district.  We're still 4 weeks away from that.

If I had to guess, if our district does something sooner rather than later, and closes down, they will move the Easter break up, add a second week, and can the week off mid-April.  Hopefully.

I sense pretty good online LEGO sales over the next month with all these kids home.

Yeah, I'm thinking they restart (or reassess)schools after Easter.

mine have been substantially up the past month already. Silver lining as I mentioned earlier in this thread

How do we objectively track this as a group so we know when to send sets into FBA?

Big risk right now using Amazon warehouses. If one employee goes down at that warehouse...whole warehouse operation goes down for a bit as they quarantine and sanitize.

Not for us. Half Europe is under quarantine except for us Germans. Incompetence! I think the pressure is too big though at almost 3000 infected, schools will close here too, only a matter of time.

Fire up the LEGO seals thread. I'm sure they'll want to know if their LEGO was packaged before the outbreak.

For all those saying that this is all overblown and just another flu or cold...

Flu deaths this season world wide = 646k

Flu deaths in US this season = 12k-30k

Coronavirus deaths worldwide if 3.4% mortality rate (WHO estimate) = ~262 million

Coronavirus deaths in US if 3.4% mortality rate = 11.2 million

Coronavirus deaths if 2% mortality rate worldwide = 154 million

Coronavirus deaths in US if 2% mortality rate = 6.6 million

Coronavirus deaths if 1% mortality rate (what I tend to believe is a closer estimate) worldwide = 7.7 million

Coronavirus deaths in US if 1% mortality rate = 3.3 million

That is of course assuming that everyone in the world gets infected at some point. But even if only 50% become infected and it has a 1% mortality rate that is still 1.65 million dead in just the US. Which is 55 times more than the flu this year. There are also vaccines against the flu that help prevent spread and severity... no vaccine to stop coronavirus from spreading.

From an epidemiology perspective; how should the total deaths be viewed if the death counts from other respiratory diseases goes down?

If out of the 2 million deaths, 75% were 85+ years old w/ previous underlying diseases (numbers I'm making up) it does change the optics a bit.  For many it does seem like CV was the last straw.
