COVID-19 / Coronavirus Discussion

Because we are a global community, I would like to create a thread for talking about the COVID-19 how this has impacted you.

I work for a smaller, Chinese-owned tool company. Our workforce after CNY and the extended break was only running at about 40%, of which this is actually on the higher side compared to what I've heard about other, much larger tech companies. While we haven't felt much of the impact here in the US, I am sure we will soon. The way that some companies flow in goods from overseas will really have an impact on store shelves; Stores like Walmart that have large DC's and reroute the flow and quantity of goods so that the shelves don't look as bare. Target specifically doesn't keep extra inventory outside of what it knows will sell in a specific amount of shelf-time and therefore bases reordering on that known formula. Given that orders from China are typically 30 days on a Boat just to arrive on the West Coast, and then separate amount of Customs and transport times to other places in the US, the effects will start to be apparent really soon.

Not trying to start a fear-mongering thread, but a place where we can talk about this like educated adults.

- Nathan

I like the memes, but let's please try and avoid any racist ones.

On a different note....I don't know how I am going to survive working from home. Kids are driving me bonkers and I know at some point in the near future, me and the wife are going to have our own conflict.

I predict both a spike in divorce and a spike in births in the next 9 months :)

How old are your kids?

We've home schooled for 6 years, so this is just another spring for us (minus the social/sports calendar).  Many of the home-school support groups and publishers are offering free stuff galore.  Just need to tap into it. For example there are some literature reviews available from Kolbe here for grades 3-12.

Almost 5 and 3 year old girls. They don't know about YouTube yet, or at least they don't request to watch it, so thats a challenge we are dealing with, knowing that some people are live streaming classes/activities.

Otherwise, we have been printing tracing sheets for letters and numbers for them to use, doing various crafts and activities around the home. But those ideas are running in short supply.

They did both create a DOTS bracelet this morning, which was nice.

Our three year old is playing with plasticine every morning for 2 hours. Also he helps to cook, so this keeps him busy also. And we ordered a bunch of games from amazon like croco doc and other stuff. Unfortunately he isnt allowed to watch paw patrol for the next two weeks cause he behaved badly. It is week one...so this is going to be fun😁😁😁😁

I try to stay off the site at night, but I get updates about activity.  I saw a lot of activity and was wondering if it was all negative posts.  I was very happy to see these memes.

I agree that's a tough age.  There's only so much coloring one can do, and they are a bit too young to be completely self directed.

When my kids were that age, sometimes I'd pull out a big shipping box and they'd turn it into a robot or kitchen or police-car or something, by cutting and coloring and pasting stuff to the sides.

"Magic shows" were big back then too---sometimes with hilarious results.

Good on you for having boundaries and respecting them.

I got rid of all of my social media accounts at the end of 2019. Deleted everything - Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Reddit, etc. it is a very refreshing way to live life, setting and keeping boundaries for online, whatever they may be.

wow this is awesome; thanks for the link

Altho we do not home school our 2nd grader; I learned about a year ago that the grammar school system caters to the lowest denominator student; I have been lucky enough to volunteered in the class room and saw it in action...assignment is math worksheet stations...if child finished early they get to choose a book and read on the rug.  I saw about 5 kids finish in the first 5 minutes and then they sat down to read for the next hour by themselves while the rest of the class "caught up"...and this is the reality at one of the top school districts in CA.

I have been teaching my 8 year old geometry and some trig because he wanted to know how distances to stars are measured...so we are getting there step by step..I have him filling out multiplication tables (something not taught till 3rd grade btw--sheesh) tables during this "crisis"...I am in a science field so this stuff comes naturally to me. every child is different and their learning abilities vary...but I am a firm believer now that the limits are really w/ the education system and NOT the child.

LOL...I just run out of gas at night after trying to tackle all these new issues on a daily basis.  It was hard enough to run my business and family life before, but now I miss those days.  I find myself watching TV and reading Twitter less and less.  There are just too many people with agendas spewing fear and looking to profit off of this.  Yeah, this is uncharted territory and will get worse, but the world will overcome and the best and the brightest among us are attacking this with a passion never seen before.

I have a bunch of used/complete Lego sets from my personal collection and I've been mailing them out to my friends across the country to let them and their kids build/play. Just on loan as most of my sets are big $200+ sets.

So far I've sent out Bugatti, Big Roller Coaster, Fairground Mixer and Sea Cow.

unfortunately they are not the leaders put in charge or even the ones advising the leaders

nope...much like in the Armageddon movie; it's the C+ students that end up in government jobs

Those who are using this to profit are neither our best or brightest.

This, and bullying, is why we started homeschooling.  Our bright, energetic kindergartner had become bored and sullen by the 4th grade.  The teachers said "by high-school, he'll be challenged". (spit)   It took about 18 months to unwind him out of that mess, but he's on a good track now.

Any mortgage brokers or real estate agents out there?  I am curious to see how this is affecting home sales and the ability to acquire mortgages.  Thanks...
