COVID-19 / Coronavirus Discussion

Because we are a global community, I would like to create a thread for talking about the COVID-19 how this has impacted you.

I work for a smaller, Chinese-owned tool company. Our workforce after CNY and the extended break was only running at about 40%, of which this is actually on the higher side compared to what I've heard about other, much larger tech companies. While we haven't felt much of the impact here in the US, I am sure we will soon. The way that some companies flow in goods from overseas will really have an impact on store shelves; Stores like Walmart that have large DC's and reroute the flow and quantity of goods so that the shelves don't look as bare. Target specifically doesn't keep extra inventory outside of what it knows will sell in a specific amount of shelf-time and therefore bases reordering on that known formula. Given that orders from China are typically 30 days on a Boat just to arrive on the West Coast, and then separate amount of Customs and transport times to other places in the US, the effects will start to be apparent really soon.

Not trying to start a fear-mongering thread, but a place where we can talk about this like educated adults.

Great post.  Thanks for sharing this.  One minor edit above.

As a counter point: I literally just had 2 Morman's stop by my house, on my front step, knock on my door and then proceed to want to talk about God during this trying time.

I am never one to knock a religion, but seriously?!?!?!?!?!? Talk about naive.

amazing. china had 1 positive case today. 1

gone from 1000s + per day to 1.

This is assuming the given numbers were ever actually accurate out of china.

We don’t know what is really going on in China.

my wife is 7mo pregnant. We Self quarantined ourselves for 21 days minimum this past Sat. Not going to wait around and let people with alterior motives tell you what to do. You alone need to be your own biggest health advocate.

Right there with you man.

Wife is in first trimester with our third. Scary stuff, compounded by how little we know about this and pregnancy. Is she going to have a natural birth or C-section? Mine will need a C-section which is a bit concerning.

I am assuming no data out of China is accurate and the whole thing stinks.  Trust no one.

It's not all that tough to imagine China going to basically 0 cases. They have the ability to take away rights and lock people in their homes. Their government would have no issues shooting you if you broke quarantine. This may have led to thousands of unreported deaths, as people may have simply died at home.

Spoiler: it's also tough to imagine China lying about everything.

add LEGO to list of stores closing.   Til 3/28 for now.   Pretty sure all retail other than grocery / big box will be closed soon.

China is the last government in this world I'd trust. It's also the last government in this world that has official concentration camps. Nobody mentions that! Where are the values we all speak so highly of? The minimum we can do is to inform people about this present genocide in the "modern" 21st Century. Google search the Uyghurs. They are a minority there. Millions of people trapped, enslaved, slaughtered & raped. I don't want to imagine how Covid-19 hit them there. No medical treatment what so ever, even before the virus. Poor guys. The chinese press won't write a word about their horrible situation.

How can anyone in the right mind trust these numbers from a communist killer-regime?

Well Apple has closed all its retail stores except for Greater China. Which, to me, implies that China is doing better. So hopefully they are telling the truth. But why throw out reporters unless you're trying to hide something. Who to believe?

They are mostly in malls in the US, so this makes sense.

Between this and Amazon now limiting new FBA shipments to essentials, this should be good times for FBM sellers until the post office goes down

We just had our second child...last week (the other is 23 months). Our hospital stay was intense, especially when a nurse made the mistake of revealing that they had their first confirmed case our first day there. We have had to make a lot of choices that potential visitors have sometimes questioned as extreme ("Okay, but can't I just..."), but as you said, it's about protecting ourselves and the babies.

You did the right thing.

ok..I understand you don't know what you're talking about. Good luck.

It does sound like Italy may be stabilizing. That's a good sign.

We really have no tools in our shed, with this.

not 100% true

Doctors have a tool that's been around for about 100 years and plenty of data in terms of efficacy and epidemiology.

Blood/serum transfusion from recovered patients have known to significantly reduce the impact of exposure and mitigate symptom and reduce recovery time.

Not a vaccine or a cure; but will definitely help recovery and help/prevent extreme cases.

And there it is. Kansas closes all of its public schools for the remainder of the year. This is brutal and going to last until at least June.

Until everyone goes back to socializing and it begins to spread again.

Reaminder of the year?  I presume school year (i.e. May/June).  Right now in Iowa most places are at 4 weeks of school shutdown, anticipating return late April.  Obviously, that could change, as it did for Kansas.  I'm with you my fellow midwestern friend.

Well, at least Amazon and every supermarket is hiring.

Yes, remainder of school year. I’m certain it is only a matter of time before other states follow.

Stay safe man and best of luck. We were planning for natural birth but we will see how this all pans out. Almost all Dr's appointments are being canceled/teleconference. Really hoping we can come together as a nation and get the social distancing in full effect so a few months down the road we see our numbers level off and the panic has reduced.

If you look at the 1918 graph someone shared earlier.  We the US are essentially Balitimore/Philly back then, since we didnt react as early as we could have.  This allows the virus to SPREAD.

Now we have to live through the reality of the apex of infections. And as each state has their own plans, we will see some states not take is as seriously and be worse off. This is the unfortunate reality we are in now.

Since this is not allowed in our country and still highly researched, i would say its not a viable course of treatment at present. In the future, yes, if we can get rid of all the hurdles/restrictions of handling the actual contaminated specimen.  If anything, Im hoping this makes alot of people wake up, and maybe we put into place an action plan if this was to ever happen again.  Cut off travel early, bars, churches, airports, everything. Reduce the amount of built up panic and sell offs. If we know what to expect, alot less people would be spooked and more would be prepared.
