COVID-19 / Coronavirus Discussion

Because we are a global community, I would like to create a thread for talking about the COVID-19 how this has impacted you.

I work for a smaller, Chinese-owned tool company. Our workforce after CNY and the extended break was only running at about 40%, of which this is actually on the higher side compared to what I've heard about other, much larger tech companies. While we haven't felt much of the impact here in the US, I am sure we will soon. The way that some companies flow in goods from overseas will really have an impact on store shelves; Stores like Walmart that have large DC's and reroute the flow and quantity of goods so that the shelves don't look as bare. Target specifically doesn't keep extra inventory outside of what it knows will sell in a specific amount of shelf-time and therefore bases reordering on that known formula. Given that orders from China are typically 30 days on a Boat just to arrive on the West Coast, and then separate amount of Customs and transport times to other places in the US, the effects will start to be apparent really soon.

Not trying to start a fear-mongering thread, but a place where we can talk about this like educated adults.

- Nathan

Social distancing at its best. Took this pic while stopped at a light. This is on Long Island, Ny today at noon. All of the supermarket parking lots look like this.

Honestly, they should just have people visit the stores according to their last name for a few weeks.  Monday...A-B-Y-Z and so on.

That's way too much organization for people. I went to vote early today in Ohio and they were queueing the line outside to keep people from being close to one another. I don't know what part of "please leave a 6 foot space between you and the people in front and behind you" they don't understand. But I would leave 6 feet between the person in front of me and the people behind me would literally pass me and walk up to the guy in front of me. What the hell people. You'll get there just as fast. I promise you that.  Ohio governor just requested voting (which is supposed to be tomorrow) to be delayed until June 2. He alone doesn't have the authority to make that happen but he's asking those who do have to the power to do just that.

I don't know why he had to say that (maybe to prepare all of us) but the timing was actually not that bad. If you say that at 9 am, you might hit that last 20% circuit breaker.

don't worry by tomorrow, everyone will have heard Trump say its gonna last til August and then the real panic selling is going and they'll be playing the til august news clip on cnbc every 20 minutes until the market opens tomorrow.  this opens up far too much uncertainty for investors to bear especially given the patchwork incohesive response.     having the market end with crescendo selling begets further selling as people scramble now to figure out what they have to sell tonight and tomorrow to meet their margin calls and what's going to be the catalyst for turning things around? there is none - tomorrow is probably gonna be the day we find out the whole country is going into self quarantine to help save our beloved seniors.  what do you think happens to the market the day trump says that to the news media at 3:25 pm?   also once the regular folk hear about this tonight on the evening news and start to think of the ramifications of zero gdp x 5 months and see how much they've already lost.  at this point, i think they need to bring in the helicopters with suitcases full of freshly printed clean sanitized money and start  dumping.

The catalyst will be when the number of new daily cases starts going down...no, we aren't close to that but other countries have gotten past the peak of the curve. He should have been more specific. We will not be in strict quarantine till August (in my opinion).

He basically said "after this the stock market will be like nothing we've ever seen". That could be good or bad...

I know he means good, but its hard to get any straight answer from anyone as no-one honestly has ANY hard date.

If you don’t test them... they won’t know they have it.

It is what it is when it comes to the market.  1:00 PM...3:00 PM...Midnight...The markets will adjust the next day.  The market will explode at some point in the future.  It would help if these assholes would get off the beach...

Anyone old enough to remember Odd Even days for gasoline rationing?

When looking at other countries that got past the peak look at their quarantine measures and this:

Yup.  We had water rationing by street address, too, where I grew up.  'course, it was easy to spot the water-cheaters----they were the only ones with green lawns. 😃

Social distancing and masks are nothing new for Japan and Hong Kong as they learned their lessons from bird flu and SARS.

Catastrophic numbers from Italy.

27.850 infected, 2.150 dead. Those are not good numbers.

Where are all the doctors who stated this was a 0.1% mortality rate flu-like virus? I don't hear nothing.

If this virus spreads (which it does) & it is not stopped... it will cost millions upon millions of lives. Hate to be pessimistic about this but just do a quick calculation, this is not looking good! It's not the first time millions died because of a disease.

I guess the world deserved it. At least we, the west, certainly did. We brought all this suffering to this world & now a microorganism is trapping us in our houses. That's what I call revenge.

First of all, 25 million people died in Europe during the Black Plague. So, not the first time.

Secondly - its not nearly that black and white. Mortality depends on a lot of factors - age of population, immunocompromised, etc. A country with a much higher number of young, healthy people will have a much better shot than say Italy, with over 20% over 60, and a very touchy cultural.
