exciter1 Posted July 23, 2013 Posted July 23, 2013 I know this is a little off topic from normal Brickpicker discussion. Since many of us are frequenting Target stores recently for clearance deals, what is that smell you get a strong indication of when you walk into Target? I did a quick Google on it and some say it's a scent they add to the HVAC system, others think it's a mixture of popcorn and new product smell. Do you think it's an actual scent, because they really do all smell the same, for the most part? If it is a fragrance of some sort, I'm not buying it for an air freshener, soap, or laundry detergent. surfnut Posted July 23, 2013 Posted July 23, 2013 Whatever that smell is its a hell of a lot better than that smell in front of walmart 3 Quote
nolanfan34 Posted July 23, 2013 Posted July 23, 2013 That is hilarious, I have thought about posting this before. I am sure it is intentional, as a way of making each store comfortable and familiar. Having traveled a bit for work I can say for sure it seems to be the same in every Target. Quote
justafrog Posted July 23, 2013 Posted July 23, 2013 Whatever that smell is its a hell of a lot better than that smell in front of walmart lol - no kidding! (We have one or two nicer Walmarts around us, but most of them are pretty funky looking AND smelling and there always seems to be some unfortunate screaming child getting spanked in every one of them.) 1 Quote
TheOrcKing Posted July 23, 2013 Posted July 23, 2013 I must be so accustomed to my Target because I have absolutely no idea what you are talking about. Quote
Darth_Raichu Posted July 23, 2013 Posted July 23, 2013 What smell ? I honestly never pay attention to smells at any store, unless it is a very strong one from the perfume section. Quote

You might have other things on your mind, but make a mental note to pay attention the next time you walk into a Target. I'm pretty sure the smell is generally the same at all stores across the country. Quote

I honestly never pay attention to smells at any store, unless it is a very strong one from the perfume section.Unless I am passing by an area like the perfume section you mentioned, every retailer smells pretty much the same to me. Now some places like Sam's Club smell like an open concrete tiled warehouse and Kmart smells a little dirty everywhere, but Target or Walmart smell like any other regular retail store generally. The deli smells like it should, the vendor for popcorn and hotdogs smells as such, and the fruits and vegetables smell as they would any other day. Nothing there soon as I walk in at all. Quote
Diabolos80 Posted July 23, 2013 Posted July 23, 2013 That's the smell of oppurtunity! What's that? Nothing on clearance? Still?! Well, nevermind. Quote
stephen_rockefeller Posted July 23, 2013 Posted July 23, 2013 I get that popcorn smell.....which I always thought was weird since I never see any popcorn for sale. Quote
willy431 Posted July 23, 2013 Posted July 23, 2013 Pretty sure it's the oil they cook popcorn in. It is really strong at 9 when they first pop it. The one target I went to with no snack bar didn't have "that smell" Quote
matt1147 Posted July 23, 2013 Posted July 23, 2013 Walmart may smell like sweat and dirt, but K Mart smells like depression. 1 Quote
Quacs Posted July 23, 2013 Posted July 23, 2013 Yup - popcorn. I always assumed it was from that awful food court they have in many of them. Quote
jaisonline Posted July 23, 2013 Posted July 23, 2013 I must be so accustomed to my Target because I have absolutely no idea what you are talking about. Ditto. The only dept store smells I seem to remember are from KMart and Walmart. Not saying, it wasn't always me....but still. Quote
pickleboy Posted July 23, 2013 Posted July 23, 2013 Kmart always smells like depression and failure. 1 Quote
JoshTX Posted July 23, 2013 Posted July 23, 2013 It's the smell of a bad Lynrd Skynrd song. And popcorn. Quote
TheOrcKing Posted July 23, 2013 Posted July 23, 2013 It's the smell of a bad Lynrd Skynrd song. And popcorn.Dang it, that's it. I can't resist the temptation anymore! And the tune isn't bad. You're bad! And you should feel bad! Quote
JoshTX Posted July 23, 2013 Posted July 23, 2013 And the tune isn't bad. You're bad! And you should feel bad! Sorry...can't do it! I'm a Neil Young fan, and living in the South with a biracial child I can't advocate for bands/people who still wave the Confederate flag around. Not saying everyone that listens to Skynrd is a fan of the Confederacy or a divided nation, I know some people just like their music and could care less about the politics and symbols. But I've met many who carry the confederate flag as a surviving beacon of their belief that they are still superior to others. Quote
Anakinisvader Posted July 23, 2013 Posted July 23, 2013 Ours smell like vomit and ICEE. Or if you prefer: VICEE. Maybe its just New Mexico. Quote
TheOrcKing Posted July 23, 2013 Posted July 23, 2013 I've met many who carry the confederate flag as a surviving beacon of their belief that they are still superior to others.Yeah, that mentality doesn't make sense to me either. Talk about 'old world' thinking. Quote
Darth Lego Posted July 24, 2013 Posted July 24, 2013 Yup - popcorn. I always assumed it was from that awful food court they have in many of them. It used to smell like popcorn, but now most of the stores around me changed their food court into a Starbucks. Now you get a nice coffee smell when you walk in. Quote
exciter1 Posted July 24, 2013 Author Posted July 24, 2013 I still think there is a distinct smell that isn't popcorn, but something else. All, give your Target a whiff and report back. Quote
Maverick2k1 Posted July 24, 2013 Posted July 24, 2013 So funny this topic came up. Target definitely has a distinct scent, I always thought the food court was the source since its right at the front so it's the first thing you smell. Quote
