I should have been clearer, I was talking about the unprompted surprise points that just appeared on my account from time to time. I have been noticing more unprompted surprise points so far this year, 2-3 times it has been $5 on relatively low purchase amounts. I don't see mention of them in the emails but there are so many different places to check. Finding the latest $15 off $30 promotion was a fluke. Gotcha! I had an issue with those surprise points before the weekend on Sears.com, where they were showing and then when I got my order confirmation they were gone. Ended up calling their CS who explained the difference (just like you guys just did - I guess I was just confused by the nomenclature) and who told me that you don't earn those points, but you get to just spend them during their activation period if you place an order.
