January 30, 201411 yr I have the chance to buy a sealed 10179 (it is not a first edition) for $1750 obo. What do you think I should offer for this?
January 30, 201411 yr That's a heck of a deal even before you make an offer. Are you gonna be able to see the set before you purchase it? Be careful if not. This set has been notorious for scams.
January 30, 201411 yr People sending sellers money and never getting the set. There have been some documented cases from members here who have been scammed. Can another mod dig up the thread from stackables and the issue he had. If not I can do it a little later. I'm at work at the moment.
January 30, 201411 yr Here it is......read through this thread from a while back. http://community.brickpicker.com/topic/382-well-i-am-too-gullible-got-scammed/?hl=got+scammed
January 30, 201411 yr damn beat me to it http://community.brickpicker.com/topic/382-well-i-am-too-gullible-got-scammed/
January 30, 201411 yr damn beat me to ithttp://community.brickpicker.com/topic/382-well-i-am-too-gullible-got-scammed/Thanks for the effort.....I decided work could wait lol
January 30, 201411 yr Author Thanks for the info, I will be picking this up in person and paying cash. Should I try and talk him down from the $1750 or just buy it?
January 30, 201411 yr if your going to open and make sure all the bags are sealed bring some doughnuts and talk them up bet they'll knock off at least a couple hundred when you have cash in hand
January 30, 201411 yr Well if he said OBO so I would offer a little lower. Just know you are getting a hell of a deal. Is he just strapped for cash I wonder. Anyways make sure you meet somewhere public. That's a lot of money to be carrying around. A police station is always a good place ;)
January 30, 201411 yr Without being able to see the box, it could be a re-sealed box of junk Lego. Someone could try to use a hair dryer to unseal and just sell you a $1750 box. Of course, anyone could do this with any sealed set, like stephen_rockefeller said this is a set notorious for scams. Be careful.
January 30, 201411 yr When you're moving the box around to "check the seals and box condition", try to gently shake it. You should be able to feel something like "books" thumping around vs LEGOs swooshing and plastics bags crackling. $1750 is a great deal, but when you're there with cash, offer him $1600 and see what he says.
January 30, 201411 yr Author I am going to look at the set this weekend, other than the seals is there anything else I can look at to make sure this set is the real deal? I do not want to break the seals to find out. Any suggestions, or is it just a $1750 gamble I have to take? If I cut the seals how much will this affect the value?

January 30, 201411 yr Do you have any idea of what the weight should be? Off the top of my head no, but that info should be available at brickset.com. Other members here probably know what it should be as well.
