At LEGOLAND California they have one built in the store window, with a little bit of an MOC of the ocean underneath that really makes it look good. I'm working on recreating that look for the one I wi

  • wow, I completely disagree with most of this post, that's quite impressive. "The Sea Cow was a lazy average design." => Nope. &

In EU the cheapest you can get it is around 300 euros (350 more common apart from sites like bricklink or brickowl, but there the shipping costs are killing the value). Do you think it is possible that the price is driven by initial post-retirement demand and may go down a bit? Or is the best time to buy now (yeah, I know that the best time was probably on sales a year ago).

Thanks! I'm new to this but it's more or less what I thought. Don't know about US or retail shops in Europe outside Poland, but this one is nowhere to be found in physical stores here and the cheapest price point online is about what you posted. I agree this might have some flaws (too cartoony and whacky, however I LOVE it about the movie sets), but I think this might get some nice prices further down the line. The pirate theme itself is going to get the job done. I also agree that the franchise value of movie sets (especially with sequels down the line) might be underappreciated.

My negative feelings about this set are well known but I had to get 1 just to be safe - you never know how the demand will evolve in the future and who it might appeal to.

>$350 on eBay now and rising, with not a lot of stock - this is looking mighty fine right now

I think your negative feelings about this set are going to be turning around soon!  Good thing you have one...

So this might be the one that lifts Movie from bottom spot on the CAGR hit parade!

If you think its success has to do anything with TLM and the figs, well, sorry to disappoint you. This is a huge and creative ship where the designer could run rampant. That is what makes it sell.

Wow. Most recent one sold for $425 plus shipping.

This sale is a true outlier because it is possibly sold domestically in Canada. It is expensive for a Canadian to buy one of these from the US and ship it across the border but this bodes well for the future.

Yes, I understand that the market will not be your average Lego Movie fan (if there are any). A couple of sales a month is not too encouraging, however.

What matters is that it was absolutely not hoarded. And it is an exclusive. It can dry up very fast and then people have to face high prices due to resellers having no inventory.

I undestand that too but for it to dry up, people have to start buying it, right?

About it not being hoarded, apart from the obligatory BP poll, we need to wait another 6 months or so to see how that pans out. Many people won´t be ready to sell yet as the buy in was not much less than what they are going for now after fees.

I don't put much faith in Brickfolio numbers or (poorly categorized) polls, but I would be willing to bet that this is the least hoarded exclusive in the last few years, except possibly TH.

I did not check any BP numbers, just took a look at ebay and bricklink and it seems very scarce compared to the star players. Also TH was a modular, so I believe this must have even less hoarders considering that TH also had a F5 frenzy and SC did not.

Least hoarded, most definitely and probably not one that resellers went chasing after EOL.

This set might benefit from one of the best smokescreens of all time as the Death Star and Tumbler provided EOL cover fire.  It's still too early to tell how it will do.  I've seen sets jump like this before only to settle back down and stay that way for months.  Don't open the champagne yet.

If the Sea Cow makes an appearance in the next movie...break out the Dom Pérignon.

The less this set is linked to the movie, the better!

I had put up some exclusives for sale back in Sept/Oct on CL.  One Korean buyer wanted only three sets at the time, Sea Cow, Red 5 and the Tumbler.  He bought all I had back then to ship to Korea.  I then reinvested the money and bought more Sea Cow's, Red 5's and Tumblers LOL.  I read a lot of complaints about the Sea Cow but I am believer on this set.  Time will tell.

Spoiler alert: the entire second movie takes place on the Sea Cow as they gang journeys into space to save Benny!

There is something wrong with your post, it says "Moderators" under your avatar :)

Congratulations and nice job from an official hoarder of the Sea Cow.

I disagree.

This sale is no outlier. I sold one for 450USD shipped on Monday.

I love it when there is no Page 2 listings after searching for a set on eBay ;)

That is a good point. Where are all the resellers? They just suddenly dried up? The lowest I can see now is over 360USD plus shipping. Someone is selling it for 350USD minus Queasy Kitty. So the lowest one can get it at right now is probably 399USD shipped, that's if you search hard enough.
