You'll need to make an adjustment somewhere.

If I understand this correctly then if I were to pick a set that retails for $40 but the current secondary market worth is $22 then I would only be 'investing' $22 of my virtual money? Not the best scenario for an example but I'm just trying to make sure I am following the rules.

 

Yep that's correct.  $22 for that set.

 

It's hard to replicate normal purchase prices at retail with the usual discounts.  Some of the current sets have a market value of under MSRP, which does somewhat factor in discounts that retailers have offered.

I am going to convert the US dollar into pounds, today's rate is $1000 = 603.25 GBP,  I'm then going to invest that 603.25 GBP on the U.K market price of 6866 Wolverine's chopper showdown, 66 @ 9.08 GBP = 599.28 ($993.6) . Those brickpoints are as good as mine.

ps, I sell for what they are in the u.k market and convert back to dollars at the rate they are at in 6 months.  Question, why does the value in my brickfolio say 20 quid, but when you view the item it says 9,  if need be i'll take 33 at the higher current price.

needless to say, I haven't seen one not sell for over 40 GBP.

I don't need to spend $1,000 for the highest % return. The amount spent is irrelevant, what matters is how much your sets appreciate in value. Buying 1 Unimog won't net me a higher % return over buying 5 of them.

While you are technically right, I think the spirit of this contest is using 1000 as the "cost of investment", meaning your remaining unused $600 will drag your ROI down by 60%.

It's based on your % gain against your initial $1,000 starting amount.  Do what you want, but here's an example of how you aren't good:

 

(rounded for easy math and we'll pretend the sets double)

 

buy 1 Unimog for $200, sell one Unimog for $400

buy 1 Fire Brigade for $200, sell one Fire Brigade for $400

 

$400+$400+$600 you didn't invest = $1,400  for a 40% gain.

 

 

buy 3 Unimogs for $200 each, sell 3 for $1,200 total

buy 2 Fire Brigades for $200 each, sell 3 for $800 total 

 

$1,200+$800 = $2,000 for a 100% gain.

 

But do what you want.

Yeah there is no conversions going on.  Market price is the $US market price sourced from US based sales.  Otherwise we could do all sorts of weird and wonderful things with the  Euro and Aus market prices as well.  Keep it simple.

You don't have to invest the full $1k, but any amount left over will not earn profits, and conversely won't take any losses (some sets might go down!)

 

Happy for anyone to add small sets to their entries if they have enough remaining cash to do so.
