So I am looking for a set to buy to build for fun, not as an investment, although I may sell it later as used. I would like for it to be $400 or under and NISB. It can be a current or retired set just looking for a fun build. I am not into the play factor or minifigs so the DS is out and I have all of the Arch sets already. Not interested in TB or any Modulars. My current choice is 10221 SSD just want to make sure I am not missing a neat retired or other current set. Your Suggestions:

For a fun/challenging build you can go with the Technic 42009 MK2 Crane. It's the Technic set with the most pieces ever.

Given that your budget is $400 you can almost cover any set.

Volkswagen T1 Camper Van

I like this suggestion as well. Plus, you'll have cash left over for something else. The Haunted House was also a great build.

Sydney Opera House? Crawler is a fun build.  You could also go with a Crawler, VW Camper, and Sopwith Camel.  4 builds, just over $400.

Get an R2D2 and either a camper van or haunted house. This way you will have 2 excellent builds for under your budget, and all three sets should appreciate well if you decide to sell them down the road. All three make great display/conversation pieces too.

Yes! the R2D2 would be an option on mine too.

I am thinking the Sopwith always had my eye on that one, the camper and R2 I have just the box is so pristine I never opened it.

Already have HH

So nothing that is retired as an option?

Does the retired set have to be sealed?  You will have a lot more options if not.  What themes do you generally like?

Preferably sealed but willing to look at other options. I like sets that display nice Architecture, Creator and SW

If you want GBE (good building experience), I'd agree with m4x18 on the lines that technic sets are more challenging, get a truck or whatever with motors, lots of fun to be had.  For $400 your spoilt for choice.

How about 10212 Imperial Shuttle as a recently retired option?

I would put in a +1 for R2D2 as well, great build.

another r2 vote. ssd is impressive but not that fun

Thanks for all the responses. I watched the video reviews on the Brickshow guess I will be going with R2 and the Sopwith and give the latter once built to my Dad for his 80 th B day

Would definitely say either R2-D2 and/or Sopwith camel. Been meaning to get both for myself, but I`ve seen a couple of videos online and they both look great. I`ve built GE and that is a fund build as well.
