I wonder how many are just sitting in MISBs? I have a few sets that could potentially have one but not so sure I want to rip into them to find out, any thoughts???

Unless you are an extremely lucky person, my guess is it would cost you way more in devaluing your sets by opening them than to just go buy a gold 3PO. I have a feeling, that even at the $300 price tag for one right now(I think that is what they are), you would have to go through dozens and dozens of sets to hit your jackpot, which I would think would cost much more in the end when you went to sell them. But I'm not much of a gambler anymore either.

Just thought of something......i wonder if you could run a set through an xray machine like ones at airports. I have several buddies that work for the TSA. Would it work?

I don't see why not. If they had some sort of mobile unit, that could be kind of cool. Doubt they will let you run your sets through the x-ray machine at the airport though:)

While I think this would be cool to know if there is one in a set; this worries me! If TLG ever decides to do this again would we see small metal detectors at the stores checking the sets. Or buddies of collectors scanning the newly arrived shipments at stores. It happened with baseball cards (waxpacks could be opened and resealed). You measure pack thickness for inserts. I'm niave to hope this never happens and I get an honest crack at a Lego insert.

I can just about guarantee you that somebody will find a way to get these freebies in boxes the next time Lego does something like this. Card companies like you are talking about got wise to the thickness of packs and starting putting in filler cardboard to make them all the same. I suppose Lego could do something similar, but I doubt they would want to spend the extra money on it. It's really no different than everybody that "checks" Collectable Minifigure polybags, or weighs them, is it? They are trying to gain an advantage to get figures that are deemed better and will be more valuable, or finishing a set off.

This scenario is a little different, Mr. Rockefeller here already owns his sets, we're not promoting cheating the system with our conversation, hopefully that is obvious.

I am unfamiliar with the actaul minifg.....is it heavy? I dont know what the weight would be for a normal set w/o the droid in it.

It depends on the set (it was in a few different ones). You can check bricklink for the weight of the sets (it will be in grams). Of course, you will need a postage scale (not a bathroom scale) to show the weight difference (which you will need anyway, when you start to sell).

on this limited mini figure, do both legs on it move as a normal mini figure would, or is one leg glued in place?

I'm assuming you are referring to the gold chrome C-3PO that was a limited edition as only 10,000 were made.

I don't personally own one, but based off of what I have read and heard from other people it should be fully functional like a normal minfigure. (Someone please correct me if I'm wrong.) Hopefully that helps!

I was just going to write that I saw several pictures showing its legs in moved positions.

I checked both of mine (they are still sealed). The legs are sorta hard to move at first (prob due to the gold plating).

To be honest, I am the reason he is posting.  One of the legs on the C3PO that I sent him was stuck (he says glued).  He broke the leg trying to move it.  I have another of the 1-10000 Lego C3PO figures that appears to also have the same issue (one leg is very "sticky") based on gentle examination of the figure while it is still in the bag.

 

Does anyone know of anyone in the Orange County/LA area that grades/examines Lego figures?  I am more than willing to bring the one that I still have in its bag to have it examined/vetted and verified that the one leg is frozen in place on the one I have at home.

You should get an honesty award. Good job refunding it, most eBay sellers wouldn't care about refunds. I'm assuming he bought it from eBay.

Yes, it was on E-bay.  It is my fault, I should have tried to move the pieces arms legs and such to see if they moved.  I just didn't think of it.  In fact, I was a bit leery of moving limbs in case I would scratch the chrome finish.  My bad.

To be clear, this one was a loose figure, I still didn't think to try to move the limbs.  I have another one that is still in the bag and its leg is stiff also.  I have had them since we got them at Comic Con a few years bag (at the time both were in bags), but had not noticed the stiff/frozen leg on either one.  One leg on the figure in the bag seems to move just fine.  The other one has some resistance to it to move it.
