What in the world those orbs are?

Ok so I'm seeing those smallish star wars sets in TRU like 9678 and for the world of me I cannot figure out what is the function and purpose of this differently colored orbs, spheres whatever they are.  Is this a x-mas tree ornament?  I can't figure out the purpose of it.  Can anyone enlighten me.

    LOL.  This is not like lego where everything has a function.  Couldn't bring myself to think that it is what it looked like, was hoping that it comes apart somehow and transforms and does something :).

    I wish these planets did something at the least. I have two of these kinds of sets. I bought them during the K-Mart 50% off clearance toys at the end of the summer.
