When people pay $1,200 for the Taj Mahal, are they building it, or investing?

Featured Replies

The Taj Mahal is just one of many examples. When people drop that kind of money for a LEGO set on the secondary market, what is their motivation? Are they building it? Are they hoping it is an investment that will continue to climb in value? Are they just completing a collection and will pay whatever they have to in order to get something? I realize all these scenarios are going to be accurate in several cases, but I am just curious to get some perspective on this. This is something I have always wondered. What do people have in mind when they spend all that money???

If the set is sealed most likely it is kept that way. I doubt someone would open a sealed set that cost this much and open it.

If you were filthy rich - why not? I don't see Brad Pitt or David Becham (big Lego fans) ever giving used sets to their kids on Christmas morning.
